1 TEMPORARY SEASONAL FIRE OUTREACH 2017 USDA Forest Service, Eastern Region (R-9) Superior National Forest The Superior National Forest, located in the Arrowhead Region of Northern Minnesota, will soon begin filling multiple temporary seasonal positions in fire management for the 2017 Fire and Fuels season. Openings are available at the GS-3, GS-4, and GS-5 levels. These are SEASONAL TEMPORARY wildland fire positions with a maximum six month tour schedule (NTE 1039 hrs). The anticipated start date for these positions is mid-april. Employees who are students generally work through the end of August, while others may work as late as October. The Forest will be opening job announcements in USAJOBS for each position at specific duty locations. These vacancies will start opening in early to mid-january. In past years the vacancies have been advertised under Open Continuous Recruitment (OCR) bulletins that did not have closing dates. This process has changed. The Superior National Forest will have forest specific announcement numbers for each position and specific duty location that will only be open for a short period of time. The table below displays positions that are anticipated to be filled for 2017 field season. These positions are listed by Job Series and Grade Level. Please refer to the hiring manager listed on the Outreach Response form for more specific information on the positions and locations.

Applicants should read the job announcement for specific information about the job requirements and follow the instructions on how to apply. Housing, where available, is limited and is prioritized. Some of these positions, at GS 5 level, have additional IFPM requirements. Those additional requirements will be identified in the job announcement. You may be required to attach additional documentation when applying. For more information on IFPM standards: Positions that participate in wildland firefighting activities will require TAKING and PASSING the Work Capacity Test (WCT) at the ARDUOUS level as a condition of employment. The Arduous (WCT) fitness test consists of a three (3) mile hike, within forty-five (45) minutes, while carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack. 3 About the Superior National Forest Established in 1909, the Superior National Forest is known for its boreal forest ecosystem, numerous clean lakes, and a colorful cultural history. The Superior National Forest comprises over 3,900,000 acres of woods and waters with including the one million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Management by the USDA-Forest Service, under principles of ecosystem management and multiple-use, provides for a diverse community of plants and animals as well as products for human needs. The concept of "all lands" management maintains strong partnerships and collaboration across the landscape. Popular recreational activities include fishing, hunting, camping, canoeing, swimming, hiking, snowmobiling, and skiing.
