1 Georgia Forestry Commission Annual Report for Ben Hill County (2012 Fiscal Year) Prepared By: Theo Craddock Chief Ranger Date Completed. December, 2012 Mission Statement To provide leadership, service, and education in the protection and stewardship Of Georgia's forest resources.
2 General Information In Ben Hill County there is a total of 161,200 acres of land, 64% of which is forest land totaling 109,000 acres, which are under the protection of the Georgia Forestry Commission. The Ben Hill County Forestry Unit is responsible for all forest protection activities involving the suppression of forest land wildfires, pre-suppression firebreaks, and other forest related activities. Under the supervision of Chief Ranger Theophilus Craddock, the Ben Hill County Forestry Unit's resources are as follows, 3 full time employees and one Supplamental Firefighter, who maintain and operate 3 tractor-plow units and one 4x4 quick responce unit. As fire weather dictates, the county is also patrolled twice each day in search for wildfires. These resources are available to Ben Hill County for the primary purpose of protecting the forest land of Ben Hill County. The Board of Commissioners in Ben Hill County contributed $14, to the Georgia Forestry Commission during the 2012 fiscal year toward the cost of protecting the forested land here in Ben Hill County. State funds allocated annually make up the remainder of the cost incurred by the County Forestry Unit. The Georgia Forestry Commission, through local personnel and a staff of foresters, provide many other services to the land owners and managers of Ben Hill County. These include: Forest management recommendations, prescribed burning recommendations, detailed forest management plans, site prep advice, planting advice, tree planter rental, educational programs, and many other services. These services are coordinated under a plan to promote a better understanding of forest management and the benefits to our environment. Our goal is to conserve, perpetuate, and increase the forest resources of the state and county and to enhance or improve the economic and aesthetic benefits to all citizens. In the pages following, more detailed information on the activities and accomplishments of the Ben Hill County Unit during the 2012 fiscal year have been listed.
