Challenges and opportunities in the Packaging sector Michel Roggo / WW WF-Canon 29-Feb-16 / 1
The Living Forests Report Introduction The world s population is set to increase to more than 9 billion by 2050 WWF - Johannes Zahnen Date
The Living Forests Report Wasteful or excessive consumption swells demand for commodities linked to forest loss.
Outlook for 2050 A tripling of the world s wood consumption A doubling of the world s paper production and consumption
Saving Forests at Risks an new chapter of the WWFLivingForest Forest report WWF publication «Saving forests at risk», 2015, on New WWF Living Forest Report chapter: saving forests at risks 11 fronts are where 80% of global deforestation is projected to take place over the next two decades under business-as-usual usual scenarios and without interventions to prevent losses. 5
Deforestation pressures
Deforestation fronts focus: Sumatra
Deforestation fronts focus: Sumatra
What are the solutions? Deforestation-free free supply chains. A growing number of major retailers, manufacturers and investors have pledged to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains and portfolios. Expanding and fulfilling these commitments could make a major difference in deforestation fronts affected by international commodity markets.
What are the solutions? Optimal land-use choices: Landscape approaches. Applying a landscape approach to prevent large- scale deforestation is ultimately about encouraging land-use choices that retain forests for multiple purposes and optimize the productive capacity of the surrounding landscape.
Deforestation fronts web site
What does this mean for Packaging? Half of the wood harvested globally ends up in Forest products including 40% for paper and board 50% of of paper and board is used for packaging today The footprint of the P&P industry is potentially high, with significant energy use, and potential water pollution. Increased wood harvesting to meet demand risks to potentially contribute to deforestation and degradation
EEPN: Mapping Pulp Mill Expansion Risks and Recommendations 29-Feb-16 / 13
WWF s approach WWF works along the whole Pulp & Paper Supply chain to support reduction of the ecological footprint of paper and board Forest/Plantation Management Paper Pulp & Paper Production Products Retailers End Consumers Use responsible paper wisely New Generation Plantations platform
What do we mean by reducing the ecological footprint of Packaging? Negative Impact on Environment Low Impact on Environment Unsustainable forestry Well-managed forests Recycled Fibre use High Water Pollution Waste to landfill Zero Water Pollution Zero Waste High GHG emissions; High energy use Powered by fossil fuels Resource inefficient product Low GHG emissions; Efficient energy use Powered by renewables Resource efficient product
WWF shares a vision on the future of paper with 140 NGOs 16
Paper and board Consumption More equitable consumption patterns: the affluent reduce wasteful paper use so the poor can consume more for education, hygiene and food safety. Annual Per capita consumption of paper in 2009 Source: EPN,
Opportunity 1: Technology - can we produce more with less wood? Increased efficiency in P&P mills Use of non-wood fibers Better designed products increasing recyclability Technology development to reuse fibers beyond 7 lives
Opportunity 2: Cascading use of wood fibres Re-using fibres as long as possible Extending the life-cycle of fibres through smart specifications and considerate uses.
Opportunity 3: More recycling in countries with low recovery rates Increasing recycled paper use would mean lowering wood harvesting needs Source: FAO/ Voith Even with higher global paper consumption, society would need less virgin material than today if recycling rates increased by 2020
Opportunity 4: Responsible Forestry and Manufacturing Eliminating bad practices such as illegal logging, conversion of high conservation value forests, or local peoples rights violations Ensuring highest ecological and social standards Forest certification will continue to be an important tool to improve forest management practices via a market driven mechanism I WWF i th F t St d hi In WWFs view the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) principles provide a credible benchmark to assess the sustainability of production forestry
Will Major past P&P deforester deliver on their promises? + In June 2015, APRIL made a new commitment on halting devorestation ( SFMP 2.0), which h covered all its suppliers and had an immediate effect. APRIL was nevertheless proven to continue conversion this summer + APP s commitment t to stop clearing natural forest for pulp production is holding. There is a continuing loss and illegal logging of natural forest in the concessions of SMG/APP suppliers. Emissions from drained peat continue: serious regional haze in 2015 generated by fires in SMG/APP suppliers concessions in South
Is PEFC certification premature? By this summer both APP and APRIL received IFCC/PEFC certification for half their subsidiaries (around ha each) WWF questioned the quality of the audit in view of the current and past performance of both companies. Are APP and APRIL even operating legally? The Indonesian anti-corruption body released a report that shows that 77 81% Indonesian wood harvest was unreported during FSC just re-started t discussion i with APP to define a road-map for re-association More information on
