7 Laos s Role in the International Timber Trade Laos is one of the world s biggest global exporter and consumer of timber and timber products Over the past decade, Laos wood export markets have been dominated by Vietnam and Thailand, with China representing a growing destination, albeit from a small base. Vietnam imports a mix of logs and sawn wood; Thailand mainly sawn wood: and China mainly logs.

8 Laos s Role in the International Timber Trade Meeting The Demand For Legally From Lao s Major markets Lao s main wood export buyers themselves re- export large volumes of processed timber products to countries which increasingly require legal timber verification. The United Stated, Australia and European Union continue to be main export markets for furniture and other wood products made in Vietnam, Thailand and China.

9 International Trade in Forest Products The demand for legal timber is increasing in recent years due to environmental sustainability concerns arise by importing countries. The International efforts in achieving environmental sustainability are existed and have been implemented by some countries thru Policies and Conventions such as :- CITES FLEGT EUTR & VPA LACEY AUSTRALIAN ACT
