Jennifer Canfield A Community EMPACTS Project 1
Introduction Sustainability should be our focus for the rapid growth in NWA. There is a constant concern of where to put our waste and protecting our water sources. The intent of the project is to educate our community on how proper waste disposal can lead to energy saved and money made This can start by providing NWACC with a profitable, sustainable recycling program 2
Project Overview The emphasis of this project is to educate NWACC as a whole about how important recycling is to the future of our constantly growing communities. A convenient recycling option must be provided I would like to present possible recycling options that have the potential to benefit the students and the school as a whole 3
Community Education & Awareness is the key for creating and sustaining a better environment for us to live in. My intent in the project is to keep Recycling in the fore front at NWACC and in our community. The impact of recycling will affect future generational thinking, making recycling second nature. By providing knowledge in protecting our ground water and saving space in the landfill 4
Paper Recycling: The campus pays Shred-it to empty the shredders placed throughout campus and take away all shredded documents Benton County Solid Waste District provides (20) 96 gallon blue carts for mixed paper including clean (no grease) paper bags from food places, all paper and junk mail The paper is picked up weekly by BCSWD and taken back to their facility in Centerton where it is baled and shipped to companies to make more paper or paper products. In December 2011 the school was producing 11,200 lbs. per month In December 2011 paper sold for a penny a pound by Vaughn Recycling in Fayetteville, that s $112 per month Unfortunately Vaughn no longer pays for paper. 5
Recycling at NWACC Cardboard Recycling All the cardboard is taken by the maintenance crew to a trailer that is owned and picked up weekly by the Benton County Solid Waste District. It is then baled and shipped places like Louisiana to be made into building material. In December 2011 the campus produced around 2,400 lbs. of cardboard Vaughn Recycling paid two cents a pound in Dec. 11, would be $48 a month The current rate at Vaughn has gone down to a penny a pound this December 6
Importance in recycling Paper & Cardboard Every year over 5 million tons of office paper is sent to the landfill. 40% of all waste is paper. Every ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees Energy to make new paper from old saves 40-60% of the energy. Paper can be recycled up to 7 times. Can cause less air and waste pollution to make paper from old over virgin materials. Saves landfill space, makes new products 7
Recycling at NWACC Plastic Recycling: In December of 2011, the #1 & #2 plastics were picked up by Benton County Solid Waste District, the plastic is currently picked up by the Bella Vista recycling facility. NWACC currently produces very little #1 & #2 plastics, they are mixed in with paper, cardboard and other recycled items and held in a 4x4x6 container by the physical plant. Bella Vista empties the container bi- weekly. Vaughn Recycling pays three cents a pound for these items. 8
Importance of Recycling Plastic Save landfill space, every ton of plastics recycled saves 7 yards of landfill space. Due to the petroleum content in some plastics the energy can be recovered. Every ton of plastic recycled over 3 barrels of crude oil is saved. It takes a 1/3 of the of energy to make bottles from recycled material than making them from new material. Many different things can be made from plastics, 1 & 2 plastics can make new plastics, carpet, fleece jackets, sleeping bags, etc. 9
Recycling at NWACC Metal Recycling: Metal is taken to Rogers Iron and Metal There is not a recycling bin for aluminum or tin cans on campus The metal recycled on campus comes from broken metal objects such as: tools for grounds keeping, some things from the allied health department, laboratory items, etc. Vaughn now pays.60 cents for Aluminum cans,.10 for Aluminum foil, and.05 cents for Tin cans 10
Importance of Recycling Metal It takes the same amount of energy to make 20 cans from recycled aluminum as one can from new material. This is enough saved energy to power a TV for 3 hrs. Aluminum can be recycled an infinite number of times. When littered an aluminum can will take 500 years to back down back into the earth reduces greenhouse gas emissions Conserves non renewable recourses. 11
Recycling at NWACC Hazardous Waste Light bulb and Battery Recycling: Light bulbs are saved and boxed up to be shipped away. The batteries that are saved on campus are taken to Battery Outfitters by Larry Owens, there is no fee for disposal. After Christmas take your old lights to Vaughn and get a dime per pound. In December 2011 Vaughn would pay a $1-$12 for various auto batteries from lawnmower to Simi. They currently pay 20cents a pound for these types. Last December the rate of Lithium batteries was 20 cents/lb. and 15 cents/lb. for Nickel Cadmium. Vaughn now pays a nickel a pound. 12
Importance of recycling Light bulbs and batteries Recycling batteries keeps the heavy metals in them from leaching into our groundwater and contaminating our soil. Cadmium is very dangerous to our aquatic life and us if we eat a poisoned fish. Recycling CFL bulbs helps keep mercury from being released into our environment. Most all of a bulb can be made back into a new bulb Most states have banned these items from the landfill. It is illegal for business to not provide recycling of these items. 13
Recycling at NWACC Electronic Waste Hazardous Waste The campus E-waste is sold in bulk to state approved companies that deal with the disposal properly. The bulk is auctioned off to the highest State approved company. Vaughn now pays.40 cents for a cell phone They will pay for computer parts and hard drives also. The collection of batteries could generate small funds for clubs, or service learning projects. Students could bring them from home also. 14
E-Cycling Importance Why should I go to the trouble? These heavy metals from electronic equipment can leach from landfills and contaminate air and groundwater Benton County Residential Drop-off: Benton County Convenience Center 5702 Brookside Rd, Centerton Saturdays from 8-4 Stop Global E-Waste Dumping Send a message to your Congress Representative
Recycling at NWACC Hazardous Waste Hazards from the Science Department Hazards created from various labs conducted in the Science dept. are disposed of by the gallon by private companies. Dissected specimens are incinerated licensed specialist. off campus by a 16
Importance of Proper Hazardous Waste Disposal This is the most important waste when it comes to proper disposal. Carelessness in waste of these products could result in death. They are harmful to human health as well as the environment This type of waste has many regulations and guidelines. These materials contain at least one of four qualities: ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity or toxicity. 17
Existing Recycling Locations at NWACC The following maps include the locations of certain recycling locations. The first map is from 2011, it shows different types of recycling locations, some of which are no longer current. The second map is of each building and includes dots marking the current paper bin locations 18

Recycling at NWACC Should be convenient Placing new bins and or moving some may help to provide a convent way for proper disposal of recyclable items I am creating a survey, with the help of teachers and the physical plant, for students and all NWACC employees to have the opportunity to take and voice their opinions on this issue. Must be improved A waste audit would allow us to see how much of the waste is recyclable. this can be provided by myself in conjunction with the Benton County Solid Waste District and some volunteers. Education on recycling can be provided by the district to inform students and teachers of recycling options, and what they can do to reduce waste at school and at home and where they can take certain items in Benton County. 27
Potential Revenue Option 1 The Purchase or donation of a recycling trailer for an outside location This trailer could be available to any residents and all of NWACC to recycle in. Creating partnerships with other businesses Pros: Ability to accept more items Cons: Costly purchase Where would we sell recyclables when trailer gets full. Who will take trailer to be dumped Will Vaughn take recyclables generated by a business? How would the funds be divided if other business joined? 28
Potential Revenue Option 2 Comingled Program: Revenue sharing on the value of recyclables Finding a company to come pick up what we bale here on campus PRO: Little work done by NWACC Receive money for recycled items No need to find new people every year CON: Only receive a percentage of the money for recyclables 29
Potential Revenue Option 3 Student Operated & Teacher Directed students move and empty bins and bale the material Teachers elect students and provide credit. Pros: Most profitable option, cuts out the middle man Cons: New participants must be selected each semester includes purchase of bailer anywhere from 5 to 35 thousand Someone must be able to transport it. 30
Curriculum Relate geological principles to environmental issues Identify the geological aspects of waste management and disposal Recognize the relationships between humans and the environment, particularly the effects of population growth on natural systems. 31
Technology Digital camera Computer/printer Cell phone 32
Skills developed Use of power point Audio knowledge* Team building, patience Communication, Presentational, Networking, Time management, compromise 33
Methodology Researched recycling and recycling options. Create survey to be reviewed by physical plant and concerned faculty. Find out who is involved in decision making when it comes to changing the current recycling program Set up Waste Audit, get permission for preforming this task. 34
Expected Outcome EMPACTS Web page including this project Map of NWACC displaying all current recycling bins and what they are for Inform that money can be made from recyclables. Incentives and costs involved A deeper knowledge of the processes involved Helping NWACC to benefit in a small way economically. 35
Obstacles Issuing/reissuing proposed bins responsibility for added If we start taking our paper and cardboard to sell, the bins we use for them now would be removed and we would have to find more Approval process 36
