Hello, Steamback Renewable Thermal is proud to offer the best way possible to heat with wood. For that purpose we give you the Econoburn Wood Boiler Econoburn wood boilers are made in NY, are the most durable and longest lasting wood boilers available, compete head-to-head with European imports and represent the cleanest way currently possible to burn wood as a heating fuel source (thanks to gasification technology). Steamback s wood boiler installations are based directly on a New York State approved plan and as such are eligible for the Renewable Heat NY Biomass Boiler Program (PON 3010) rebate, should you decide to pursue it. Sometimes pursuing the rebate makes sense, and yet sometimes it does not. We also offer upgraded wood boiler installations which use pressurized tanks rather than unpressurized tanks. Your site constraints, requirements and budget often determine which tank type is best for your project, either unpressurized or pressurized. Steamback offers affordable site visits to help you determine your needs. Steamback offers innovative biomass gasification installations which go a few steps beyond our competitors. For example, the majority of the piping and equipment is installed (when appropriate) in the form of a compact vertical rack system. This offers a number of advantages, but primarily it creates a unique user experience which places the main feedback from the system in front of the user as they load, clean and monitor their wood boiler. According to accepted industry best practice, we only install Econoburn boilers in combination with a thermal water storage buffer tank. Buffer tanks increase the installation cost but are necessary to guarantee good performance, efficiency, reliability and most important, world-class clean burning of wood. If you appreciate any of the advantages of heating with wood, you ll absolutely love the Econoburn wood boiler. Feel free to contact us for more information. We look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Glynn M. Bebee, Owner Steamback Renewable Thermal

Example System Costs Wood boiler installations are usually more complex than more common HVAC heating systems. A number of major factors influence the installation costs including ease of site access, indoor or outdoor location, ease of integration with existing backup heat/distribution systems and owner lifestyle desires and requirements. In most cases a typical wood boiler installation costs between $25,000* and $35,000*. Your site needs to be analyzed to generate a more accurate quote. Example Cost Ranges by Major Component Boiler (~$10,500) For most deliveries to Steamback s service area an Econoburn boiler delivered to site is approximately $10,500. Thermal Storage Tanks ($4,500 - $6,500) For most installations unpressurized tank prices vary between $4,500 and $6,500. Major System Components and Piping ($ $10,000) Varies by site. Labor ($ $7,000) For jobs that do not use the rack system we charge hourly for installation labor with a not to exceed amount (in contract). For jobs that do use the rack system we provide a bid amount (set by contract) which is lower than the not to exceed amount mentioned above. * Assumes: Boiler, tank and rack are in same indoor location. Existing Chimney. Easy access for boiler placement. Some overheat protection costs are extra and field-determined. Demolition and space reconfiguration costs are extra. Shipping is to Western NY. Average complexity of integration with existing heat distribution system.

Steamback s Packaged Equipment Option When possible, Steamback installs the majority of the piping and mechanicals required for a wood boiler system as an independent rack located in proximity to the boiler and thermal storage buffer tank. This offers: Greater efficiency in production Less time disturbing site and building owner Greater opportunity to relocate most equipment if desired in future Based on an approved NYSERDA wood heat schematic High efficiency circulators where appropriate Boiler anti-condensation protection Large heat exchanger for maximum system efficiency Custom aluminum rack with a small footprint and tall form factor limited requirement for wall space Easy hookup to existing heating system, boiler and tank Just 6 plumbing connections to the rack required in the field All electrical materials and controls Just a single 120VAC connection required in the field for power Most required valves, shut-offs, fill/drain/flush fittings, air-removal devices, pumps, temperature and pressure gauges, expansion tanks and overheat protection equipment (if desired) Concept images. Actual installations vary. Shown without insulation on piping, electrical wiring, expansion tank and monitoring sensors/wiring.

Case Study: Buffer Tank Retrofit In approximately 2008 a NY residence installed a wood boiler without a buffer tank. The wood boiler was rated at 100,000 btu per hour, 2-4 times what is required during most winter heating conditions. As a result the house went through large temperature swings, only small fires could be maintained and the boiler needed frequent attention. After a decade of poor performance, Steamback Renewable Thermal was hired to retrofit the system with an unpressurized water buffer tank. Steamback chose a 1500 gallon size tank and the NYS System 6 (single external heat exchanger) plan detailed earlier in this packet for equipment, piping and controls. System performance improved dramatically and immediately. Tank loading and simultaneous house heating often produced results where a full load of wood raised tank temperature between 20 and 40 degrees, well within the window of safety and performance required. 8 Online Monitoring Every major system installation by Steamback Renewable Thermal includes basic online monitoring capability*. We use this capability to watch your system closely and remotely during the first few months of operation. Then we tweak things if needed. We do this by monitoring temperatures at strategic piping locations. Such a setup provides extensive feedback about system health and performance. When an install allows for a pre-built equipment rack to be made off-site and delivered, the online monitoring equipment is built-in, with all sensors attached to all strategic pipe locations within the rack. When power is applied to the rack system (line cord or hardwired), the online monitor goes active and immediately starts posting temperatures to the Internet. On the next page you will see an example diagram indicating a typical temperature monitoring plan for a biomass boiler system, such as the Econoburn, with a Steamback-manufactured primary mechanical rack designed to optimize the interface between your wood boiler and your thermal buffer tank. * Note: Actual internet connectivity dependent on site location and availability of cellular, wi-fi or ethernet. Each site and install is different, therefore results, performance and options vary. Actual solar thermal system graphs (6-1-18) displayed on Android Phone

Steamback s Online Monitoring Steamback s equipment rack systems allow for affordable integration of remote monitoring of your biomass system. We build our own custom solutions to study your system performance after installation, to make sure everything works as planned. 10 How We Move Forward Phase 1 Free Phone Consultation: Steamback Renewable Thermal provides free phone and consultations for anyone interested in a new biomass boiler install in Tompkins and adjacent counties in NY. Phase 2 Paid Site Visit Consultation: Steamback Renewable Thermal provides hourly site visit consultations in Tompkins and adjacent counties for $75/hour. All site visit costs are deducted from any final contract proposals created (see phase 3, next page). During the consultation we request as much access to the building as possible, including as many rooms as possible. We would also like brief access to any attic spaces if possible. During the site visit consultation we request you be there and present for most if not all of the consultation. As time allows, we will collect as much information as possible about your project. We will talk to you, photograph, measure and record basic information about your building. This phase is meant to screen your project for any red flags that would significantly increase the cost and/or complexity of your biomass boiler installation. It will also help us discuss what type and size of buffer tank you will require and/or your site can accommodate.

Phase 3 Preliminary Design Package: If you decide to move forward with a biomass boiler install, Steamback Renewable Thermal will then charge $1,500 to complete a detailed review of the job, including: Extended site visits for data collection - Collection of Photos as appropriate to convey job details to third parties - Research as needed on existing equipment for planning - Completion of a detailed schematic showing the proposed system * - Detailed pricing package (contract proposal) * - Manual J Heat Loss report on building for proper equipment sizing * - Communication of design materials with appropriate third parties - Inclusion of documented electrical schematics* The materials gathered during this phase will be given to you and represents the bulk of the content needed to apply for the NYS Biomass Rebate. (* = Required for NY Biomass Rebate Application). Half of this payment of $1,500 (meaning $750) is deducted from any final contract proposal created.

Phase 4 Installation: Most installation timelines vary. Many installations can take 6+ weeks from the first site visit to completion of the system. The order of operations is listed below: Initial site visit (Hourly) Initial Design Phase ($1,500) Typically 1-2 Weeks for deliverables Signed contract and deposit (first payment) Payment amount equal to cost of the boiler, tank, major equipment and plumbing materials Boiler is ordered Tank is ordered Major equipment is ordered Manufacture of mechanicals assembly starts Tank is placed at site Boiler is placed at site Mechanicals assembly delivered to site 2/3 Contract labor amount due (second payment) Plumbing connections made between mechanicals and tank, mechanicals and boiler Electrical connection supplied to mechanicals rack System startup and demonstration of system 1/3 Contract labor due (third payment)

Frequently Asked Questions Is heating with wood better than heating with pellets? It depends on your situation and lifestyle preferences. People who want to have more control over their heating fuel and an extra feeling of independence often chose wood. People who want the advantages of hands-off convenience at the expense of fuel freedom and total carbon footprint often chose pellets. How often do I need to load my wood boiler to heat my house? You will need to load your wood boiler once or twice a day, depending on how cold it is outside. When it s really cold out, you might need to burn 2 loads a day. But when conditions are mild, burns might happen once every 2 days. How does heating with a wood boiler compare to heating with a pellet boiler? Wood boilers are often less complex, have lower electric power requirements, are safer due to heavier materials and more easily serviced. Pellet boilers offer more freedom for the owner and an opportunity for reduced biomass heating installs by approximately 10-20%. However pellet boilers are more complicated and do not have the service life of wood boilers, are dependent on a consistent and local fuel supply and rely more heavily on complicated controls. Why are your systems so complex and expensive? I thought wood stoves and pellet stoves were 1/5 the price? Steamback offers wood boilers, not simple woodstoves or pellet stoves. The difference is that wood boilers produce much more heat, can store that heat with the buffer tank for later use and can tie-in with your existing distribution system to heat your entire building with a single wood appliance.

Frequently Asked Questions Why do I need a thermal buffer tank? There is a lot of potential energy locked-up in wood. A single boiler load typically produces enough energy to heat a building for 2-4 times longer than the wood takes to burn. A buffer tank stores the extra energy produced so it can be used later rather than being wasted. Buffer tanks also enable a cleaner and more efficient burning of the wood. Is there a rebate available? NY offers a $5,000 rebate for each new wood boiler installation. An additional $5,000 is offered for documented recycling (removal and destruction) of old outdoor or indoor wood boiler, or $2,500 for recycling whole house wood furnace. Does Steamback participate in the NY rebate? Steamback Renewable Thermal is not currently an approved installer but would submit an application if your project could benefit from the rebate. Pursuing the rebate is not always an obvious choice as most people believe, however. A contractor is required to complete a large amount of documentation for each application and the time required to do so can be extensive. As a result, contractors need to adjust pricing accordingly to compensate for the time and energy required to complete the rebate applications. Also, a few of the equipment specification requirements by NY are also fairly restrictive and add significant cost. Considering these two point together, going after the NY rebate is often not the attractive option most people believe it to be. However, situations which almost certainly can benefit from the rebate include when an old wood boiler is removed.
