Main health-relevant climate-sensitive exposures in the WHO EURO region heat and cold; vector-borne diseases; floods; foodborne and water-borne infections; poor air quality; heavily human-mediated impacts (mental and occupational health)
High level of diversity

Number of deaths per million due to extreme weather events by European subareas ( ) Flood and wet mass movement (a) Cold event Heat wave Storm Wildfire Eastern Europe Northern Europe Southern Europe Western Europe Total (a) including landslides Note: Numbers are per people.
Flooding and health Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the European Region: between the years , floods killed more than 2000 people and affected 8.7 million in Europe. 15
Examples of vector-borne diseases in the WHO European Region Mosquito-borne Dengue fever Chikungunya Malaria West Nile fever (WNF) Zika? Sandfly-borne Leishmaniasis Tick-borne Lyme disease Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever Europeans on average fall sick from vector-borne diseases every year. Mosquito species, such as Aedes aegypti, are re-emerging, and Aedes albopictus is emerging.
Heatwave: August ,000 excess deaths in 12 European countries over three months Source: Robine JM, Cheung SL, Le Roy S, Van Oyen H, Herrmann FR (2007). Report on excess mortality in Europe during summer 2003 (EU Community Action Programme for Public Health). Brussels: Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection, European Commission 17
No good news.. The number of warm days (those exceeding the 90 th percentile threshold of a baseline period) have almost doubled since 1960 across the European land area. Europe has experienced several extreme heatwaves since the year 2000 (2003, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2014 and 2015). Under a high emissions scenario (RCP8.5), very extreme heat waves as strong as those or even stronger are projected to occur at least every three years in the second half of the 21 st century. 20 WHO, Health Impacts of Climate Change: Approximately 250,000 excess deaths/year by 2030s
The major increases in ill-health in the European Region will occur through Expected further impacts of extreme weather events on health Disruption and stress for health services Changing distributions of infectious diseases Changes in air quality, food and water quality and security Consequences for health of lost work capacity and reduced labor productivity
