1 ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT 1. INTRODUCTION AFS Haulage Ltd recognises that in pursuing its business objectives it has a responsibility to, and should take the opportunity to, protect and nurture the environment. By exercising proper control over its activities, the company will promote the use of sustainable resources and discourage wasteful or damaging practices. The company will commit adequate resource to its environmental responsibility. This Environmental Statement sets out the company s aims and objectives for safeguarding the environment. It should be read in conjunction with the Environmental Policy Statement and details the organisation arrangements for implementing and monitoring the company s Environmental Policy (hereinafter referred to as the Policy). This statement and policy will be supplied / made available to employees and subcontractors, to ensure they comply with our policies. Upon request, this statement & policy will be supplied to other members of the public. 2. AIMS & OBJECTIVES AFS Haulage Ltd is committed to the conservation and improvement of the environment and to minimising the risks of adverse environmental impact arising from its activities. The Company is also committed to compliance with environmental legislation and applicable regulations. The Company will manage its operations in ways which are environmentally sustainable and economically feasible and will provide appropriate environmental education programmes for its staff. 2 In order to achieve these aims the Company has the following key objectives: To promote sound environmental management policies and practices throughout the company As a minimum, to comply with the requirements of relevant legislation To make efficient and environmentally responsible use of energy and water To promote environmentally responsible procurement of goods and services To minimise waste production as far as practicable and to reuse or recycle waste where appropriate and to regulate the treatment and disposal of residual waste To reduce and where practicable prevent pollution To minimise the impact of transport on the environment arising from its own vehicles and from those used by subcontractors To minimise any adverse environmental impact of the decommissioning and disposal of Company assets To communicate within the Company and to the outside community the Company s environmental performance when requested to do so To raise awareness of staff of the Company s environmental impact, activities and performance and to promote individual good practice based on social and ethical principles To strive for continual improvement in environmental performance 3. RESPONSIBLE PERSONS To ensure effective implementation of the Policy, the personal responsibilities are identified as follows: Andy Seagrave Responsible (with assistance from the Company s external Environmental Advisors) for: Publication, revision and effective implementation of the Policy Recognising that overall environmental responsibility rests with the Management Ensuring that Management decisions give due regard to the practical requirements of the environmental protection and that the advice given is consistent with the Policy Ensuring overall compliance with the Policy and with the Environmental Protection Act Ensuring, directly or by monitored delegation, that all areas of responsibility are operated in accordance with the Policy Giving guidance on environmental matters and monitoring the implementation of the Policy Issue 08 January 2019 Page 2 of 6

3 Other staff members All staff are responsible for ensuring that their own actions and work are carried out in a manner which minimises damage to the environment. 4. AIMS SPECIFIC TO THE COMPANY S MAIN ACTIVITIES To prevent pollution, including the release of fuel, oils and associated materials, wherever possible To prevent pollution due to emissions from equipment and vehicles used in association with company services To protect the environmental status of land and to ensure that all areas are left in least as good a state as when the work started To ensure that subcontractors demonstrate the same level of commitment as staff to protection of the environment To ensure that all direct and indirect employees have the equipment, skills and knowledge to meet the Company s commitments 5. MONITORING & REVIEW The Management in conjunction with the external Environmental Advisor will review the validity of, and compliance with, the Policy on an annual basis (or sooner, if deemed necessary, e.g. as a result of an incident having significant adverse impact on the environment). 4 ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY 1. INTRODUCTION AFS Haulage Ltd has commissioned an environmental review which has in turn led to the production of this Environmental Policy document. The Policy document sets out the company s procedures to be followed in order to ensure compliance with all relevant statutory legislation regarding protection of the environment. 2. APPLICABLE LEGISLATION Environmental Protection Act 1990 Pollution Prevention and Control Act RELEVANT REGULATIONS The Regulations to be complied with are: Environmental Protection (Prescribed Processes and Substances) Regulations 1991 Pollution Prevention & Control (PPC) Regulations 2000 Schedule 1 of the latter contains a list of activities which require possession by the operator of a permit before such activities can be carried out. The Company activities, summarised below, do not fall into this category and therefore no permit is required. Nevertheless, the Company recognises that these activities can have environmental impact and that any adverse impacts must be minimised. 4. MAIN COMPANY ACTIVITIES The main activities carried out by The Company which are deemed to have the potential to affect the environment are as follows: Emissions to air from engines (vehicles and equipment) Impact on roads Impact on other road users Use of renewable materials Use of non-renewable materials Recycling The Policy addresses each of these activities and details the measures to be adopted to minimise their adverse environmental impacts Issue 08 January 2019 Page 4 of 6

IMPACTS AND ASSOCIATED POLICIES 5.1 Emissions to air The company will ensure that vehicle engines are maintained in accordance with manufacturer s instructions / government regulations to the highest standard. The company will employ best practice and innovation to minimise the number of journeys required to fulfil contractual obligations When replacing vehicles or purchasing new vehicles efficiency and emissions will be foremost in the selection process The company will enforce a policy of vehicle replacement when emissions and costs are considered significantly higher measured against performance of newer vehicles 5.2 Impact on Roads The company will use the lightest vehicle available for the load to be carried. The company will also ensure the numbers of vehicle used are reduced by optimum loading. The company has computer software optimised to produce these aims 5.3 Impacts on other road users The company is aware of the effect on other road users that the Road Haulage Industry has, in particular road congestion and the effect on car drivers. Drivers are instructed to drive with care and consideration. Planning takes into consideration routes, time and the minimisation of vehicles to meet the requirements of the contracts 5.4 Use of Renewable Materials The company uses only pallets made from sustainable sources including soft woods from Scandinavia. Where possible pallets are repaired and when deemed unsafe are recycled at approved depots 5.5 Use of Non-Renewable Materials The company minimises the use of materials from non-renewable sources such as plastics. Unless required by customers, only wooden pallets are used. The use of shrink wrap is kept to a minimum commensurate with safety Issue 08 January 2019 Page 5 of 6

6 5.5 Recycling The company has a policy of recycling paper, cardboard, wood, printer cartridges and toners, oil and scrap metals. General Waste is removed from the site and disposed of in accordance with Local Authority bye laws. 6. Compliance No non-compliances have been recorded in the past five years and this policy is intended to ensure that this level of achievement is maintained. Whilst the company accepts the main responsibility for implementation of this Policy, individuals have a very important role in co-operating with others to safeguard the environment. Individuals therefore must recognise that they are obliged to abide by any rules and regulations made under authority of this Policy. 7. Continuous Improvement Within the limited and specific services provided by AFS Haulage Ltd, as the company is not involved in manufacture, and have to use products produced by others, there is only limited scope for improvement. This scope will embrace the following: The Company will continue to pursue its policy of seeking to use products which cause the least amount of damage to the environment The Company will continue to promote the need for environmental awareness by all employees and other stakeholders Issue 08 January 2019 Page 6 of 6
