1 Cruise Report Regional Monitoring Program Water Sampling Cruise #15 July 28-31, August 1, 4-6, INTRODUCTION This report describes activities associated with the third 1997 water sampling cruise of the Regional Monitoring Program for Toxic Contaminants in the San Francisco Estuary. Water samples were collected and distributed to five laboratories for analysis. Samples for the analysis of arsenic, mercury, and selenium were sent to Brooks-Rand, Ltd. in Seattle, Washington at the mid-point and end of the cruise. Samples for the analysis of other trace elements (cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, silver, and zinc) and ancillary measurements (salinity, total suspended solids, dissolved organic carbon, chlorophyll a, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, and orthophosphate) were retained by personnel of Dr. Russ Flegal s laboratory at University of California, Santa Cruz, at the conclusion of the cruise. Samples for analysis of total hardness were retained at the conclusion of the cruise by Applied Marine Sciences personnel for delivery to Union Sanitary District in Union City. Samples for analysis of trace organics were obtained by personnel of Dr. Wally Jarman at University of Utah. Measurement of surface water salinity, temperature, conductivity, ph, and dissolved oxygen were conductedby Flegal s group at each site, and the water column at each site (except Standish dam and Guadalupe slough) was profiled by AMS personnel for conductivity, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and optical back-scatterance. Additionaly, water samples for nickel speciation analysis were collected at eleven sites for Ryan Nelson of UC Berkeley, and water samples for Dr. K. Bruland of UC Santa Cruz were collected at Dumbarton Bridge. All sampling except for the two wetlands sites was conducted from the R/V David Johnston. 2.1 Objectives The objectives of this cruise were: 2.0 CRUISE REPORT 1) Collect water samples from 26 sites for analysis of total and dissolved trace elements. 2) Collect water samples from 18 sites for analysis of particulate and dissolved organic contaminants. 3) Collect water samples from 26 sites for analysis of salinity, total suspended solids, chlorophyll a, nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, orthophosphate, silicate), and dissolved organic carbon.
2 2.2 Personnel 4) Collect water samples for analysis of total hardness at sites where salinity is <5ppt. 5) Collect profiles of water-column temperature, conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and optical back-scatterance at 24 sites (not done at wetlands sites). 6) Collect water samples from 10 sites for aquatic toxicity testing. 7) Collect water samples from 13 sites for analysis of nickel speciation. 8) Collect water samples from the Dumbarton Bridge site for Dr. Ken Bruland of UC Santa Cruz. The personnel and work assignments for this cruise were as follows: Name Affiliation Duties Jonathan Crick (7/28-31) UCSC Trace Metal Chemistry Ignacio Rivera Duarte (7/28-31) UCSC Trace Metal Chemistry Angie Florez (8/4) UCSC Trace Metal Chemistry Jordan Gold (7/28-29, 8/1,4-6) AMS Cruise Manager, Aquatic Toxicity, CTD Andrew Gunther (7/28-29) AMS Cruise Manager, Aquatic Toxicity, CTD Sharon Hibdon (8/4-6) UCSC Trace Metal Chemistry Lisa Jacobsen (8/1,4-6) UU Organic Chemistry Wally Jarmin (7/28) UU Organic Chemistry Niki Mesterheide (7/28-31) UCSC Trace Metal Chemistry Yoshitaka Nagahama (7/30-31) U Hokkaido Observer Ben Owen (7/28-31) UU Organic Chemistry Rachel Ramirez (7/28-31, 8/4-6) UCSC Trace Metal Chemistry Genine Scelfo (8/4-6) UCSC Trace Metal Chemistry Gordon Smith (7/28-31, 8/4-6) UCSC Vessel skipper Josselyn Vedder (8/1, 4-6) UU Organic Chemistry 2.3 Activities Date Time Activity July 28, Mobilized gear aboard R/V David Johnston, Emeryville Marina, conducted safety briefing, departed for Oyster Point site (BB30) Sampled at Oyster Point, departed for San Bruno Shoal site (BB15).
