Energy Codes and Solar Moving Forward Together Joe Cain, P.E. Solar Energy Industries Association
About SEIA U.S. National Trade Association for Solar Energy Founded in ,000 member companies from all 50 states Our Mission: Build a strong solar industry to power America Our Goal: 100 gigawatts of solar capacity by 2020 November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 2
SEIA/GTM Market Data Q The U.S. solar industry installed 2,051 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaics (PV) in Q2 2016, bringing the total capacity nationwide to 31.6 gigawatts (GW). There is now enough solar in the United States to power more than 6.2 million homes and reduce carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons each year. This was the fourth largest quarter for the solar industry and the largest non-q4 ever. The U.S. solar industry installed more than 4 GW of capacity in the first half of For comparison, by this point last year, only 2.7 GW were installed. There are now 1,162,000 individual solar systems installed throughout the United States, including more than a million residential systems. November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 3
U.S. is a 50 state market Source: SEIA/GTM Research U.S. Solar Market Insight November 28, Solar Energy Industries Association 4
California s Loading Order, July 2005 The original Loading Order was based on what we knew to be true in 2005 Based on 2005 state of the art in building science (before most people called it building science ) Based on 2005 cost of solar 2005: It costs less to conserve a Btu than it does to generate a Btu. Q: What has changed since 2005? A: Everything November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 5
Solar Growth with the ITC November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 6
Growth in Solar led by Falling Prices Source: SEIA/GTM Research U.S. Solar Market Insight greentechmedia.com/research/ussmi Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Tracking the Sun November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 7
Residential Installations and Cost Reduction Greater savings are realized when solar is installed with original construction, rather than as a retrofit November 28, Solar Energy Industries Association 8
Comparison of 2006 IECC and 2015 IECC November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 9
Is It Really About the Envelope Only? Moving forward together: SEIA suggests a truly unbiased study to determine incremental cost and incremental value to compare compliance measures, including solar. November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 10
U.S. DOE: Whole-House Systems Approach November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 11
U.S. DOE: Whole-House Systems Approach November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 12
U.S. DOE: Zero Energy Ready Homes ZERH is clearly a positive step forward to our end goals On a breakaway run to the end zone, when you re down to the 5-yard line, why stop running? It s time to ask the DOE why they would not promote ZNE Homes as vigorously as promoting ZERH Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy SEIA will be encouraging DOE Efficiency and Renewables staff to work more closely together toward moving forward November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 13
Thinking Beyond the Envelope PV systems are sized for annual electrical demand. They serve more than just equipment needs This translates to greater savings and greater value to homeowners November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 14
Moving forward: Addressing concerns Financing tools: Ownership, lease, PPA Q: What s really important? A: The homeowner s utility bills Affordable housing: better affordability through lower utility bills REC s/srec s: Renewable Energy Credits REC s retired, or no compliance credit for renewables Is it possible a rooftop PV system could be removed? Possible, but extremely unlikely Why would homeowners want to increase their utility bills? SEIA has prepared preliminary analysis to show the benefit of solar has long-lasting benefits even in worst-case scenarios that are unlikely to occur Moving forward together: Isolate the real concerns from the hypotheticals, and address relevant concerns through a broad stakeholder group November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 15
SEIA Consumer Protection November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 16
The Home of the Future High quality envelope plus efficient equipment & lighting Renewable energy to offset building energy use Energy storage, to reduce concerns about grid penetration EV charging station, with transportation powered by sunlight Why all of this? So our children and children s children will expect nothing less November 4, Solar Energy Industries Association 17
