Exhibit 5. Energy-positive, low temperature anaerobic digestion technology (Lt-AD) NVP Energy presents its unique and innovative low temperature (< 20 C) Anaerobic Digestion (Lt-AD) wastewater (WW) treatment technology for low-strength effluent. And, yes! You did just read less than 20 degrees Centigrade, so this is a truly ambient temperature process for use in our cold northern European climate, without costly insulation and heating. If you have ever wondered why so many of the digesters located in our neighbouring UK (mesophilic and thermophilic variety), are a lot less productive than those un-insulated anaerobic digestion systems, which seem miraculously easy to build and operate in hot climates, it has got an awful lot to do with the Irish and UK climate being too cold and the cost of heating! NVP Energy offers an exciting new and innovative energy-positive, low temperature anaerobic digestion technology (Lt-AD). Lt-AD treats wastewater (WW) highly efficiently at temperatures as low as 4 C and will significantly reduce low strength wastewater treatment costs and TE charges. The Lt-AD technology target markets are Food & Drink WW including Dairy, Brewing, Malting and Distilling applications; Municipal WW; certain pharmaceutical WW streams and also ethanol processing WW. For more information visit: For Food & Drink plants that treat their wastewater on-site, NVP Energy can considerably decrease their aeration costs. In addition, the Lt-AD technology can reduce organic sludge volumes by up to 90% when compared to the activated sludge process thus reducing sludge management costs. The technology is very attractive as it has produced effluent which adheres to effluent release standards, e.g. Urban Wastewater Directive (UWWD) COD release standards, without the need for post-treatment. This is proven from our pilot-scale trials using our lowstrength effluent definition, a type of effluent that will apply to very many businesses. Benefits are listed as: Significantly reduced OPEX due to lower discharge costs through a high COD attenuation (approx. 80% removal rate) capability & reduced TSS levels (approx. 50% removal rate). Reduced OPEX up to 90% less organic sludge produced than the activated sludge system. Energy Efficient No WW heating or aeration required. Lt-AD has been successfully trialled at temperatures as low as 40C. Potential savings from biogas production can be used to generate electricity/heat that will offset use of fossil fuels. Potential revenue from biogas production FITs/RHIs for on-site energy generation. Modular design allows flexibility in WW volumes.
Integrates easily with existing WW treatment systems. Aids in adhering to specific discharge requirements e.g. UWWD Find out how to Reduce Effluent Disposal Costs in the Food and Drink Industry Using New Lt-AD Technology using innovative low temperature anaerobic digestion process developed in Ireland. Until now most industrial effluent has been treated aerobically, requiring high energy consuming aeration systems. Nowadays, increasingly clients with high strength effluents are turning to net energy generating anaerobic digestion (biogas) plants. So, why not treat the medium to low strengths effluents of the Food and Drink Industry this way, and save money? The problem has been the energy cost of raising large quantities of water to the high temperatures needed for traditional biogas reactors. To solve that problem, NVP Energy has developed a new anaerobic digestion process they call Low Temperature Anaerobic Digester to Reduce Effluent Disposal Costs - New Lt-AD Technology technology. It uses anaerobic digestion, but it doesn't need heating, and it produces a net energy output for sale, or use in the client's business. Business Owners: Consider installing your own Low Temperature Anaerobic Digester to Reduce Effluent Disposal Costs - New Lt-AD Technology can reduce wastewater treatment costs, while at the same time making your business greener and more sustainable by creating and using renewable biogas energy. 8 Exhibit 7. Vogelsang Mobile Test Trailer The Innovative Vogeslang Mobile Test Trailer Achieving efficient and economical operations of biogas plants The BioCrack system is a state-of-the art high voltage cell lysing system that prepares the sludge for maximised bio-gas yield and reduces solids content in sludge. The overall system uses mechanical maceration combined with an electrokinetic process that produces a liquid with the highest potential for making biogas and reducing solids compared to conventional slurry handling and reduction methods. The BioCrack provides the bacteria easier access to the nutrients in the bio-suspension. A high voltage field is generated by the electrokinetic disintegration process within the module. Exposure to the field degrades and breaks the cell walls of the organic matter. As a result, the nutrients within the cells are released to the fermenting bacteria. The result: increased gas yield, better utilisation of the substrates and less residual solids to dispose of. Typical Results. Adding a BioCrack affects each plant differently depending on the properties of the sludge or slurry. Average Results include: Increased Bio-gas yields up to 18%. Increased energy production. Enhanced digestion with less material consumption. Reduced process energy consumed by mixing. Shorter and more stable digestion cycles. Reduced dry solids content with better dewatering up to 21%. Reduced polymer consumption up to 18%.
The all-in-one Vogelsang mobile trailer unit allows potential customers and operators in the biogas industry across Ireland to experiment with a combination of innovative products and technologies over a set period of time. Operators can see the products in action on their own plant and analyse the results for improved optimisation and efficiency. The test trailer unit is equipped with the VX Q Rotary lobe pump (7.5kW suitable for 20-40mr.hr), RotaCut RC 5000 pro macerator (5.5kW), 4 BioCrack disintegration tubes and the control panel with VSD for pump speed control. The rotary lobe pump features pulsation-free HiFlo lobes that are resistant to foreign matter and dry running. Thanks to their compact design, self-priming and easy to service and maintain, the rotary lobe pump can handle abrasive media, highly viscous bio-suspensions and a variety of pumping tasks. RotaCut combines a robust macerator and heavy material separator in one. The rotating selfsharpening blades finely chop down fibrous and coarse materials. All heavy objects are separated by way of an integrated separator, which can easily be accessed through a cleaning port. Lastly, the BioCrack is an electrokinetic disintegration process using a high-voltage field to break up the agglomerations of dead organic matter and bacteria. This enhances the exposure of the nutrients contained in the bio-suspension to the bacteria within the digester resulting in a higher gas yield and better utilization of substrates. All of the trailer products are continuously monitored by the control panel, which makes necessary control adjustments to maintain optimum levels at all times. The test trailers provides reliable technology with advanced features altogether to achieve maximum efficiency and economy in biogas production.
Exhibit 8. Fungal Enzyme Applications in Bioenergy Research Vijai K. Gupta, Anthonia O Donovan, Mary C. Shier and Maria G. Tuohy TCBB, Molecular Glycobiotechnology Group, School of Natural Sciences, Discipline of Biochemistry, NUI Galway Due to the increasing concern about the environment a heightened interest in renewable energy occurred during the last decades. Production of biogas by anaerobic digestion is one of the cleanest ways of generating renewable energy Utilization of agricultural wastes and the OFMSW as substrate for anaerobic digestion in Ireland is an interesting option because the process treats the waste while it produces energy in the form of biogas. Practical problem when applying the process: Low hydrolysis (solid degradation) rates lead to long solid retention times and consequently large reactors, which increased the process costs. Enzymatically assisted digestion: Since the solid degradation rates is rate-limiting, pre-treating the substrate with hydrolytic enzymes can help improve the rates and accelerate the overall process.
Relevance to Bioenergy industry and commercial opportunities Enhanced biodegradability of agro-industry feedstocks Reduced solids retention times, reduction of costs and reactor volume Increased flexibility of the substrate Nutrient recovery, extraction of high-value biochemicals, VFAs, nutrients Biogas production: energy recovery in the form of biomethane
Exhibit 9. BioBase North West Europe EU 6.million Euro Project Bio Base NWE to Drive Growth of Bio-based Economy in North West Europe The 6.2 million project will work mainly with small and medium businesses (SME s) to help facilitate innovation and business development in bio-based technologies. Bio Base NWE will also provide training and education to help tackle the shortage of skilled professionals in North West Europe s bio-based industries. The Bio Base NWE partnership includes organizations from five different countries. Dr. Lieve Hoflack, Manager of the Bio Base NWE project, said: SME s have a vital role to play in Europe s journey towards the bio-based economy, which could be worth more than 2 trillion to the European economy by Bio-based products are a growing area of interest for SME s working in chemical industry, agro-industry, plastics, fuels, food, and textile and pharma industry. However, many SME s find it difficult to bridge the gap between newly developed research and the commercial market, she adds. The Bio Base NWE network, representing many leading bio-based economy experts, will advise SME s from across North West Europe on how to develop new ideas into marketable products. SME s can get financial support to demonstrate innovative bio-based technologies at an independent, state-of the-art demonstration facility in Ghent, Belgium. This flexible pilot plant will selectively invest in equipment for promising technologies to promote further growth. The partnership will also develop and deliver programs and tools for training skilled professionals for biobased industries. North West Europe is in an excellent position to take a leading role in the emerging bio-based economy. The region is home to a number of prominent research institutes in this field and has a leading chemical industry, including a strong representation of SME s which can provide a springboard for future development. 1.
