Subbaswamy, Peter Eklund, Burton Davis, University of Utah Rick Ernst, Ted Eyring, Ron Pugmire, Larry Anderson, Henk Meuzelaar, Brian Dunn, Adel Sarofim, Joe Shabtai, Kerry Kelley, Auburn University Christopher Roberts, Mario Eden, Christine Curtis, JoAnn Lighty, Jim Guin, Terry Baker, Ray Tarrer, University of Pittsburgh Irving Wender, Jack Sharkey, Jerry Holder, West Virginia University Mohindar Seehra, Dady Dadyburjor, Edward Kugler, John Zondlo, Al Stiller, Charter Stinespring, Jeff Peterson, Paul Jagodzinski, Naresh Dalal, Others George Hill, George Fumich,
Results CFFS program results are summarized in reports, technical presentations and publications, and student theses/dissertations contributed under dozens of professors at five universities over 25 years Overview of highlights follow Electronic copies of selected reports available on request
CFFS s Laboratory Results Developed more reactive and lower-cost catalysts for both F-T synthesis and catalytic refining Optimized reactor operating conditions for improved product quality & yields Developed novel reactors for improved product quality & yields Advanced the state of the art in the chemistry of F-T, catalytic refining, and pyrolysis processes Developed innovative techniques to better measure physical properties of products Bert Davis U of KY
Computer Simulation and Economic Analysis Results Developed improved unit operation models as well as integrated models of entire conversion plants Calculated benefits of laboratory breakthroughs on overall plant yields, economics, and environmental footprints Coal Biomass Solid wastes Computer Simulation of Gas Phase F-T Plant (Auburn)
CFFS Collaborative Network Advanced the State-of-the-Art of Chemical Conversion Engaged dozens of faculty, undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students in multi-institution research Built close collaborations among academic, government, and industry researchers Produced hundreds of publications and many patents; presentations at major fuels meetings Sustained a publicly-funded, U.S. fuels research program for a quarter century Provided human capital for workforce needs of industry, government, and academia
Recommendations CFFS is a model for advancing fundamental research - need to find ways to promote such collaborative programs Programs needed to develop next-generation technologies in fuels, chemicals, and hydrogen production (coal and natural gas) Workforce development in fuels and chemicals is recommended to ensure the pipeline of future technologists
Acknowledgements Primary supporters of this program were: DOE Office of Fossil Energy DOD Army TACOM Office. Other financial and participatory support provided by: DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy DOD Air Force Office of Research. Their support is gratefully acknowledged.
Acknowledgements CFFS team members benefited from expertise shared by the respective DOE and DOD program managers. We thank these individuals for their support and guidance.
