Integration of Antapaccay Project with Tintaya progressive closure plan Mauricio Quiroz Xstrata Copper Project Development Luis Espinoza Xstrata Tintaya Liz Espinoza Xstrata Tintaya 24 November 2010 Mine Closure 2010
Agenda 1. Introduction 2. Tintaya existing operation and closure Plan 3. Antapaccay Project Tintaya Extension 4. Integration Antapaccay Tintaya 5. Antapaccay Integrated Closure Plan 6. Conclusions
1. Introduction Xcu at a glance
1. Introduction - Location
1. Introduction - Background Mining at Tintaya started in 1985, now is nearing the depletion of reserves End of mining is expected in 2012 and oxide plant to be halted in 2014 Incorating Antapaccay will make possible to extend the operational continuity until 2034 As the rate of operation in Tintaya mine declines, Antapaccay starts up The current plans call for the use of Tintaya existing facilities, conserving the human resources and production capacity installed locally
2. Tintaya - existing operation Production rate: tpy Cu Concentrate tpy Cu Cathods oz/t Au in Cu Concentrate
2. Tintaya Closure Plan Open pit: Construction of a perimeter barrier 3 m high around the open pit Construction of a perimeter surface water drainage system Inundation of the pit Process Facilities: Cleanup and removal of geomembranes Dismantlement and demolition of buildings Shaping and grading of the ground Placement of Type A and B cover Mining Wastes facilities : Slope angles flattened to 22 (2.5:1) Construction of surface water drainage system Demolition of associates infraestructure Placement of Type A cover
2. Tintaya Closure Plan
3. Antapaccay Project Tintaya Extension
3. Antapaccay Project lay out
3. Antapaccay Project Tintaya Extension Concentrator plant considers 1 x 40 SAG + 2 x 26 balls mills Cu concentrate will be thickened and filtered at the mine before being transported to the Port of Matarani for shipment to smelters. The flotation tailings will be sent by gravity flow to the tailings thickening plant, where they will be thickened for discharge to the existing open pit at the Tintaya as the final disposal arrangement. The proposed throughput rate for the concentrator plant is t/d. The average annual concentrate production rate is to be approximately 370,000 t/year during the 22 year life of mine, with average concentrate grade of around 36% copper.
3. Antapaccay Project Tintaya Extension
4. Integration Tintaya - Antapaccay SINERGIES Antapaccay will use existing operating infrastructure at Tintaya, such as: Power and fresh water supply Drinking water supply plants Domestic wastewater treatment plants Tintaya Electrical Substation Offices, dining halls and camps Fuel tanks and refueling system (fuel pumps) Auxiliary Facilities (hospital, composting plant) Mining trucks and shovels Concentrate reception and weighting plant at the Port of Matarani; Tintaya Open Pit will be employed as a storage facility for the tailings of Antapaccay,
4. Integration Tintaya - Antapaccay TINTAYA PROGRESSIVE CLOSURE Tintaya progressive closure actions will be implemented for those facilities that reach the end of their useful lifespan and that are not to be used by Antapaccay, like: Tintaya leach processing facilities (plant, ponds, leach pad, tanks, etc.) Tintaya concentrator plant facilities (for sulfide ore processing), Ccamacmayo and Huinipampa Tailings Storage Facilities, Tintaya waste rock dumps 20, 23, 28, 70 and Central, Borrow site areas and limestone quarry.
5. Antapaccay Integrated Closure Plan All new and existing (Tintaya) facilities that will be used by Antapaccay will be subject to an integrated closure plan at the end of Antapaccay lifespan According with Xstrata Sustainable Standards, all Xstrata Operations and Projects must develop, maintain and implement closure plans according to: Compliant with Xstrata s Business Principles, Policies, Sustainable Development Standards, all applicable regulatory obligations, and international standards. Based on a robust process developed at the commodity business level for identifying and assessing all significant SD risks and controls. Annually reviewed, including a review of assumptions and costestimates, to address any changes in circumstances such as changes in legal requirements, new technologies, the local environmental and community situation, etc. Developed and reviewed by appropriately experienced and competent persons including external experts, as necessary.
Elevación aprox. 5. Antapaccay Integrated Closure Plan OPEN PITS Closure of accesses and posting of warning signs Removal of equipment and 4000 remaining structures from inside msnm the pits, Installation of perimeter barriers made of mine waste rock material piled 3 m high 3500 msnm The pumping of water to dewater the pits will be halted and the pits will be inundated. SW Nivel Piezométrico (futuro) Nuevo Tajo Río Cañipia 3000 msnm 0 km 2 km 4 km distancia aprox.
5. Antapaccay Integrated Closure Plan OPEN PITS Surface water stream diversion work will be disassembled and a portion (45% of wet season flow) of the Cañipia River will be diverted toward the pits to reduce the filling time. The hydrological model forecasts that the filling of the pits will take around 17 years to complete before discharge towards the Cañipía River starts. discharge towards the river will start. After this period it is estimated that such discharge will amount to an average rate of 350 l/s.
5. Antapaccay integrated closure plan WASTE ROCK DUMPS Closure of accesses, posting of warning signs and installation of perimeter barriers by means of piling material all around. Re-grading of slopes to overall of 2.5H:1V (22 ), made gentler from the original slopes. The re-grading of slopes is to result in an increase in the basal areas of the waste rock dumps by m at the North waste rock dump and m at the South waste rock dump. Covering over with material of Type A cover Construction of masonry perimeter channels to divert surface runoff During the progressive closure of the Tintaya waste rock dumps, field testing will be carried out to identify the most adequate species for use in revegetation.
5. Antapaccay integrated closure plan TAILINGS In the closure stage the facility will be filled with water until reaching the phreatic levels of the water table; thereafter, discharge will take place towards the watercourse of the Tintaya River through a spillway. The discharge through the spillway will commence at approximately 8 years after closure, and the resulting flow rate will be around 60 l/s. The remaining constructed works include the control of accesses and the removal of the remaining civil works and, additionally, the implementation of a rock cover 0.5 m hick in those areas were the tailings are not submerged.
5. Antapaccay integrated closure plan POST CLOSURE MONITORING ACTIVITIES post-closure monitoring for an estimated minimum period of 5 years in accordance with Peruvian standards and regulations. The post-closure monitoring will include items such as groundwater levels and quality, surface water flows and quality, air quality and, finally, flora and fauna. The exact points for monitoring and the parameters to be monitored to be maintained in the post-closure monitoring program will be determined in the years preceding closure based on the results and observations made at the points used during the Project lifespan.
5. Antapaccay integrated closure plan POST CLOSURE LAY OUT
6. Conclusions The startup of the Antapaccay Project will make it possible: to continue mining activities in Tintaya district Maintaining the continuity of the community investment and social development initiatives being executed in the nearby communities and prolonging the contribution to local and regional economic wellbeing. The use of the Tintaya pit as a tailings storage facility during the operation of the Antapaccay Project will constitute the first experience of this kind in Peru. It requires an additional monitoring and control effort to enable it to be assured to both the communities and the authorities that tailings disposal is being performed in a safe manner without affecting the environment or the communities in the surroundings. The simultaneousness with which the Antapaccay operation and the progressive closure of Tintaya will both be carried out, which is the reason why the operational risks involved in this scenario will need to be adequately controlled.
