3 The purpose of this experiment is to determine whether or not people will save energy if they are provided with useful data and an energy conservation survey.

4 Teaching society to use as minimum energy as possible can have an extravagant effect on the world. Simply turning off appliances and lights can save a great amount of energy.

5 Reusing products can save energy as well. If a product is used more than once, it will not have to be bought a second time. When people save the energy used to create the products, the amount of space needed for landfills reduces.

6 When buying or replacing light bulbs, families may want to consider looking at the lumens. Lumens are a measure of brightness. Today, special energy-saving light bulbs use 80 percent less energy with the same amount of light output from a standard light bulb.

7 Replacing filters provide more efficient heating and cooling in homes. Taking shorter showers and filling the sink with water when doing the dishes can save great amounts of energy.

8 At any point in the year, air leakages and energy loss can occur in homes, causing homeowner s energy bills to rise. One way to prevent this is by hiring an energy auditor to come and inspect the home.

9 Advancements in energy conservation include the following: harnessing of wind energy, solar energy, biomass, biofuels, geothermal power, and hydropower.

10 Hydropower is energy harnessed from flowing water that is converted into electricity. Researchers are finding ways to make hydropower more environmentally adaptable by creating turbines that do not harm fish or sea creatures.

11 Solar energy is energy provided by the sunlight. Solar panels convert sunlight to electricity for daily use. Solar panels are a tremendous way to save fossil fuels and help the world!

12 Biomass is an organic, renewable energy source that includes excessive agricultural products and forest residues. Organic resources that can be turned into biofuel are leftover crops, waste, and algae, but it does pollute the air from burning waste. In addition, it produces fewer pollutants in the air than fossil fuels.

13 In conclusion, there are countless ways to conserve energy. By making minor changes in daily routines, you can save both money and energy.

14 If participants receive an energy conservation audit to assess their energy use, then the amount of energy used in the local community will be reduced.

15 1. Energy Conservation Survey 2. Participants

16 The packets are sent out to the participants. Trial started Monday March 21 st. The first energy conservation survey is filled out. For a trial of three weeks, try and reduce energy usage. After the three week trial go through the survey again and circle your results in a different color. Fill out the data/graph portion of the packet and notice the total ECUS saved. Trial ended Monday April 11 th. Finally, have all household members sign the energy conservation contract.

18 From this experiment we can conclude that our hypothesis was supported. Out of eighteen participants, 56 percent saved energy.

19 The energy savers would like to thank our teacher Ms. Yovich, who gave us this wonderful opportunity to be able to conduct this excellent experiment on the topic of energy conservation. Secondly, we would like to thank the families that assisted us by participating in the energy conservation survey. Without the help of the NEED Organization, this energy conservation project would have been impossible!
