accelerate the commercialization of CCS by financial stimulation of research, development and demonstration 2
CLIMIT CLIMIT is the national programme for research, development, pilots and demonstration of technologies for CO2 capture, transport and storage (CCS) from power generation and industry. The programme is aimed at Norwegian companies, research institutions and universities and university colleges, preferably in cooperation with international companies and research institutions which can contribute to accelerate CCS commercialisation. CLIMIT supports technology projects in all parts of the development chain up to commercialisation. 3

CLIMIT: From research to demo. SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGY AND /OR SERVICE CONCEPTS FOR: CO 2 capture Compression and transport of CO 2 Long term storage of CO 2 and other areas of application involving permanent storage of CO 2. The CLIMIT programme provides funding for activities within all phases of development and demonstration (> 20 M /year) Side 5

CLIMIT PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES Effect orientet goals: CLIMIT will contribute to: Lower costs and earlier international realisation of CCS. CCS in Norwegian enterprises. Realisation of the storage potential in the North Sea. Result objectives: Projects supported by CLIMIT will contribute to: Knowledge and expertise to close technology gaps and increase safety. Ground breaking technologies and service concepts with international potential 8
CLIMIT S STRATEGY AND FOCUS AREAS CLIMIT HAS THREE FOCUS AREAS AND TARGETS NATIONAL PLAYERS WITH CCS POTENTIAL. 1. New innovative solutions thatcanyield considerable cost reductions and increased safety 2. Areas where Norway or Norwegian players have advantages in CCS 3. CCS in Norwegian industry for major CO2 point sources Environmental issues are covered in all three areas 9
New Programme Plan Norwegian version available now English version available within a few weeks
CO 2 capture test facility at the Norcem cement plant in Brevik, Norway Curernt Phase: Consept Study & Pre engineering
Norcem CO 2 capture project Main Goal: Determine the optimal CO 2 capture technology for the cement industry in Europe Establish a small scale test center for post combustion CO 2 capture testing in Brevik The only post combustion CO 2 capture project within the cement industry in Europe! Testing three technologies in parallel Welcome small scale up coming technologies to the test center The project cover only capture and release
CO 2 capture project in Brevik Partners: HeidelbergCement, Norcem AS and ECRA (European Cement & Research Academy) Strong co operation with R&D Institutes; Tel Tek Project plan: Completed phase: 13,5 Mkr Concept Study & Pre engineering % funding from Gassnova (Climit program) Three concepts evaluated: 1) Aker Clean Carbon (Amine technology) 2) Alstom (Chilled ammonia technology) 3) Alstom (Carbonate Looping technology) These three technologies form the design basis of the small scale test center and will enter the test center first, in test phase 1.
HSE related to Amine emissions from capture plants 11 CLIMIT projects since 2008 Total budget 7 M Norwegian as well as international institutes Funded by CLIMIT and industry Areas: Capture plant, atmosphere and recipient Summary: MEA (monoethanolamine) it self is not problematic MEA degradation in atm. does not give nitrosamines MEA degradation in atmosphere gives nitramine Small amounts of alkyl amines found in solvent Nitrosamines has short lifetime in the atmosphere Studies also conducted by: TCM Emission permit application (test rig) CCM Qualify technology and secure fair competition between vendors 14
TCM is the world s largest facility for testing and improving CO 2 capture. Knowledge gained will prepare the ground for CO 2 capture initiatives to combat climate change world wide.
TCM Highlights Government policy: No carbon based power generation in Norway without CCS State and Statoil agreed 2-staged approach: 1: Demonstrate and develop capture technologies (TCM) 2: Build large scale (1 mtons CO2/year) capture plant 2009 Investment decision taken for TCM: = USD1Billion Partnership established (TCM DA) 2012 Five year initial test period started
