Metric Unit Value Comments 1(e) Overall budget of the body Specify approximate /annum for the report year. Budget Budget Comments (f) Report year Specify the report year. Report Year Academic Report Year Comments 1(g) Context Provide a summary of the body s nature and functions that are relevant to climate change reporting. The college operates from three buildings on a single campus. One is a traditionally-built, 9-year old building. The other two are carefully designed low-energy, low-carbon buildings. One of these buildings has an "A+" EPC and in operation should be "carbon positive". The college has taken a lead role in education and training in the construction industry to promote sustainability across the curriulum and to the private and public sector. This is one of the college's 3 key priorities in its Strategic Plan. The college student numbers have grown since 2008 by 60%. Despite that, with the two low energy/net carbon positive newer buildings, the college's overall carbon footprint has fallen. This is a remarkable achievement.
3 PART 2: GOVERNANCE, MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGY 2(a) How is climate change governed in the body? Provide a summary of the roles performed by the body s governance bodies and members in relation to climate change. If any of the body s activities in relation to climate change sit outside its own governance arrangements (in relation to, for example, land use, adaptation, transport, business travel, waste, information and communication technology, procurement or behaviour change), identify these activities and the governance arrangements. The College Board of Management has overall responsibility for the governance of all aspects of the college's activity. The responsibility for Carbon Reporting is devolved to a sub-group of the Sustainability Group. The Sustainability Group meets 5 times a year to monitor and implement policies and approaches to promote sustainable behaviours. The Sustainability Group reports to the College Management Team where the issues are discussed and iniatives are implemented. The governance of climate change and sustainability is influenced by: UN SDGs, UK and Scottish Government agendas, SFC guidance, Regional Outcome Agreement Guidance and Education Scotland. The Fiannce and Resources Committee of the College Board of Management reviews mitigation activity and all projects that lead to lower energy use or lower emissions. They also monitor progress towards sustainble approaches in energy and resoruce use and waste management to recycling or landfill. 2(b) How is climate change action managed and embedded by the body? Provide a summary of how decision-making in relation to climate change action by the body is managed and how responsibility is allocated to the body s senior staff, departmental heads etc. If any such decision-making sits outside the body s own governance arrangements (in relation to, for example, land use, adaptation, transport, business travel, waste, information and communication technology, procurement or behaviour change), identify how this is managed and how responsibility is allocated outside the body (JPEG, PNG, PDF, DOC) It is embedded in the colleges strategic and operational plans. One of three Strategic Priorities is to promote sustainable behaviours. This priority is translated into actions and targets in every managers operational plan. It is also a reference point in lesson plans used by lecturing staff and in the college's self-evaluation and improvemnet approaches. Climate change and sustainability is managed throughout the College by the dissemination of information from the Sustainability Group to the College Management Team and from there to all staff and students. It is embedded into the organisation by; IT systems, Operational Plans, Self Evaluation, Curriculum Development, student questionnaires and the introduction to new technologies. The new environmental dashboard for all lecturing staff will let each individual know the impact of their photocopying on the environment. 2(c) Does the body have specific climate change mitigation and adaptation objectives in its corporate plan or similar document? 7 2(f) What are the body s top 5 priorities for climate change governance, management and strategy for the year ahead? Provide a brief summary of the body s areas and activities of focus for the year ahead. Governance: The Property and Estates Committee will be be integrated this year with the Finance Committee. This will enable both groups to have ready access to information on Sustainability and the financial investment/benefits in a single committee for the purposes of effective and eficient governance. Management: Promote annually environmental sustainability to all staff and students, reiterate messages about waste minimisation. Students: Hold a "Green Day" as a focal point in the year for students. Energy use: Continue to monitor with a view to identify any areas where this may be creeping up again. Travel: Employ a Campus Cycling Officer to promote lowenergy transport options. Waste: Reduce waste and improve the management of our waste streams. Photocopying: Renew Photocopier contract and in the new contract provide each member of staff and every student with an environmental dashboard that informs them of the carbon impact of the photocopying they carry out. 2(g) Has the body used the Climate Change Assessment Tool(a) or equivalent tool to self-assess its capability / performance? If yes, please provide details of the key findings and resultant action taken. No 2(h) Supporting information and best practice Provide any other relevant supporting information and any examples of best practice by the body in relation to governance, management and strategy. The college is a winner of a Green Gown Award for its Outstanding BREAM (2014) new building. This is the first building in the UK to achieve this award. The building is net zero carbon and although we have increased our student population by 60% our carbon emissions have reduced, not risen. The Cycle to work scheme and new Cycling Officer will help promote a step change in travel arrangements. The college continues to develop its IT systems to reduce duplication of workload and reduce reliance on paper-based adminsitration systems. The new photocopier contract monitors each copy and sends a reprot to users on the amuont of carbon used by them in the copying/printing process. The college was the first in Scotland to achieve the NUS Responsible Futures Award, has 4 awards for sustainable approaches and is winner of the UK Green Gown Awards organised by the EAUC. Ground source heat pumps are the sole heat source in 2 campus buildings and a partial heat source in one. Rainwater harvesting systems are in 2 of the 3 buildings on campus. The impact of rainwater harvesting in terms of energy saving and carbon saving is with Scottish Water rather than the college as an organisation. However it enabled a lighter infastrucre for drainage when constructing the new building.
