2 VILLAGE OF FLORIDA OHIO ELEVATED STORAGE TANK THM REMOVAL SYSTEM Purposes: to demonstrate the THMRS technology in general To demonstrate the removal at different locations To quantify the additional benefit from installing additional treatment capacity (i.e. consider use of 10 HP/0.66 MGD instead of 5 HP/0.33 MGD) Pilot designed to incorporate a 50 gpm pilot nozzle with similar characteristics of the full scale Medora Co. THMRS Nozzles (thousands of laser punched orifices) Float assembly and hose assembly are ready for installation of the. nozzle/pump assembly Pilot was filled with 500 gallons of site specific water and operated through at least three detention times Pilot was NOT required by Ohio EPA. However, owner & engineer chose to perform due diligence and explore the capabilities of the technology through piloting. THM Removal Unit fully operational within the Florida Elevated Tank. Note: 5.6 miles from Napoleon to Florida, and 2.4 miles from Florida to Okolona Pipe from Napoleon to Florida is about 77,000 gallons with 25,000 gpd flow, or about 3 days water age. From Florida to Okolona is about 33,000 gal water usage for Okolona uncertain, approx to 10,000 gpd max., so water age is about 3 to 6 days. Example of a roof mounted ventilating blower. 3 Summarized Case Study: GA-74 Rockdale Water Resources (FW) Conyers, GA Key words: Conyers, GA, RW reservoir, iron, manganese, dissolved oxygen, short-circuiting, chemical savings Photos: Top photo shows one of two SolarBees in the plant s pretreatment reservoir; second photo shows placement of both units in the reservoir. Owner: Rockdale Water Resources, Conyers, GA; Lee Pope, Manager, Tel.: Reservoir or Lake Use: Man-made lined storage reservoir which receives water from Black Shoals Lake. This reservoir serves as a raw water source for the city of Conyers, GA. System Overview and Reservoir Data: Surface area is 6 acres; volume is 20 MG and maximum depth is 15 ft. when full. Design flow to water treatment plant is 22 MGD. Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation: High levels of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) entering the treatment plant, short-circuiting, low levels of dissolved oxygen (DO). SolarBee Installation: Date: November 2002; installed two (2) SB10000 units with 24-hour kits; a chemical injection kit was also installed on one SolarBee. Results: Soon after installation, the manager reported DO levels at near saturation and significant reductions in Mn concentrations. Testing in 2003 and 2004 indicated relatively high levels of Fe and Mn coming from the feeder lake (i.e., Black Shoals Lake). From fall through spring (when Black Shoals Lake is naturally mixed and oxygenated), influent concentrations averaged 1.2 mg/l Fe and 0.2 mg/l Mn. During summer stratification of Black Shoals Lake, influent concentrations averaged 1.8 mg/l Fe and 0.35 mg/l Mn. Although testing showed large amounts of Mn entering the reservoir, concentrations entering the water treatment plant were significantly reduced. As influent water goes through the SolarBee pond, with a 1-2 day detention time, there was about a 20% average reduction in Fe and a 50% average reduction in Mn. The use of chemicals for precipitating these metals has been minimized. The manager is very pleased with both the significant improvements in water quality as well as the customer service PSI has provided him. Owner: Newton County Board of Commissioners, Covington, City of, Georgia; Contact: Jason Nord, Water Production Director; Telephone: Mobile ; System Overview: Lake Varner is a large habitat for avian wildlife, and provides drinking water and recreational activities to the residents of Covington and Newton County. Lake Varner is known as an excellent fishing destination as well as an important source of raw water. It is an 850+ acre man-made reservoir that feeds the Cornish Creek WTP in Newton County, GA. The plant s production capacity is currently around 10 to 12 mgd, and future flows are forecasted to be over 25 mgd. Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation: In recent years Lake Varner experienced problems associated with blue-green algae, which can contribute to taste and odor problems in drinking water and be potentially toxic to fish and wildlife. Environmentalists have identified an emerging neurological problem with certain bird species and speculate that toxins existing within certain blue-green algae strains are the cause. It has been verified that the blue-green algae within Lake Varner contains very high levels of these toxins. Newton County previously used chemicals to control the algae growth, but increased costs for the chemicals in recent years led county leaders to research new options for keeping the water supply safe. SolarBee Installation: Date: On 4/25/2013 the city installed 12 SolarBee SB10000HWv18 units in Lake Varner, as an epilimnetic deployment. Primary objectives for the installation are to provide long-distance circulation in order to control harmful blue-green algae blooms and reduce taste and odor issues. Results: In early 2013, the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority approved financing for the Newton County board of commissioners to purchase and install solar-powered reservoir circulators called SolarBees in Lake Varner. The SolarBees saved the county approximately $250,000 in annual chemical costs the first year. The county will see a total return on investment with the SolarBees in about four years. The SolarBees have completely eliminated the need for algaecide application and have lowered the PAC (powdered activated carbon) usage by at least 75%. Taste and odor issues have been resolved. The SolarBee circulators are an important investment for the community, improving the water quality of Lake Varner, reducing system costs, safeguarding public health and protecting the ecosystem. (Butch) Gaddy III, Public Works Director, Tel: Reservoir or Lake Use: Both lakes are used as raw water supply reservoirs for the water treatment plant serving the City of Palmetto, GA. System Overview and Reservoir: City Lake: surface area is 36.4 acres, maximum depth is 15 ft with an average depth of about 10 ft. Children s Lake: surface area of 22.6 acres with maximum depth of 25 ft and an average depth of about 20 ft. Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation: The lakes had a history of blue-green algae blooms causing taste and odor problems created by the algal release of MIB and geosmin, as well as undesirablyhigh concentrations of manganese (up to about 0.9 mg/l) and iron (about 1.7 mg/l). The primary objective is to increase dissolved oxygen concentrations in order to oxidize and lower concentrations of soluble manganese and iron, with the secondary objective to control blue-green algae blooms and prevent associated taste and odor problems. SolarBee Installation: Date: June 2004, installed two (2) SB10000 units in City Lake, and one (1) SB10000 in Children s Lake. Results: During the first year, manganese concentrations were lowered to about 0.05 mg/l, and have remained low since. Blue-green algae blooms have also been controlled, eliminating the associated taste and odor problems. Both the operator and the Palmetto Water District are very happy with the SolarBees, the realized benefits from circulation, and the support provided by SolarBee staff. Owner: City of Union Point, GA. Contact person: David Stephens, Superintendent, Tel: Reservoir or Lake Use: Sherrill s Creek Reservoir is the raw water supply reservoir for the city of Union Point, with a water treatment plant (WTP) situated adjacent to the lake. Outflow to the plant is approximately 0.2 MGD, and the reservoir has a hydraulic detention time of about 774 days. System Overview and Reservoir: This man-made reservoir has a surface area of about 48 acres, with an average depth of 10 ft and a maximum depth of 14 ft near the dam. Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation: The reservoir had a history of blue-green algae blooms, as well as high manganese and iron concentrations, both of which caused taste and odor problems. The WTP reported levels of manganese entering the plant during the summer typically around 7 mg/l, and as high as 20 mg/l. The objectives for installing SolarBees in the reservoir are to reduce levels of iron and manganese entering the treatment plant, eliminate the need for chemical treatments to control algal blooms, and improve digestion of organics in the reservoir for long-term improvement in levels of THMs (trihalomethane) and HAAs (haloacetic acid). SolarBee Installation: Date: June 2005, installed two (2) SB10000v12 units one unit placed in the center for algae control with intake set above the thermocline, and the second unit deployed near the water intake to the WTP with the intake set deep for keeping water entering the WTP oxic for manganese control. Results: During the first summer, manganese concentrations coming in to the WTP dropped from approximately 3 mg/l to about 0.3 mg/l. After fine-tuning intake hose depths, manganese concentrations dropped even further to < 0.1 mg/l, eliminating the need to add potassium permanganate for mitigation. In the 20 years the superintendent has been at the WTP, he has never seen manganese concentrations in the raw water entering the plant so low. Blue-green algae bloom control has also been achieved with excellent results, including the absence of taste and odor complaints since installations and eliminating the need for costly toxic chemicals applications or grid-powered aeration. The City is very satisfied with their investment in SolarBees, and the superintendent appreciates very much the improved water quality and more stable consistency of raw water entering the WTP.
