14 Mining Eco- and climate-friendly transport solutions for raw materials ContiTech s energy-saving conveyor belts transport raw materials in China Raw materials are the treasures of our planet. They are fundamental to progress and to the capacity of any industrial economy to perform. But they are rarely processed in the same place as they are mined. In terms of transport mass, Asia leads the world, with almost 13,000,000,000 tons of materials transported every year. Moving the Earth s resources as quickly, cost efficiently and safely as possible and with minimum harm to the environment is a technological challenge we face again and again. For mine operators, this raises the question as to what technical solutions are most efficient for transporting raw materials away from where they were mined? This is where conveyor belts by ContiTech come in, playing a key role by providing an energy-saving, climatefriendly means of transport. ContiTech belts use just a fraction of the energy conventional transport systems use and emit significantly less CO 2. A study by the worldfamous Institute for Mining and International Mining at the Technical University of Clausthal in Germany shows that if conveyor belt usage rose from its current level of 30 percent to 50 percent over the next 30 years, an incredible 340,000,000 tons of CO 2 could be saved.
