The beautiful Wadden Sea 4
The stormy North Sea 5
The Challenge IPCC 2013: Temperature rise: 1 to 4 degree Celsius Sea-level rise: 0,2 to 0,8 Meter Stronger erosion along the outer coasts Reduction of inter-tidal flats and salt marshes A Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the Wadden Sea 2100 Frenzel
Strategy for the Wadden Sea 2100 The Project Aim of the strategy is to maintain present functions and structures as well as the integrity of the Wadden Sea ecosystem in a changing climate Project members do not only come from State authorities (marine protection and coastal risk management), but also from NGO s and municipal stakeholders
Adaptation: it is all about Sediment In order to maintain structures and functions of the Wadden Sea, it is necessary to balance the sediment deficits induced by SLR It is assumed that this may be implemented most efficiently by concentrating sediment suppletion at locations where natural forces organize an optimal redistribution in the Wadden Sea The sediment should come from outside the system (> 15 m water depth) in order to have a net positive effect in the Wadden Sea At critical erosive locations like the west coast of Sylt it may become necessary to balance deficits with local replenishments Balancing sediment deficits with sand is in any way ecologically more sound than alternative hard measures
Coming Activities A compendium with relevant knowledge Optimized consideration of climate change in our hydro-morpho-biological monitoring program A Wadden Sea model to conduct simulations A sediment management concept Pilot projects BASEWAD - balancing sediment deficits in the Wadden Sea Where does the sediment, nourished along the outer coast of Sylt (45 million m³ since 1984), remain?
