With the announcement of the Green Energy Act, Ontario seeks to be the preferred destination for green jobs, green investment, and green energy (George Smitherman, previous Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, February 23, 2009). Mohawk s new program is well aligned with the above provincial goal and the new Green Energy Act. The program focuses on clean (e.g. nuclear power) and renewable energy (energy generated from natural sources such as sunlight, wind, geothermal heat, bio-fuels that can be replenished), and strategies for their integration with more conventional power sources. It is intended to prepare graduates to become active participants in the realization of green energy targets and will provide an excellent foundation upon which to build additional technological competencies as new technologies emerge.
28.8% of the current electricity workforce is expected to retire in the next four years (Electricity Sector Council, 2009) Within the next 20 years, nearly 80% of the Province s existing generating capacity will need to be replaced, including nuclear facilities. Ontario s Green Energy Act will create jobs in: - Manufacturing and assembly - Construction and Engineering - Maintenance and servicing - Architecture and design - Installation and inspections - Home audit and retrofitting - Transportation and logistics - Finance and auditing - Computer software/hardware development (
Program is unique in introducing a multi-disciplinary approach that focuses on the generation, capture, storage, and distribution of clean and renewable energy and their integration with conventional systems. Currently 2 million smart meters in place, and Ontario leads the rest of Canada in the implementation of this technology Clustered program with Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology programs to establish foundational knowledge for more complex clean and renewable technology courses in subsequent semesters 4 intense customized courses in solar, wind, geo-thermal/solar-thermal and biotechnology through the duration of the program Students will learn to relate to and integrate both supply-side and demand-side energy management and conversion issues.
12 MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES INCLUDING: Apply theoretical principles of renewable and clean energy systems and technologies to analyze and solve complex technical problems. Use a variety of troubleshooting techniques and test equipment to identify problems with electrical and/or mechanical components of conventional, renewable and clean energy technologies. Design, build and troubleshoot working prototypes of sustainable energy systems & subsystems to meet job requirements, functional specifications and relevant standards; integrate renewable and clean energy technology into the system design. Apply strategies, practices and techniques to manage and optimize the generation, capture, storage, integration and distribution of renewable (e.g. wind, solar, geothermal etc.) and clean energy (e.g. nuclear) using conventional and emerging technologies such as smart metres and smart grids. Analyze, design and retrofit existing conventional systems applying green energy management techniques for efficient and clean energy generation and distribution. Develop strategies and practices to effectively manage and optimize the generation, capture, storage, integration and distribution of energy from conventional, renewable, and/or clean energy sources.

Provide pathways for technology diploma graduates of Ontario Colleges and internationally educated engineers and technologists to advance their professional goals. As Ontario will require additional energy sources, such as nuclear, wind, solar as well as conservation measures, it is clear that the energy industry will require a large number of highly qualified persons to meet the expected demand.
The proposed degree program supports the Ontario government s agenda which enables new immigrants to become effective participants in the economy. The management component of this degree will provide students with important complementary skills which may not been developed in their previous education. Prepare graduates for P.Eng.
