2 Multi-Passage otary Unions A rotary union, also referred to as a rotary joint or rotating union, provides a seal between a stationary supply pipe or tube and rotating equipment such as a drum, index table, clutch, or spindle to permit the flow of heat transfer or cooling media into and/or out of the rotating equipment. Power and fluid transfer media typically used with rotary unions and rotary joints include hydraulic fluids, cutting fluids, air, or inert gas. Other media could include steam, water, thermal oil, and coolant. Multi-passage rotary unions are required when more than one media are used simultaneously. The rotary union provides multiple, independent passages for the same or several different media types to different rotating feed points in the same axis. In most cases, each passage needs to be isolated from other passages especially when different media cannot mix. The key to reliability in these cases is dependable sealing technology.
