3 Overview History and Status of LWR in China Chinese nuclear power development plan start in 1970s, and there were three main steps of our technology development and LWR construction: CNP300 Gen II + Tec Self design\manufacture\ construction\operation AP1000/CAP1000 Gen III Tec introduction/ absorption/innovat ion Gen II + Tec Import M310/AES91
4 Overview History and Status of LWR in China Gen III era(2007-):unified technology roadmap, the country s new nuclear technology development strategy the State Council has made a nuclear development strategic policy, listing CAP1400 program as one of Chinese National Science and Technology Major Project Three steps for the nuclear energy development in China 1) Thermal neutron reactor(pwr) 2) Fast reactor 3) Controllable fusion reactor AP1000 CAP1000 CAP1400 CAP Series Passive GIII PWR Technology imported from WEC Standardization : Localization Design + feedbacks + Safety enhanced after Fukushima Own large-scaled advanced nuclear power technology with proprietary intellectual property rights
5 Chinese Nuclear Power Development Plan Future Space On Oct. 24, 2012, Chinese government issued amid to long term nuclear development plan( ), which has decided GIII AP1000 technology and its successive re-innovation technology as future trends of nuclear power, and new LWR application to be approved.
6 Chinese Nuclear Power Development Plan State Policy Premier Li Keqiang stressed that in case of the highest international safety standards and ensure the safety, in the eastern coastal launch of some new nuclear power project timely On April , National Energy Commission held its second plenary meeting
7 Chinese Nuclear Power Safety Plan State council ( March ), after Fukushima Nuclear Accident To initiate a thorough checking and evaluation for all the nuclear facilities in China immediately To focus on safety review of NPPs in operation To review NPPs under construction against the most advanced standards thoroughly To suspend approval of new NPP projects to the completion of national nuclear safety plan
8 Chinese Nuclear Power Safety Plan NNSA-Stress test( ),concluded For units in operation, China nuclear power plants are safe with improving areas on: Seismic and seismically induced floods and others SBO mitigation and emergency electricity supply Hydrogen control and mitigation SFP cooling and make-up Emergency responses and preparedness Severe accident mitigation and guideline For units under construction, no project is of significant safety concern.the QA system is effective, and the construction quality is under control. However, some improvements needed to reply to Fukushima accident feedback.
9 Chinese Nuclear Power Safety Plan NNSA- The generic technical requirements for improvements of NPP after Fukushima accident issued June 2012, covering: Improvement of NPP capability to withstand flood Improvement of emergency make-up and associated equipments Improvement of mobile power supply Improvement of SFP monitoring Improvement of hydrogen monitoring and control system Improvement of habitability of emergency control center and its function Improvement of radiation monitoring and emergency preparedness and emergency response Improvement of NPP s capability to withstand external hazards

15 Chinese Nuclear Power Status & Prospect Situation 22 Units in Operation with the total Capacity of ~16GW 27 Units Under Construction with the total capacity of ~33GW and ~40% of world nuclear power unit under construction. New projects will be most possibly approved such as Haiyang Phase II, Sanmen Phase II, Lufeng Phase I, Xudabao Phase I, Shidaowan(CAP1400), Hongyanhe 5&6, Fuqing 5&6 in very near future. Most projects will encourage to use CAP1000/CAP1400 technology. However Hualong 1# upgrades from CNP1000 and CPR1000 based on M310 would also be applied possibly. Similar number of projects would start construction afterwards every year before 2020.

19 Chinese Nuclear Power Status & Prospect Challenges Regulatory framework improvement, such as risk informed and performance based, BDBA, etc. Decommissioning: cost High level waste geologic disposals: take action Advanced recycling technologies to deal with high level waste Public acceptance KK
20 Summary The world needs nuclear energy to power the economy and better the environment, so does China. Chinese government is supporting nuclear power and China is capable of implementing the nuclear power development in a controllable, safe and healthy manner. The fast growing market attracts more investors into NPP industry. GIII CAP1000 and CAP1400 will be the main trend NPP in China. Chinese nuclear power development plan will not only provide clean and affordable energy for China, but also benefit the world.
