2015 Sustainability Goals S O L U T I O N S F O R A B E T T E R, S A F E R, H E A LT H I E R W O R L D
DuPont s vision is to be the world s most dynamic science company, creating sustainable solutions essential to a better, safer, healthier life for people everywhere. To Our Stakeholders: At DuPont, we have transformed our company several times since our founding in 1802, constantly challenging ourselves with this question: Are we doing the right things to build a stronger company, help solve the world s toughest challenges, and build a brighter future for people and our planet? At the heart of our transformation to a science company is the imperative for sustainable growth putting our science to work to develop sustainable, global solutions. From our first safety rules in 1811 to our first statement of environmental responsibility in 1938, our core values have guided DuPont on a path to sustainability, even as the concept itself has evolved. In the 1970s and 1980s, our focus was on internal safety and meeting environmental regulations. In the late 1980s and 1990s, we focused on voluntary footprint reduction, going beyond regulatory requirements and pursuing a goal of zero safety and environmental incidents. We looked to increase shareholder value as we reduced our emissions and decreased our raw material and energy use. We now see ourselves in a third phase of sustainable growth, characterized by a holistic approach, fully integrated into our business models. In this phase, safety and environmental protection are market-driven business fundamentals throughout the global value chain. Working in partnership with others, we are building sustainability into our products themselves as well as into the way we make them. Sustainability is central to our total value proposition, impacting not only our business, but every customer and every consumer we touch, everywhere in the world. DuPont s 2015 Sustainability Goals span all of our operations from R&D to manufacturing to marketing. They go beyond traditional footprint reduction to include goals that tie our business growth even more directly to the development of safer and environmentally improved new products for the many global markets we serve transportation, construction, agriculture, and communications, to name a few. While we have made progress, we recognize we have more to do. Science and innovation are about the future, and we will honor our commitment to the future by directing our science to sustainable growth not as a distant goal, but as an immediate reality for DuPont employees and our extended family of customers and partners around the world. Chad Holliday Chairman & Chief Executive Officer A DuPont scientist applies nanotube research in flexible electronics, which could enable thinner displays that use less material. A DuPont scientist develops new biofuels in a state-of-the-art fermentation lab at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware. DuPont Fuel Cells is driving the technology necessary to make fuel cells a commercial reality in the near- and long-term, enabling clean, efficient energy. At the DuPont R&D Center in Shanghai, scientists target innovations for needs in the Asia Pacific region.
2015 Sustainability Goals: Serving the Marketplace Environment, Energy, and Climate Environmentally Smart Market Opportunities from R&D Efforts: By 2015, DuPont will double our investment in R&D programs with direct, quantifiable environmental benefits for our customers and consumers along our value chains. Products that Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: By 2015, DuPont will grow our annual revenues by at least $2 billion from products that create energy efficiency and/or significant greenhouse gas emissions reductions for our customers. We estimate these products will contribute at least 40 million tonnes of additional CO 2 equivalent reductions by our customers and consumers. Revenues from Non-Depletable Resources: By 2015, DuPont will nearly double our revenues from non-depletable resources to at least $8 billion. Safety Products that Protect People: DuPont will enhance our focus on protecting people. We will increase the amount of R&D spent on developing and bringing to market new products that will protect people from harm or threats. Between now and 2015, we will introduce at least 1,000 new products or services that help make people safer globally. Bio-PDO, which can be made using corn as the raw material, is the key ingredient for Sorona, used in apparel and carpeting and other applications. Turnout coats made of DuPont TM Nomex help firefighters manage the extremes of heat while delivering incredible lightness and durability. The DuPont StormRoom with Kevlar helps protect people from the impact of hurricanes and tornadoes. DuPont SentryGlas Plus offers superior strength, allowing larger windows and doors to meet hurricane code requirements.
Meeting global market needs through science and innovation Since 1802, DuPont has been awarded patents for more than 34,000 inventions, which means that, on average, we have introduced a new innovation every other day for the last two centuries. The majority of those discoveries have come in the second half of our history, with the pace rapidly accelerating the closer we get to the present. These innovations are delivering benefits in both safety and environmental protection to markets around the world. For example, through our focus on biology, DuPont will help transform a petroleum-based economy to one that increasingly utilizes non-depletable resources and is characterized by more efficient use of resources overall. DuPont introduced low-dose crop protection chemicals in agriculture with sulfonylureas (SUs), environmentally acceptable herbicides that work by inhibiting a key enzyme that weeds need to grow. SUs leave little to no residue and degrade rapidly in soil. The DuPont Qualicon BAX system is a fast and accurate way to detect bacteria, including Salmonella and E. coli 0157:H7, in food ingredients and finished products. Agriculture & Food Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., a subsidiary of DuPont, dramatically increases and enhances the world s food supply by using advanced plant genetics to develop field crops that are more productive, of higher quality, more nutritious, and better suited for specific uses. The DuPont Clean & Disinfect business supplies products and expertise to help customers keep the food supply safe. For example, Virkon S, the world s premier veterinary disinfectant, has been specified by the United Nations and has demonstrated its effectiveness against the H5N1 bird flu virus. Pioneer brand low linolenic soybeans are used to produce soybean oil that eliminates the need for hydrogenation, a process that creates trans fats, which have been linked to heart disease and other health concerns. The Solae Company, a joint venture created with Bunge Ltd., is involved in the research and application of soy protein and other ingredients to meet the growing demand for better tasting, more nutritious foods and beverages. Farmers in Latin America increase crop yield with the help of DuPont high-yield seeds and crop protection solutions.
Communications DuPont Imaging Technologies offers DuPont Cyrel FAST, Cromaprint and Artistri digital printing systems that are environmentally smart, with no processing solvents to handle, store, or recycle. They also use significantly less water, ink, and energy than conventional printing systems. DuPont technology is used in miniaturized fuel cells for consumer electronics to enable continuous power for laptops and cell phones, while using less energy. Building & Construction DuPont Tyvek Weatherization Systems are used in millions of homes to combat water, moisture, and air infiltration. DuPont Tyvek HomeWrap forms a protective skin on a home, helping to keep wind and rain out. DuPont Tyvek AtticWrap creates a sealed attic system, reducing air leakage and energy loss through the roof. DuPont has eight products used in photovoltaic solar panels. The company is investing in continued expansion of these products and is innovating next-generation solutions to help improve solar module lifecycle and efficiency. DuPont SentryGlas Plus and DuPont StormRoom with Kevlar help provide protection against hurricane-force winds and airborne debris. DuPont certified limited combustible cable has insulation and jacket materials that are specifically engineered to reduce smoke generation and flame spread. It also offers environmental benefits compared to typical wire and cable jacketing and insulation materials it is free of heavy metals, phthalates, PBB and PBDE. DuPont Abandoned Cable Services supports the removal and recycling of abandoned copper communications cable, which is typically combustible and is present in many commercial buildings today. Looking to the future, we are working in partnership with Environmental Defense to develop a framework for responsible development, production, use, and disposal of nano-scale materials critical to next generation communications devices. A joint venture between DuPont and U.K.-based Tate & Lyle is building one of the world s largest bio-materials facilities in Tennessee. It will convert corn sugar into Bio-PDO, the key renewable ingredient that is used to make DuPont Sorona polymer for a number of products including carpet, where it provides permanent stain protection. DuPont technology and products are incorporated into air filters, water filtration products, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms that make commercial and residential buildings healthier and safer.
Transportation In partnership with BP, DuPont is developing next-generation biofuels that can be produced from agricultural byproducts containing sugar, while promoting sustainable agriculture. We also are developing seeds to increase the production of alternative fuels and automobile efficiency. DuPont technology is enabling the development and commercialization of fuel cell-powered vehicles. Today, fuel cell-powered buses and automobiles are running in demonstration fleets, a prelude to their eventual mass commercialization. DuPont is introducing new grades of DuPont Hytrel thermoplastic elastomer made with renewable resources for use in a range of automotive parts. DuPont Spallshield is used to create automotive sunroofs that protect passengers more effectively and reduce weight by up to 30%. DuPont Performance Coatings offers low-voc emission automotive coatings and is developing finishes based on renewable resources. DuPont Kevlar fiber provides durability to automotive tires, protects soldiers and combat vehicles, and makes cars and airplanes stronger, lighter, and more fuel efficient. DuPont has committed to a three-year, $100 million global expansion for DuPont Nomex, a flame-resistant fiber. Used as lightweight structural support, Nomex helps substantially improve the performance and safety of most commercial aircraft. DuPont Safety Resources is a world-class consultancy that has helped more than 1,600 clients reduce workplace injury rates. Customers include companies in the aerospace, transportation, energy, and health care industries. DuPont has identified and is now testing new proprietary refrigerants to reduce their global warming potential in future automotive air conditioning systems. DaimlerChrysler reduced clearcoat air emissions by 25% at its Dodge Durango plant in Delaware by using SuperSolids technology developed by DuPont.
2015 Sustainability Goals: Reducing DuPont s Footprint While we have made progress in reducing our environmental footprint, we recognize we have more to do. At DuPont, The Goal Is Zero. Guided by our core values, reducing our footprint will always be a priority. Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Since 1990, DuPont has reduced our global greenhouse gas emissions measured as CO 2 equivalents by 72%. By 2015, we will further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions at least 15% from a base year of Water Conservation: DuPont commits to reducing water consumption by at least 30% over the next ten years at our global sites that are located where the renewable freshwater supply is either scarce or stressed as determined by the United Nations analysis of river basins globally. For all other sites, DuPont will hold water consumption flat on an absolute basis through the year 2015, offsetting any increased demand from production volume growth through conservation, reuse and recycle practices. Air Carcinogens: Since 1990, DuPont has reduced our global air carcinogen emissions by 92%, well beyond legal requirements. By 2015, we will further reduce our air carcinogen emissions at least 50% from a base year of This will bring our total reductions since 1990 to 96%. Independent Verification: By 2015, DuPont will ensure that 100% of our global manufacturing sites have successfully completed an independent third-party verification of the effectiveness of their environmental management goals and systems. We will make this information publicly available and communicate it to our local communities. Fleet Fuel Efficiency: Effective immediately, DuPont will introduce fleet vehicles that represent the leading technologies for fuel efficiency and fossil fuel alternatives. By 2015, we will ensure that 100% of our off-site fleet of cars and light trucks meet these criteria. We will continue to ensure these vehicles are safe as well as fuel efficient, and we will track and report on our fuel efficiency improvements.
Recognition for the progress we have made As our journey to sustainable growth continues, our progress in delivering safer and environmentally improved solutions has been recognized by a number of external groups. We appreciate this recognition, though we know we have more work to do. What matters most is what happens in the marketplace and the world as a result of our actions, and our commitment is to make further progress in the years ahead.
