3 Delineation - improvements needed in the coming RBMPs Too many water bodies, too fragmented information in the plans Focus on reducing the number of water bodies Some rivers not adequately delineated according to catchments New delineation compensating this Coastal waters small water bodies delineated too close to point sources/outlets New guidelines focusing on which monitoring stations might be used for classification of water bodies Coastal waterbodies too divided included smaller thresholds, bays and straits IMR provides a new typology Winther 2018, basis for updated delineation for coastal waters

7 Typology - challenges Lack of factors describing hydrology/morphology in rivers sufficient to establish reference conditions for biology Ongoing project to see if the river typology might be expanded to include morphological elements like: Substrate/slope Deliverance in 2018
8 Model for assessing acidification in lakes grouping of lakes The country is divided in squares of 12 x 12 km 2 Status is modelled for each square (MAGIC, monitoring data, soil data, deposition, catchment charactersistics) All lakes with in a square are grouped as one Only used in lakes with no or few monitoring data Lakes which differ in typology might be excluded
9 Some thougts.. grouping of river water bodies based on catchment models Catchment models for hydrology seen in relation to GISinformation on geology (soil, bogs, precipiation, etc) and pressures (diffuse sources, point sources, soil, dams, regulation, roads etc.) Assessment of status based on GIS-analysis, calibrated by monitoring data Would like share thougts, ideas and results for grouping with the other Nordic countries

11 Challenges regarding classification Classification system regarded scientific not many questions towards the system in itself But, often little monitoring data, expert judgement Sometimes based on data from monitoring of effluents, relatively close to the source not representative for the water body Some water bodies are too small, narrowed in around outlets This causes difficulties when handling licensing Refusals of licenses/expansions and imposed monitoring/measures have been appealed from the sectors due to disagreement of classification and Objectives already obtained (GEP or if the measures are directed at elements not part of the classification system)
12 Oslofjorden Many point sources Some sources have significant impact in some areas of the wb, but the whole water body is classified according these pressures Eksempel: Hurum/ Chemring Nobel
13 Lillebukt ved Stjernøya i Finnmark Sibelco Nordic: Seafill from mining activity Status probably strongly affected by the seafill
14 Exemptions RBMP only exemption in regulated rivers There is ongoing dialogue on exemptions for industrial sites/contaminated areas.
