1 California Green Business Program Checklist preview Program: SFO Airport Sector: Office/Retail Date: 09 May 2017 General General (5 Required + 0 Optional measures required) 1. Attend annual tenant meeting to stay current on SFO's sustainability programs and related energy, water, waste and pollution prevention requirements. 2. Inform your customers about what you are doing to be green. Examples: Post a list of your green accomplishments, train your staff to talk about sustainability, highlight your green efforts on your website, and/or offer tours that highlight sustainability. 3. Pay the Green Business Program fee. Ask your Green Business Coordinator for the link to payment page. 4. Train new employees on green business procedures and practices implemented by your business through your company's employee handbook. 5. Adopt a written environmentally preferable (or green) purchasing policy. Ask your Green Business Coordinator for templates. 1. Establish a 'green team' that can help guide efforts to green your business. Waste Environmentally preferable purchasing (6 Required + 0 Optional measures required) Green Business Printable Checklist 1

If purchasing janitorial papers for customers, provide toilet paper and tissues with a minimum of 20% postconsumer waste (PCW) recycled content and paper towels with a minimum of 40% PCW recycled content. 2. Use only compostable or recyclable take out food service ware and ensure compliance with the City's Food Service Waste Reduction ordinance 3. Print marketing materials on paper containing a minimum of 50% post consumer waste recycled content, recommended 100%. 4. Use a corrugated or recyclable board in place of foam core boards. 5. Purchase letterhead, envelopes and business cards with minimum 50% post consumer waste. 6. Purchase copy, computer and fax paper with minimum 50% post consumer waste (recommended 100%). 1. Reuse remodeling/construction materials: cabinets, fixtures, ceramic and ceiling tiles, drywall, insulation, interior paneling, composite lumber/wood, roofing, concrete, etc. 2. Purchase large format or plotter paper with a minimum 30% recycled content, or higher recycled content if available. 3. Purchase or obtain previously used furniture, supplies or materials (freecycle.org, Craigs List). 4. Purchase office/copier paper with 100% post consumer waste. Source reduction (8 Required + 0 Optional measures required) 1. Eliminate the use of plastic bags at point of sale. If you use paper bags, use a minimum of 40% post consumer waste. 3 2. Reduce number of trash/compost/recycle bin liners by reusing bags or having unlined bins. If lining compost bins, use BPI certified bags. 3. Eliminate individual bottles of water for employees and guests. 4. In the employee cafeteria, kitchen or break room, replace disposables with permanent dishware and use bulk items (snacks, condiments, salt/pepper, etc.). 5. Reduce printing of s, attachments and documents. 6. Eliminate the use of polystyrene, such as Styrofoam, in beverages and food service ware. 7. Donate, sell, or exchange unwanted but usable items (furniture, supplies, electronics, office supplies, etc.). Document donations and sales of materials. Use or for help in identifying reuse opportunities. 8. Make two sided printing and copying standard practice in your business (set printers and copiers to default to duplex printing). Make single-sided the exception instead of the rule. 1. Use paperless receipt options e.g. Square or Paypal Here. 2. Reduce junk mail. See for tips. 3. Buy products in bulk or that are concentrated, durable, repairable, and/or recyclable, making sure that you need all you are ordering. 4. Reuse paper or plastic packaging materials in your own shipments. 5. Retailers: Offer incentives for customers who bring their own reusable bags, coffee mugs, etc. (or disincentives such as charging fees for bags). Utilize clearly labeled recycle bins (and compost bins where approp) co-located next to all trash receptacles in all areas that generate waste and recycling: break rooms, bathrooms, offices, meeting rooms, copy rooms, lobby areas, and cubicles. 2. Compost all organics including food and yard discards, soiled paper products, and compostable food containers. 3. Recycle all paper, glass, metal, cardboard and plastics accepted in your area. 4. Collect items that are prohibited from the garbage (batteries, CFLs, cellphones and other electronics, etc.) and institute a program for their safe disposal. 1. Designate a recycling coordinator(s) to take responsibility for monitoring/maintaining proper waste diversion and conducting ongoing education. 2. Donate excess edible food (ex. SF Food Bank or Energy Energy Conservation (4 Required + 0 Optional measures required) 1. Install programmable thermostat(s) and properly set cooling to 74 F and heating to 68 F. Program the thermostats for unoccupied hours when the facility is closed with cooling set at 90 F and heating at 55 F. 2. Set refrigerator temperature between 38ºF and 41ºF and freezer between 10º F and 20ºF. 3. Use ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerators (those over 10 years old should be replaced). 4. Use ENERGY STAR office equipment and enable energy saving features. Green Business Printable Checklist 4
5 1. Institute a policy that all electronic devices, lighting and room cooling units be turned off when not in use and use light switch reminders to remind staff to turn off the same. Energy management (1 Required + 0 Optional measures required) 1. If you pay your energy bill, track monthly energy use using a spreadsheet or online tool (check with your utility provider or try Energy Star's Portfolio Manager). Lighting (4 Required + 0 Optional measures required) DESCRIPTION YES NO N/A Post 1. Replace non-dimming incandescent bulbs with LEDs. 2. Replace high wattage MR-16 halogen lamps with LEDs. 3. Use energy efficient exit signs, such as LEDs. 4. Replace all T-12 fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient T-8 or T-5 fixtures with electronic ballasts or other equivalent efficacy lighting. 1. Use lighting controls such as dual technology occupancy sensors, bypass/delay timers, photocells or time clocks. 6 1. Install low flow aerators with flow rates not to exceed 0.5 gpm on lavatory sinks. 2. Replace all urinals flushing at greater than 1.0 gallon with high efficiency urinals, flushing at less than 0.5 gallons, or waterless urinals. Your water utility may have a rebate program for high efficiency urinals. 3. Retrofit toilets flushing at higher than 1.6 gallons with high efficiency toilets (1.28 gallons or less per flush). Your water utility may have a rebate program for high efficiency toilets. 4. Install aerators on kitchen sinks (except fill sinks) and showerheads that do not exceed flow rates of 1.5 gpm. 1. Post signs in the kitchen to encourage water conservation and to report leaks. Water management (2 Required + 0 Optional measures required) 1. Regularly check for and repair all leaks in your facility (toilet leaks can be detected in tank toilets with leak detecting tablets, which may be available from your local water provider, or use food coloring). 2. Track monthly water use and monitor bills for leaks. Pollution Clean air (3 Required + 0 Optional measures required) 1. Help employees rideshare by posting commuter ride sign-up sheets and providing other commuter incentive programs (e.g., rideshare incentive programs, guaranteed ride home in emergency situations, etc.) available at Green Business Printable Checklist 6
7 2. Set-up a Commuter Benefits Program to enable employees to use pre-tax deduction under IRS code 132(f) for transit, vanpool or biking costs (see website in Help Button). 3. Join the Air Districts Spare the Air program and notify employees and customers of Spare the Air days Complete a CO2 or eco-footprint calculator to determine your own greenhouse gas emissions. 2. Convert company vehicles to low emission vehicles (electric, hybrid, natural gas or alternative fuels). 3. Provide secure bicycle storage for staff and customers. Environmentally preferable purchasing (3 Required + 0 Optional measures required) DESCRIPTION 1. Purchase EPEAT certified ( computers, laptops and monitors. YES NO N/A Post 2. Use refilled or remanufactured laser and copier toner cartridges. 3. Use unbleached and/or chlorine-free paper products (copy paper, paper towels, napkins, coffee filters, etc.). 1. Safely dispose of unwanted or old chemicals including: unused paint, cleaning chemicals, solvents, etc. Safe disposal means taking the hazardous waste to your local hazardous waste facility, or having a licensed hauler pick up the hazardous waste. 2. Properly store and recycle Universal Wastes as required by law. Designate a covered storage area for spent Universal Wastes, posting a sign and notifying employees of this area. 3. Eliminate the use of chemical and aerosolized air fresheners/deodorizers. To freshen air, open windows or adjust fan speed in restrooms and kitchens. 4. Contract with a PCO certified to practice Integrated Pest Management or request your PCO to implement an IPM Program. Use SF Approved ( pesticides only. 5. Eliminate the routine use of all disinfectants and sanitizers, unless needed to comply with Environmental Health. 6. Use low toxic cleaning products in non-aerosol containers such as Green Seal certified (greenseal.org), EWG.org/skindeep, Safer Choice (epa.gov/saferchoice), SF Approved (sfapproved.org), or those with a GoodGuide rating of 8.1 or more (goodguide.com). 7. When recycling electronic equipment, take to a certified "e-steward" for responsible recycling ( 8. Recycle used ink jet cartridges. 9. Recycle used copier toner cartridges. 1. When remodeling, use natural or low emissions building materials, carpets, or furniture. 2. Buy recycled paint and low VOC products when available (paint, paint removal products, etc.). 3.
