1 IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC), c/o the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources of Thailand 9 th Floor, the Government Complex Building B, 120 Chaengwattana Road, Lak Si, Bangkok 10210, Thailand - fax: +66 (0) contact phone: +66 (0) w.zhu@unesco.org Concept note (Draft v.4, on 13 July 2016) Third WESTPAC Training Workshop on Research and Monitoring of the Ecological Impacts of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reef Ecosystems, August 2016, Phuket, Thailand This third regional training workshop is a follow-up to the first one (19-21 January 2015, Phuket, Thailand) and the second one (26-28 August 2015, Phuket, Thailand). 1. Background The first workshop (19-21 January 2015, Phuket, Thailand) attracted immense interests in the region with a total of 42 experts from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, United States of America, and Vietnam. The participants exchanged information on existing and proposed ocean acidification monitoring and research approaches, methods, and techniques at global, regional, and national levels. Moreover, all participants stressed the importance of the development, building on existing coral reef monitoring initiatives, of a joint long-term monitoring program on the impacts of ocean acidification on coral reefs in the region. To this end, several pilot sites were identified upon strong interests and recommendations received, as a starting point for developing a regional ocean acidification observing network, with a view to analyzing the current monitoring capacity, identifying common monitoring methods, and further considering to develop a set of consistent, comparable and cost-effective Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all pilot sites. While these efforts are focused on the establishment of a regional ocean acidification observing network, we are ideally striving for consistency and comparability as part of the Global Ocean Acidification - Observing Network (GOA-ON). In light of the conclusions reached at the first workshop, the second training workshop (26-28 August 2015, Phuket, Thailand) aimed to assist the selected pilot sites to develop a set of Standard Operating Procedures for monitoring the ecological impacts of ocean acidification on coral reef ecosystems, while building upon their existing reef monitoring systems/capacity. A total of 41 participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, United States of America, and Vietnam attended the workshop. Expert lectures were provided on carbonate chemistry and laboratory analysis, monitoring protocols and techniques related to biological parameters, bio-erosion, accretion and calcification, and biodiversity. With reference to existing SOPs, the workshop finally decided to establish four Working Groups towards the development of regionally specific SOPs, respectively on Total Alkalinity, Spectrophotometric ph, Biology, and Carbonate Collection and Handling. Please refer to annex 1 for the four WG SOPs. 2. Objectives The third regional workshop will review and test the draft SOPs through expert discussions, and hands-on practical demonstrations either in field or laboratory, in order to finalize the regional SOPs for monitoring the ecological impacts of ocean acidification on coral reef ecosystems. In addition, latest development on GOA-ON and other OA related activities will be briefed at the workshop. Experts from pilot sites are also required to report on their progress since the 2 nd workshop and tentative plans for implementation of the pilot sites during the next intersessional period.

2 Conduct of the workshop The first day will consist of reports on the latest developments on ocean acidification related research, activities and programs; and briefs on the draft SOPs. On second day, all trainees will be divided into two groups, respectively on biological and chemical monitoring for hands-on exercises (details to be further developed); On third day, participants will report on their progress made since the 2 nd workshop and tentative plans for the next intersessional period. Most participants to be invited will be from among the participants in the first and second workshops, particularly those who are conducting regular monitoring in their selected pilot sites. Preferably two will be invited from each site, one on biological and another on chemical aspects. Other participants who expressed interest over the last intersessional period to join the network or develop collaborations, will also be invited. /

3 - 3 - Annex 1: ( some conclusions at the 2 nd workshop) Total Alkalinity Working Group This WG shall initiate discussions on regional TA measurement capacity and associated equipment, review existing SOPs, and come up with a revised procedure serving regional requirements. The draft procedure shall be further tested at PMBC. The WG will be led by Diego-McGlone and Khokiattiwong with Adrienne Sutton, Andrew Dickson, Muhammad Lukman, and Sayedur Rahman Chowdhury as WG members. Spectrophotometric ph Working Group This WG shall review existing SOPs, and come up with a revised procedure serving regional requirements. The draft procedure shall be further tested at PMBC. The WG will be led by Khokiattiwong and Diego-McGlone with Adrienne Sutton, Andrew Dickson, Muhammad Lukman, and Sayedur Rahman Chowdhury as WG members. Biology Working Group The draft procedure for biology shall be reviewed and revised to reach common understanding for monitoring biological parameters as soon as possible. This Working Group will be led by Rusty Brainard, Chavanich and Aileen Tan Shau Hwai with Shahadat Hossain, Patrick Cabaitan and Vo Si Tuan as WG members. Carbonate Collection and Handling SOP Working Group This Working Group will be led by Diego-McGlone with Khokiattiwong, Chip Young, and Andrew Dickson as WG members.
