1 Dept. of Mechanical Engineering Technology (MCET) Course Code (Revamped) Course Title Course Description 1 ENGT101 Engineering Drafting This course is an introduction to technical drawing and computer-aided drafting. The instructional program involves the use of drafting instruments, sketching, lettering, geometric constructions, multiview projections, pictorial drawings, dimensioning, surface development and piping drawings. Internationally recognized drafting standards and conventions are applied throughout the course. The course prepares the students to read and interpret technical drawings and construct engineering drawings by using CAD software. 2 ENGT201 Industrial Safety 3 MCET101 Plant Maintenance This course will cover in detail with industrial safety practices and concepts involving safety in the workplace and their environments mainly in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical and Industrial management sector. The purpose of this course is to provide students an insight of safer workplace. The idea is to develop their skills in hazard recognitions, PPE, risk management and MSDS. Topics include fire extinguishers, ventilation and employer safety responsibilities, LOTO, safe use of ladders, scaffolds, symbol, sign, handling chemicals, working with Mechanical and Electrical equipment and accident prevention. It introduce students the role of human behaviour in safety. Similarly, during the progress of the course, students will be known to the different industrial safety manual, laws, regulations and standards affecting safety. This course introduces the student to advanced knowledge of mechanical maintenance,functions and techniques,including preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance,non-destructive testing, troubleshooting and fault diagnosis,lubrication, bearing types, sealing,levelling,alignment and installation of mechanical equipment s, maintenance of power plants,pump stations,hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

2 4 MCET102 Mechanical Measurements 5 MCET103 Machining Processes I This course enables the student technicians to gain knowledge and develop their skills using measuring tools and equipment utilizing both the English and S.I. unit systems. The student will learn to measure with rules, tapes, callipers, verniers, micrometers gauges, indicators, sine bar and universal protractor. The course is supported by laboratory experiments. This course provides the student with an understanding of basic machine shop processes. It deals with use of cutting tools and procedures, bandsaw, contour bandsaw, reamers and taps, lathe machines, drilling machines, shaping machines, milling and grinding machines. The course is supported by workshop training to study the construction and verification of characteristics of these workshop machines, procedures and their operations in typical machining exercises. Safe working practices will be stressed during all laboratory activities. 6 MCET104 Materials Technology 7 MCET105 Applied Statics This course introduces the principles of manufacture of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys, thermal insulating, and corrosive resisting materials. The course covers the basics of physical metallurgy, powder metallurgy, shaping, forming, casting, plastic molding, heat treatment processes and joining techniques of industrial materials. Laboratory applications focus on physical microstructure examination of engineering materials. The student receives appropriate practical experience in carrying out heat treatments and the study of their effects on the material, microstructures and mechanical properties. This course deals with the fundamental concepts and principles of applied mechanics. It covers force components, moments and couples, and computation of the resultant of coplanar system of forces. It also considers the equilibrium of a particle & rigid body, analysis trusses, frames and machines. It further considers problems related to centroid, centre of gravity& friction. The course also introduces the kinematics of rectilinear and curvilinear motion of particles and rigid bodies, and simple harmonic motion.

3 8 MCET201 Mechanical Drafting This course is designed to prepare the students to create and interpret working drawings. Topics covered include representation of threaded and non-threaded fasteners, gears, springs, rivets and welded joints. Application of dimensional and geometric tolerances, surface roughness symbols in production drawings is covered. Students are also introduced to the basic concepts of 3D modelling. The media of application varied from standard drafting instruments to the state of the art in computer aided design and drafting tools. 9 MCET211 Applied Thermodynamics This course starts with defining renewable and non-renewable energy sources, types and its applications. It introduces the student to the basic concepts of thermodynamics including pure substance, ideal gas, system, boundary and surrounding. The concepts of the Zeroth, First and Second Law of thermodynamics are introduced. It also discusses thermal engineering system including, heat engines, refrigeration. Students will study the analysis of the thermal systems by applying first and second law of thermodynamics. Moreover, they studied different types of power systems and their components, such as steam power cycles and gas power cycles and simple refrigeration cycle. Also, they will utilize the Thermo-fluids Test ( software ) to calculate the efficiency of different types of power cycle systems, the coefficient of performance of vapour compression refrigeration cycle and derive the phase diagram of the cycles. 10 MCET212 Fluid Machines The course provides students with an understanding fluid at rest, in motion and interactive forces between fluids and bodies. The course includes applications of fluid mechanics in pipelines and fluid machines such as pumps, turbines and an introduction to compressible fluid machines. The course is also supported by laboratory activities.

4 11 MCET213 Equipment Maintenance 12 MCET214 Heat Exchangers 13 MCET217 Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology This course is designed to equip, and enable the students as mechanical maintenance technicians through the skilled application of engineering knowledge. It provides a comprehensive understanding of predictive maintenance strategy in newly established state-of-the art lab to achieve high plant availability and optimize on product quality. The course covers the basic maintenance techniques such as condition monitoring, vibration analysis, alignment and rotor balancing to eliminate mechanical breakdowns, technical disruptions and equipment failure in a production environment. Hands-on practice for the replacement of dynamic and mechanical seals is performed. The course also covers the applications, troubleshooting and maintenance of different mechanical components and equipment such as valves, pumps, compressors, couplings and gear reducers including fault diagnosis, inspection, dismantling, repair and reassembly. The course is supported by practical training and workshop activities. This course introduces the student technician to the theory of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation), heat transmission during evaporation and condensation in heat exchangers; descriptions of heat exchanger type and performance (flow arrangements, logarithmic mean temperature difference and effectiveness), descriptions of some heat exchange applications such as boilers and evaporators, principles of desalination and solar energy applications are included. Laboratory experiments will support the course. The course is designed to provide student technician with theoretical and practical skills in refrigeration and air conditioning. The course content includes refrigeration principles covering topics of simple and actual vapor-compression cycles, refrigerants, multi-pressures, multi-stage & cascade, and theory and operation of refrigeration components. Air conditioning principles covers the topic of psychrometry, psychrometric processes, and basic load estimations. Fundamental maintenance services and procedures are also included. This course is supported by laboratory exercises.

5 14 MCET219 Hydraulics and Pneumatics Technology 15 MCET221 Machining Processes II This course is directed to study the design, principal of operation and calculation of fluid power systems (hydraulic and pneumatic). In addition, a special attention will be paid to cover the construction, troubleshooting and maintenance of fluid power systems and their industrial applications. Also, the course will cover a good theoretical base of fluid power systems which enables the further study analysis of the static and dynamic performance of different elements of fluid power systems. Together with the theoretical study, the course includes the different case studies of typical industrial circuits. Laboratory sessions involving the use of computers for simulation and analysis of different systems and individual elements performance. This course covers advanced machining processes. It deals with a wide range of practical and theoretical work in the area of metal cutting and includes advanced machining operations. 16 MCET222 Applied Strength of Materials This course deals with the principles of strength, stresses and strains. Problemsolving skills are developed in areas of simple axial stresses, shear stress, stresses in beams, stresses in shafts, impact stresses, combined stresses and buckling of columns. Laboratory experiments cover the area of materials testing; including tension, compression, torsion, bending, shear, impact and hardness. 17 MCET223 CAD/ CAM Technology This course provides students training in CAD/CAM software and also in robotic applications. This course introduces the practical applications of CNC machines including programming and operation. Part geometry and the machine codes are created and generated using the CAD/CAM software. Interactive Computer integrated Manufacturing is introduced to enhance the knowledge and skills in CAD/CAM. Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to use CAD/CAM software to create 2D/3D models and for tool path generation and proper procedure for design and manufacturing

6 18 MCET224 Inspection and Quality Control This is an overview course on industrial inspection and quality control methods for manufactured parts. The course covers topics on inspection procedures, the use of standards, specifications, sampling techniques, statistical quality control (SQC), and the construction of the X - and R - control charts. Laboratory activities cover inspection techniques for linear and geometrical tolerances like flatness, squareness, roundness, and the use of inspection gauges and comparators. Modern inspection techniques are introduced and the students are given hands-on experience on co-ordinate measuring machine, profile projector, toolmaker's microscope and high speed motion analysis. Application of continuous improvement to the solutions of manufacturing problems is also introduced. 19 MCET225 Tool Design 20 MCET226 Welding Technology This course introduces the student to the design of machine tools. It introduces the students to the design process, concepts of factor of safety, and stress concentration. It concentrates on the design of machine tool elements and selection of standard mechanical components. Design of Jigs and fixtures is also introduced. Design exercises and mini projects are to be conducted during the course This course is designed to give the student the knowledge and skill in welding technology and weld testing techniques to enable him to function effectively in industry. Subjects covered include shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), oxyacetylene welding/cutting (OAW), resistance welding, soldering & brazing and specialized air-plasma cutting process. Principles and theory of gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), semi-automatic process i.e. gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and destructive & non-destructive weld testing techniques are covered together with joint design and welding specification sheets. Safe working practices are stressed throughout the program. All theory is dealt with from first principles and supported by workshop instructions and practices.

It covers metalworking tools and machines used within the sheet metal practices. The topics covered include formability of metals, classification, forming, joining, blueprint and processing of sheet metal. It further focuses on development of patterns, products and producing models, layouts and possible defects in sheet metal forming. This course covers the fundamentals of kinematics and dynamics of particles and planar rigid bodies. The accelerated motion is analyzed using equation of motion with different coordinate systems. Drawing free-body diagrams as well as kinetic diagrams are strongly emphasized throughout the course. Work and energy principle and impulse and momentum principle are introduced and used extensively in the analysis of motion for both particles and rigid bodies. This course deals with different types of forces and stresses; analysis of statically loaded structures; concept of stress and strain; generalized Hooke's law; axially loaded members; direct and torsional shear stresses; bending and shear of beams; stresses in thin-walled pressure vessels; combined loadings; stress/strain transformation; design of beams and shaft This course provides the student with theoretical and problem solving skills in engineering thermodynamics applicable to processes and cycles. The course provides knowledge about thermodynamic properties of substances, principles of system, boundary and surrounding, the first and second laws of thermodynamics, power and refrigeration cycles, application of thermal engineering processes in equipment. This course is supported by tutorials. This course introduces the student to the Design process, Design for strength and related concepts of factor of safety, stress concentration and theories of failure. It also covers design of shafts, keys, mechanical joints, and selection of some standard mechanical components e.g. V-belts,chain, antifriction bearings This course is intended to cover the synthesis of linkages and mechanisms (velocity, acceleration, forces and torque), gear train systems, cams-followers, gyroscope and flywheel. It also introduces stability, balancing and vibration analysis of different mechanical systems.

8 27 MCET306 Applied Fluid Mechanics 28 MCET307 3D Modelling 29 MCET401 Heat Transfer This course introduces the student to definition and properties of fluid and the basic knowledge of statics and kinematics of fluid. Basic fluid dynamic equations of continuity, energy and momentum, with applications to different flow situations and flow measurement. The course will cover laminar and turbulent flow in pipes, fluid dynamics and introduction to turbo machinery. MCET 307 (3D modelling) is an introduction to SolidWorks and presents fundamental principles towards feature based parametric modelling and design. Emphasis will be on using basic tools towards the creations of parts, assemblies, and drawings. The course covers the three modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. One dimensional steady state conduction through different shapes and free and forced convection heat transfer in both internal and external geometries and under laminar and turbulent flow regimes are introduced. unsteady state heat conduction. Radiation heat transfer between surfaces and shape factor are covered. Various applications like heat exchangers, heat transfer from extended surfaces and condensation on surfaces are also included in this course. This course is supported by laboratory experiments and tutorials. 30 MCET402 Manufacturing Processes 31 MCET403 Machine Design II This course includes quantitative and qualitative study of manufacturing process for metals, plastics and ceramics including machining, forming, plastics, welding and casting. The course emphasizes on process selection for optimum design and automation with inspection and quality control. Throughout the course quality, strength, and economics of manufacturing process are evaluated. This course is a continuation of MCET 304 (Machine Design I). Computational methods in engineering design, Couplings, Screws and fasteners, Spring design, Gears, Clutches and brakes

9 32 MCET404 System Dynamics & Control This course is directed to study the dynamics and equations of motion of mechanical, fluid, electrical and thermal systems. In addition, a special attention will cover the different representation of the systems (e.g. transfer functions, block diagram, signal flow graph and state space). Also, the course explains the characteristic of both open and closed-loop systems according to the effect of basic control actions. Finally, the course discusses the dynamic response (in both time and frequency domains) of different elementary systems. 33 MCET405 Power Plant Engineering 34 MCET411 Computer Integrated Manufacturing 35 MCET412 Production Planning and Control This course stars with defining renewable and non-renewable energy sources, types and its applications This course is designed to provide the students with the understanding and application of thermal engineering and mechanics to different thermo-fluid systems. Types, construction, working principles performance of boilers, turbines, power plants and internal combustion engines are covered. Overall plant performance, load curves and economics of power plants is introduced. This course is supported by TEST Software for numerical analysis. This course provides in depth knowledge of Computer Integrated manufacturing and study of manufacturing planning, integration and implementation of Automation. It enables the students to continually refine their interpersonal skills, creative abilities, and understanding of the design process. This course explores hands on study in the areas of Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. Apart from the key area CAD/CAM and CNC, it includes studies of concurrent Engineering, Group Technology, Computer Aided Process Planning and Flexible Manufacturing systems. This course covers the major areas of production planning and control. It includes quantitative and qualitative material, theoretical and practical perspectives, and thus, bears relevance for business as well as industrial applications. Topics such as fundamentals of planning and control, forecasting, sales and operation planning, master scheduling, inventory management, material requirement planning (MRP), capacity management are covered. A recent development in production activity control is also discussed. Projects are support and reinforce classroom activities.

10 36 MCET413 Energy Conservation and Management Energy and the Environment, Introduction to Renewable energy Equip the student with a solid background in fundamentals of battery systems for electric and hybrid vehicles. To develop problem-solving skills necessary to apply the knowledge in practical applications of battery system (e.g., Lead acid, nickel metal Hybrid, Lithium batteries, Capacitors, fuel cells) in electric and hybrid vehicles. 37 MCET414 Computational Fluid Dynamics 38 MCET421 Turbo Machines This course introduces students to have an understanding about the different types of governing equations for a viscous fluid flows. It also introduces numerical modelling and its role in the field of fluid flow and heat transfer. It enables the students to understand the various discretization methods, solution procedures and turbulence modelling. The course also focuses on creating confidence to solve complex problems in the field of fluid flow and heat transfer using high speed computers. This course is supported by Ansys Research 16.0 software. The course will provide basic knowledge and understanding of the principles of turbo-machines, their construction, way of functioning and the processes that take place in these machines. Furthermore, the course will provide basic skills in problem solving regarding energy balance at component and system level. Also, interaction between the working fluid and the structure by the analysis of the velocity triangles and calculation of the efficiencies and losses are included. In addition, utilization the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics are used to analyse gas turbine engines. Understand the common gas turbine and propulsion systems and be able to determine the applicability and the performance of each.

11 39 MCET422 Refrigeration and HVAC Technology 40 MCET423 Mechanical Vibrations 41 MCET424 Gas Dynamics This course explores the fundamentals of refrigeration, heating, ventilating and airconditioning (HVAC) systems theoretically and practically. The course will discuss refrigeration principles, vapour compression cycle, refrigeration systems, and the conditions for a comfortable and healthy indoor environment, such as physiological considerations, environmental indices, and control of indoor air quality. The course will introduce the analysis of air-conditioning/psychometric processes, and then discuss the estimation of energy to be added to (heating load) or extracted from (cooling load) a space. The course will also discuss different HVAC system components such as air handling units, water chillers, hot water boilers, cooling towers, evaporative condensers, fans and pumps, etc., including the water distribution system, duct design and air distribution method as well as laboratory activities. This course is of basic level. It introduces fundamentals of vibration, free and forced, undamped and damped vibration, vibration of single Degree of Freedom (DoF) system, 2-DoF and multi-dof systems, theory of vibration absorbers and vibration instruments. In this course the student will understand one- and multidegree-of-freedom systems. Natural frequencies and modes of vibrations, resonance, beat phenomenon, effect of damping, applications to practical problems, and methods to avoid excessive vibrations. Lagrange s equations. Vibration is a common phenomenon occurring in a mechanical system. The study of a dedicated course is leading to understand the fundamental and advanced concepts of mechanical vibrations for engineers and designers In this course the student will understand one- and multi-degree-of-freedom systems.
