Summary for Licensees From waste to valuable resources The VRS Value Recovery System embodies the modern disposal of organic wet waste. The realization that disposal in centralised major installations is no longer up-to-date forms the basis for new disposal methods: The recycling of wet waste processed at it s point of origin. This form of recycling is both economically and ecologically sound. Conventional disposal methods such as use as pig feed will be restricted, or even made impossible by legislation. So what could be more practical than processing peelings and food remnants, or the waste that arises while filleting fish, at the point of origin? The idea and its realisation originate from Herbert A. Strittmatter, a Swiss Citizen, with many years of experience in the raw material and recycling sector. VRS Value Recovery Systems
The concept, with presentation of the initial position and the problems involved Organic Wet Waste Peelings and Food Waste Fish Waste Wet organi are not throw-away articles! Although they spoil quickly, they also contain valuable nutrients, such as protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and trace elements. From an ecological standpoint, it makes little sense to burn or ferment them. In addition, the constraints on feeding these materials to livestock are being tightened more and more. The VRS Recycling System is based on ecological processing units installed at the user s location. The resulting dried resources can be processed further before being returned to the consumption cycle as resources. Disposal of wet waste is becoming increasingly problematic. There are many reasons for this: The use as feed for livestock is being increasingly limited due to the danger of spreading animal diseases and cannibalism issues, as well as to achieve improvements in the meat quality. The shredding and compacting of food remnants overloads the sewage plants with such quantities of fibres and fats 2
that local authorities in many places have prohibited this kind of processing. 3. The incineration of resource materials makes little sense either from an ecological or from an ethical viewpoint. 4. The environmental pollution produced by the transportation of wet wastes with an average water content of 80% and more can no longer be accepted from an ecological viewpoint. So what can be done with organic wet waste? On-site processing with VRS machines - Example with 100 tons of Food Waste per year. There are many advantages : The state of freshness is guaranteed. The refrigeration of wet waste is not necessary, thereby saving energy. The transport costs are considerably reduced. The dry product with a moisture content of approx. 10% is significantly less voluminous. The quantity to be transported is reduced from 100 tons to approx tons, depending on the water content of the wet waste. No container exchange from outside is necessary, therefore no contamination risk. The wet waste is crushed in the agitating-cutting mechanism during the drying phase. The final product is sterile and can be used for various purposes. 3
From Waste to.. Food Waste Fish by-products Valuables. Feed Fertilizer Water 4
End Products from Food Waste to Fertilizer from Fish Waste to Valuables from Peelings to Essential Oil 5
Summary There are no more disposal costs for the operations. The saved costs could be used for the financing of a VRS machine. Depending on the operation, renting, leasing or buying could be the best option. Operations with correspondingly high disposal costs could amortize a VRS machine within 1 ½ to 2 ½ years only. The danger of disease is removed, as "container tourism" is eliminated. Through immediate processing, no refrigeration of the waste is necessary at the point of origin. The transport volume is reduced by approximately 80% (no water transport). Reduction of environmental pollution through an 80% reduction in CO2 and Nox emissions. The final products can be recycled. Imports of animal feed and fertilizer are correspondingly reduced. Additional jobs are created. The waste is converted into valuable final products. 6
