5 STATUS OF NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT WITHIN THE STATE OF OHIO Ohio s Nutrient Reduction Strategy Joint effort by Ohio EPA, Department of Ag and ODNR Submitted to Feds in 2013 assessment of current efforts to reduce the negative impacts on Ohio s water resources Nutrient Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Diverse make-up of stakeholders Meetings since the Spring of 13 with a 15 target date Aimed at developing State surface water quality standards for nutrients

6 IT S NOT A QUESTION OF IF, BUT RATHER WHEN will our regional POTWs be required to treat to some reduced levels of Phosphorus and Nitrogen, especially in light of the recent Toledo water quality issue! Ohio EPA preaching shared responsibility for Nutrient Management with recent rumblings of statewide POTW Optimization Studies for nutrient reduction. Considering the issues and challenges at hand, it would behoove all POTWs to begin thinking about upgrades or process conversions to BNR.

There are few filaments present including filaments with attached growth indicating possible low F/M conditions. There is a moderate amount of straggler floc throughout sample. Sludge age appears to be a younger to medium age. 39 DENITRIFICATION VS PHOSPHORUS REMOVAL Where Phosphorus is removed exclusively via the solid stream, Nitrogen can only be removed as a gas to the atmosphere. Denitrification is anaerobic biological reduction of nitrate-nitrogen causing the removal of Nitrogen as a gas from the system.

40 BNR IS OUR GENERATION S ACTIVATED SLUDGE Be ready for it in your NPDES permit horizon Be prepared to see it within industry educational curriculum and certification content Accept the challenge to advance your knowledge and launch our industry into the next eon As most things, Slo-Hio is a bit behind the left and right coasts as well as environmentally sensitive regions

41 Profile your system on a regular basis Biological reactors are dynamic creatures that need to be monitored. Profile your system regularly. It will define your treatment systems habits and increase operator education and awareness.

43 Identify and quantify all sources of P & N inside and outside the gates Perform collection system surveys, side stream profiles, and analyze RAW water supplies to better understand sources and loadings

44 Consider air distribution within the initial section of the Aerobic Zones Ortho-P uptake is promoted rapidly with adequate air supply inside the first 1/3 of the Aerobic Zone (up to 75%).

46 Consider the HRTs of both Anaerobic and Aerobic Zones Insufficient HRTs within an Anaerobic zone will hamper Bio P treatment through a time deficiency for VFA uptake/ortho-p release. Excessive HRTs within an Aerobic Zone will affect Bio P treatment through the promotion of Cell Lysis/Digestion and its subsequent Ortho-P release.

47 Protect the integrity of the Anaerobic Zone Insufficient time and excessive oxygen and nitrates will hamper the zone s effectiveness. Eliminate and/or minimize sources of DO and NO3 in the system. i.e. pre-aeration, screw pumps, free fall over weirs or gates, internal recycles, RAS flow, aggressive turbulence and mixing, backflows
