17 CO2 FOOTPRINT (1) An investigation was executed to come to grounded number for CO2 footprint for membrane filtration and DE filtration of beer For the calculation of CO2 footprint the following directive of the British Standards Organization BSI was used Guide to PAS2050: How to asses the carbon foot print of goods and services The CO2 footprint is calculated over the whole supply chain, so also energy consumption in the production and shipping of DE and membranes is taken into account The energy consumption in making membranes has been taken from the Pentair factory in Enschede PENTAIR The role of a beer membrane filter in an environmental friendly brewery 17

21 WATER CONSUMPTION DE Filtration Water in a DE filter is used for flushing out the DE, cleaning and sterilization Consumption depends on run volumes Typical consumption is hl/hl Membrane Filtration Water in a BMF is used for periodical back flushing with cold caustic and regeneration of the membranes Consumption depends on achieved run volumes Typical consumption is 0.2 hl/hl, lower for beers produced with adjuncts and use of extra enzymes PENTAIR The role of a beer membrane filter in an environmental friendly brewery 21
22 SOLID WASTE STREAM Typical solid waste stream of a brewery is 0.8 kg/hl DE is responsible for 50% being 0.4 kg/hl For a brewery with an annual output of 1,000,000 HL it means the following: DE Filter: 400,000 kg/yr BMF: 180 kg/yr(replacement of membranes) PENTAIR The role of a beer membrane filter in an environmental friendly brewery 22
