2 SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVES TV4NEWOOD ThermoVacuum: new process For New generation of thermally modified Wood is an european project funded by CIP-Eco-Innovation programme through the 2012 call of proposal. The project main objective is to penetrate european market with thermally modified wood under vacuum, realized by innovative process Thermovacuum. Thermovacuum is an innovative and environmentally friendly process to produce a new generation of high added-value Thermally Modified Vacuum Wood (TVW) having outstanding properties of resistance and durability.

3 SUMMARY AND OBJECTIVES The project objectives are: To penetrate the market of thermally modified wood by offering a high quality, ecological and convenient solution; To encourage the substitution of imported tropical timber, with locally produced wood with enhanced properties, preventing the over-exploitation of valuable resources and reducing significantly the adverse environmental impacts of transport of timber over long distances and the related economic costs.

4 Main outputs and expected results Installation of at least 10 plants for the production of TVW in 8 European countries Reduction by at least 50% of process energy consumption versus / compared to BAT Reduction of water use during the cooling step in the production process and of water vapour emission in the air; CO2 reduction of over 700 tons related to the reduced import of tropical timber equivalent to the production with local woods enhanced through the vacuum heat treatment Thermovacuum;

5 Main outputs and expected results Lower costs of the production process compared to the state of the art (reduction of 40-60% of the production cost per m3 of treated wood) Enhancement of "poorer" species of local European wood for a more qualified use and for cheaper manufactured goods Production of thermo treated wood VOC Free (zero VOC Volatile Organic Compound) which makes it odourless and therefore suitable for indoor use

12 PROJECT ACTIONS The first phase of the project includes the construction of the Thermovacuum industrial equipment for the vacuum treatment of the wood. The plant was installed in April 2014 at Ecolwood, it has a capacity of about 1600 m3 / year of wood. They are still in progress by the National Research Council Ivalsa final tests for the setup of the process on wood species The process is patented in Europe, and the patent is currently being registrated in China, Brazil, India and the United States

14 PROJECT ACTIONS During the second phase of project implementation will be carried out measurements of the energy environmental and ecological benefits, that Thermovacuum process achieves in real conditions of production. During this actions, thanks to the scientific laboratories of CNR will be performed the LCA (Life Cycle Analysis of the product) that will allow to compare the environmental and ecological benefits of the finished product.

15 PROJECT ACTIONS During the third phase all certification tests for product and process will be completed, with the aim to give guarantee to buyer and end users about characteristics of product: - Absolute environmental friendliness of the finished product and process - Performance characteristics of the finished product ThermoVacuumWood The process standardization and control technologies, allow production to ensure quality and repeatability of results

16 PROJECT ACTIONS The final phase foresee actions for market penetration, with the communication and direct marketing to end users and operators of the various wood sectors (interior and exterior, furniture, doors and windows and interior floors and external). Practical applications and tests of thermovacuum wood are foreseen with the aim to let the wood operators know high quality and try to replace tropical or traditional wood in several common uses. In this phase Arredo mare will furnish the interior of a luxury boat with ThermoVacuumWood.

17 INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THERMOVACUUM PROCESS The most innovative features of Thermovacuum solution in comparison with state of art are: 1) vacuum process technology 2) one step process (no wood handling) 3) close-loop process 4) no chemical added / used and no natural resources consumption (like water) 5) auto-inerting process of wood: it means no gas injection during the process / utilization (NO2) to inertize the process chamber 6) Adiabatic process (NO energy exchange with external)

18 INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THERMOVACUUM PROCESS More 7) The most ecologic and environment friend process available allows Thermovacuum to reach important performances like: 1) extremely ecologic process: 2) lower electric energy consumption (reduction about 30 up 70%) 3) lower thermic energy consumption (reduction about 30%) 4) lower air emission (reduction about 90%) 5) sensibly lower waste production (reduction about 80% compared with BAT)

19 INNOVATIVE FEATURES OF THERMOVACUUM PRODUCT 1. No odorous components (disturbing presence in all the other heat-treated wood which makes them unsuitable for use indoors) 2. absolute environmental compatibility and fully recyclable wood. It has no contact with any additional product. 3. Extreme dimensional stability to external agents and weather conditions (changes in temperature and humidity) 4. extremely low permeability by biological agents even without surface treatment or impregnation (eco-toxic and carcinogenic) 5. Improve certain characteristics of wood (for example hardness) allowing to ennoble wood of low quality
