4 MCS EXPLAINED What is MCS? Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is an internationally recognised quality assurance scheme. It certifies technologies used to produce electricity and heat from renewable sources, as well as the Quality Management Systems (QMS). An installer can become MCS certified in their chosen renewable technologies. Why do I need MCS Certification? Installers often require MCS to take part in various incentives and funding schemes. For example, it is a requirement of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and the Feed In Tariff (FIT). 6 RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE EXPLAINED What is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)? The RHI provides a payment for generating heat from a renewable source and currently applies to Air Source Heat Pumps, Ground Source Heat Pumps, Solar Thermal and Biomass Boilers. There is both a domestic and commercial RHI and the payments are different for these and for the renewable technology types. Domestic properties require a Green Deal assessment on application. The FIT provides a payment for generating electricity from a low-carbon source. The key technology which this incentive supports is Solar PV. The tariff level which the customer receives is dependent on the EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of the property and the capacity of the renewable technology. 7 GREEN DEAL EXPLAINED What is the Green Deal? The Green Deal is a finance scheme which makes money available to fund retrofit projects with no up-front costs to the property owner for the installation. Following a Green Deal Assessment on a household, undertaken by an accredited assessor, a report is generated with suggestions on how to make the household more energy efficient. Upon completion of the install, the consumer s energy supplier is notified of the changes. Bills then remain at the higher rate even though the actual energy bill amount is less, because the property is more energy efficient. The difference in cost is then used to pay off the energy efficiency install over a set period of time. If you re interested in becoming a Green Deal Advisor, see page 15. 8 TECHNOLOGIES EXPLAINED AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS WHAT IT DOES Air Source Heat Pumps extract the outside air and convert it into heat. HOW IT WORKS The outdoor fan unit takes the heat from the air and passes it over an evaporator. This cycle boils the liquid refrigerant and creates high pressure. This in turn creates heat energy which is then transferred to the heating system via a heat exchanger. WHAT IT DOES Ground Source Heat Pumps use the heat from the ground, using a pipework system buried in a shallow trench or as a borehole to provide heating or hot water. HOW IT WORKS Ground Source Heat pumps harness free energy from the ground. Using surface coils, an antifreeze/water solution is pumped around and takes heat from the ground and passes it through compressors in an indoor unit which boils a refrigerant to create high pressure. BIOMASS BOILERS SOLAR THERMAL WHAT IT DOES Biomass Boilers use wood as their fuel source and are classed as carbon neutral. HOW IT WORKS Wood fuel like pellets or chips are fed into the boiler at a controlled rate which is then ignited. The hot gases produced go through the heat exchanger in the boiler, to provide heat for a heating system or for hot water. WHAT IT DOES Solar thermal collectors take heat from the sun to meet hot water requirements for a property. HOW IT WORKS Solar Thermal systems generate heat collected in solar panels in a specially formulated fluid called glycol. This runs through pipework in a cylinder or boiler that then heats your domestic hot water supply CPS Renewables Guide v3.indd 8 06/11/ :42

9 TECHNOLOGIES EXPLAINED UNDERFLOOR HEATING RAINWATER HARVESTING WHAT IT DOES Underfloor heating creates an even surface temperature across the entire floor area. Underfloor Heating runs at a lower heat than conventional heating methods which reduces wasted heat. HOW IT WORKS Underfloor heating consists of pipe that is installed in the floors that evenly distributes the heat within the room as opposed to a radiator on a wall. WHAT IT DOES Rainwater harvesting is the collection of water that would otherwise have been wasted. This water can then be used to flush toilets, water gardens or even feed the washing machine amongst other nondrinking grade water requirements. HOW IT WORKS Rainwater is directed into an underground storage tank where it is filtered for leaves and other debris. The stored water is then pumped into the house for use. SOLAR CYLINDERS SOLAR PV WHAT IT DOES Solar cylinders are used to store hot water heated by solar thermal panels. HOW IT WORKS Solar thermal panels and tubes on a roof will generate heat from sunlight, pipework from the panels pump water through a coil in a cylinder to transfer the heat energy to provide hot water. A correctly sized and insulated cylinder can store the hot water for use later, even if it is cloudy outside. WHAT IT DOES Solar Photovoltaics (PV) use the sun to generate electricity. HOW IT WORKS Solar Photovoltaic modules are mounted on the roof in a southerly direction and are connected to the property s consumer unit to generate electricity. 14 MCS CERTIFICATION EASY MCS TRAINING COURSE All Microgeneration (MCS) installers will be required to be certified by a UKAS accredited organisation. 17 ASSESSMENTS GREEN DEAL ASSESSMENT Green Deal Assessments are required to access Green Deal funding for energy efficiency measures to be undertaken on properties or commercial premises and, also for the Renewable Heat Incentive. Consumers can arrange a Green Deal Assessment or installers can provide this service for their customers. 1 Day Service Green Deal Assessment What s included? A Green Deal accredited advisor will visit your property and complete an Energy and Occupancy Assessment on the property. Fee 125 ex VAT ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATE (EPC) An EPC rates the energy efficiency of a property using the Government approved RdSAP methodology. It also provides information on how to make your home more energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions. 1 Day Service Energy Performance Certificate What s included?
