10 (NOS) (NOS) describe what an individual needs to do, to know and to understand in order to carry out a particular job role or function. NOS are National because they can be used in every part of the UK where the functions are carried out. NOS are Occupational because they describe the performance required of an individual when carrying out functions in the workplace, i.e. in their occupation. NOS are Standards because they are statements of effective performance which have been agreed by a representative sample of employers and other key stakeholders and approved by the UK NOS Panel. A competence qualification is a set of prescribed learning outcomes and assessment criteria, based upon NOS, required for a particular occupation or job role. This type of qualification is achieved through the demonstration and assessment of competence (that is the skills, knowledge and understanding a person has gained) in the relevant work situation. A training qualification is a learning process that involves the acquisition of knowledge, honing of skills, concepts, rules, or changing of attitudes and behaviours to enhance the performance of the learner. Training is an activity with the potential to lead to skilled behaviour for the employee. Apprenticeships An apprenticeship is a nationally recognised training programme combining real work with learning and training, both on and off the job. An apprentice will receive a wage whilst training and working towards the full apprenticeship. An Apprenticeship combines hands-on training at work with studying at College, allowing them to learn on the job while gaining knowledge, skills, nationally recognised qualifications and earning money - all at the same time. Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) Asset Skills, SummitSkills and ConstructionSkills are working in partnership as the Green Skills Alliance. 10
