Defining Sustainability Social Equity Healthy Environment Economic Stability
Our Sustainability Department Maintain existing projects and programs Recycling/composting, monitoring solar panels & fuel cells, hazardous waste management, biodiesel production, training programs, greenhouse gas inventory Look for efficiency improvements Work with all departments Provide research and advice Education Employees, consumers, peers
Why is Zero Waste Important to SNBC? Employee Engagement Reduce landfill contributions Preserve natural resources and keep materials in production cycles Avoids disposal costs Revenue stream Reduce GHG emissions Create jobs
Drivers: SNBC Zero Waste Goal Improve environmental health by reducing landfill contribution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, sustaining natural resources, and preventing the release of harmful chemicals into land, water and air Save money by reducing utilities costs and resource consumption and to provide a revenue stream by selling commodities
Potential Wastes Energy Compressed Air Employee time/productivity Miscellaneous solid waste Water Packaging Materials Food Parts/Service Money And most importantly BEER
Approach to Sustainability Focus on Zero Waste Goal Close Loops Auditing/benchmarking Tracking Technology implementation or process/behavior change
2013 Resource Recovery Over 52,000 tons diverted from landfill 106 tons to landfill = 99.8% diversion Avoided ~$6.2 million in disposal fees ~$980,000 in revenue 95.43% Diversion excluding spent grain
