Technology and Climate Change Reducing CO2 Emissions

Global Climate Change Experts tell us that climate change is happening. Warmer temperatures and extreme weather events an indicator. Today's atmosphere contains 32 per cent more carbon dioxide than it did at the start of the industrial era. World s population projected to double every 54 years; 6 billion grows to 12 billion by Population growth and improved standards of living in developing countries will increase energy demand by 50% by Burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil & gas) a key contributor to the release of CO2 into the atmosphere

Global Climate Change Fossil fuels provide 85% of the world s energy supply. The world s electrical production responsible for approximately 10 billion tonnes of CO2. CO2 emissions will steadily increase, unless intervention takes place. A technological solution is required to deal with the shear magnitude of the problem. Every billion kwh (TWh) of nuclear avoids one million tonnes of CO2. Nuclear energy is an environmentally efficient means to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. What can Bruce Power do?

Bruce Power Today Largest operating nuclear facility in the World. Site capable of producing 6,300 MW or between 25-30% of Ontario s electricity needs. Largest private investor in Ontario s infrastructure over the last decade. One of Canada s largest public-private partnerships. Key electricity hub in Ontario with new transmission infrastructure, strong regional and provincial support for the site. Majority of employees owners in the business.

Ontario s Energy Supply Mix

Bruce Power s Electricity Output

2012 A Transformation Year Return to service of Units 1&2 solid operational performance. Investment in Unit 3 - $300 Million life extension outage Unit 4 outage Non-nuclear enhancements, life extension. Before its planned outage, Unit 4 ran 569 days a new record. Solid operation from Bruce B 125 days straight with all four units operating a new record. Bruce B produced 15% of Ontario s electricity. Unit 6 ended 2012 as one of the World s top-rated CANDU reactors 100% score.

Output Profile: Nuclear Up, Coal Down A revitalized eight-unit Bruce Power Site: 70% of the energy needed to phase-out coal in Ontario.

Revitalizing the Bruce Power Site: Then & Now Then Bruce Output Down: 15 years ago, on October 16, 1997, Unit 1 was laid-up taking 750 MW of electricity off Ontario's electricity grid. Unit 2 was laid-up two years earlier on October 8, Units 3 and 4 were both laid-up in Many thought Bruce A would never return to service. Coal Output Up: Following Units 1 and 2 being removed from service in 1995 and 1997, combined with Units 3 and 4 in 1998, fossil generation dramatically increased in Ontario - 12 percent of electricity in 1995 to 29 percent in Now Bruce Output Up: 15 years later, Bruce Units 1&2 are producing low-cost, clean electricity. Since 2004, Bruce A Units 3 and 4 demonstrate safe, reliable operations. The revitalization of Bruce A will provide Ontario with 3,000 MW of low-cost, clean electricity, doubling the number of operating Units on site from 4 to 8, while Bruce B continues to be counted on for 15 percent of Ontario's electricity. Coal Output Down: In the last 10 years, Ontario reduces its use of coal by 90 percent, accounting for 3 percent of the electricity in That's a 93 percent reduction in Ontario sulphur emissions and the number of smog days in the Greater Toronto Area has dropped from 45 to 12.

Benefits for Ontario : 3,190 staff to 4,088 staff 4 to 8 Units of operation Percentage of staff under : 10% 2012: 32% Percentage of staff : 40% 2012: 24% Percentage of staff : 44% 2012: 32%

Nuclear in Ontario The government has identified a 50% role for nuclear over the next 20 years through Ontario s Long Term Energy Plan. This will be achieved through: The Bruce Power Site 6,300 MW Refurbishment of the Darlington facility 3,500 MW Managing the end of life of the Pickering facility to ,000 MW
