1 Caragabal Public School Environmental Management Plan Vision: The students and staff of Caragabal Public School look after our school and local environment and the animals that use it. We care for and nurture our environment by increasing the bio-diversity in our playground, reducing our carbon emissions, water consumption and waste production. These actions ensure our environment is healthy. We believe the good things we do will lead to an environment that is sustainable and that will continue to thrive. Our School Management Plan acknowledges and supports the development of our School Environmental Management Plan. Our Environmental Management Committee will consist of all students and a staff member. Other staff will help our committee to achieve our goals.
2 Curriculum Environmental concepts and activities will be included in units of work so they are "seamless" and "embedded" in the teaching program and are part of the syllabus outcomes. Where appropriate, lessons will involve students in actions for the environment so students will live in and help manage an environmentally friendly school. Our achievements: At Caragabal Public School we: have learned about renewable and non-renewable energy in class. Succesfully participated in Clever Climate Energy Savers. Investigated critters that live in or around the Caragabal Creek. Presented at Kids Teaching Kids Day in Forbes. Participated in Birds of the Bland, studying and auditing birds that visit our environment. Propagate native trees. have established vegetable gardens in the school. use garden produce to cook with. eat produce from the garden for Crunch and Sip put entries in the Grenfell show. have entered the Stephanie Alexander Harvest Table competition. Need a better space for cooking and food preparation. We would like more gardens. The Weddin Shire Council has recently put recycling bins at our tip and we are not sorting our rubbish and using them. The school will continue to source interesting environmental units of work to maintain learning about healthy sustainable environments. The natural environment is becoming scarcer Issue: Kitchen facilities are not up to scratch for cooking. Goal: Install a cooking workstation into the creative and practical arts room. All Caragabal School Community 2012 $200 Issue: Increase student engagement in lessons. Goal: Incorporate energy, waste, biodiversity and water knowledge and actions into lessons. 4 Energy The electricity that Caragabal Public School uses is produced at coal-fired power stations. Electricity production can be a major polluter of the air and is a major contributing factor to Climate Change. For every 1 kilowatt hour (kwh) of electricity used we produce 1kg of greenhouse gases which takes up the same space as a large fridge. Last year ( ), Caragabal Public School used kwh of electricity which meant we produced tonne of Greenhouse gas. We are always looking at ways to reduce the energy we use and will also investigate alternative energy systems. We will not waste energy. Our achievements: We don t turn on lights unless someone is using the room. We have applied for National Solar School Funding for a 5.3 kw system solar panels. Keep doors closed when the heaters are on. Climate Clever Energy Savers grant for energy efficient blinds. Verandahs and Covered Walkways. Make snakes for under doors in winter. Only have heater pilot lights on for terms 2 and 3 Air conditioners serviced for terms 1 and 4. We leave computers in standby every night There are other appliances left on standby There are too many lights. Fridges left on over holidays. Boiling System left on. Temperatures need to be monitored. No signage to tell people what to do.

6 Water Caragabal PublicSchool will not waste water. Water is a scarce and essential commodity for our survival and is especially vulnerable in times of climate change. We will not waste water. Our achievements: Through water savers grant we have dual flushing toilets in the boys, girls and handicapped toilets, spring loaded taps and two extra tanks. In the garden we have timers on most or our garden taps. We have replaced many garden taps to stop leaks. We have tanks to store water to water grounds and wash hands There is still water not being collected off the new BER Building. One tap is still leaking. Some children do not know what the difference is for full and half flush. Taps sometimes left dripping in girls toilet and Handicapped toilet Action Plans for Future Water Conservation Projects Issue: Water is being wasted Goal: To utilise water carefully without waste Seek joint funding to BER Building to be install a new tank. either connected to existing tank or to a new tank. More water for use in the Ensure all taps and hoses have correct fittings and do not leak. Educate all students as to what dual flushing toilets do. playground No leaking taps or hoses. Students and staff using dual flush toilets properly. Principal and General Assistant General Assistant 2012 $3000 At all times Staff 2011 Nil $200 per annum
7 Waste The waste stream in the school environment is a major concern as an environmental issue. We will not waste paper. Our achievements: We have a compost bin and a compost area Paper is recycled in class We feed the worms with the rotten vegies/fruit We reuse where ever possible. Bottles make green houses in the garden. Each year we participate in Clean up Australia Day We are making a chicken coop so we can feed our scraps to the chooks. The weddin Shire Council has put recycling bins at the tip and we are not maling use of them. Recycling bins at the tip are full. Some paper that could be recycled is being thrown out. There is too much waste at lunch time. Action Plans for Future Waste Management Projects Issue: To much waste at school Goal: Reducing waste at our school by 20% Create bins at school Waste sorted for recycling. 8 Biodiversity Gardens we design gardens at Caragabal Public School we consider biodiversity. We plant mostly native plants and different layers of plants including trees, grasses and groundcovers. Our achievements: There are a large number of trees in our playground and many are native. We have vegetables, fruit trees, native and succulent gardens. There is a good cover of grass. A variety of birds use the playground and we know most of them. There is evidence we hace a possum and possibly an echidna in the playground. We have a greenhouse where we propogate trees. We grow native trees and grasses. We have a Bird bath We don t seem to have very many small birds We do not have enough mid and understory shrubs for birds Action Plans for Biodiversity Management Projects Issue: There isn t any habitat area for small birds. Goal: To create a small bird native habitat area. Designate a specific Native habitat in place. Principal area and develop it Mid and understory Students into a native habitat. shrubs for birds Plant understory of planted. native shrubs and grasses $ Caragabal Public School will review this School Environmental Management Plan and our practices with the Primary students, key school staff and Environmental support staff in term 3 of each year to update our concerns, issues and actions to be taken to maintain an environmentally healthy school community.
