8 Environmental Technologies in FP7 Ł Environmental Technologies; for managing resources/treating pollution more efficiently, related to water, soil, air, sea, soil, waste..; for preventing or reducing environmental risks and disasters, promoting sustainable production and consumption, technologies for the sustainable management of the human urban and rural environment as built environment Ł Protection, conservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, including human habitat: improved damage assessment on cultural heritage, development of innovative conservation strategies, foster integration of cultural heritage in the urban setting. 9 The starting point for FP7 Cultural Heritage Research in the Environment Programme The overarching objective is the Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, which requires from research, more than in the past, a multiple integrated approach : Focus more on comple assemblies and not only on individual materials Indivisibility among damage functions, assessment and monitoring for conservation Importance of contet in research on the moveable and immoveable heritage 9

10 ENV Environment Priority: the protection of cultural heritage Damage assessment, diagnosis and monitoring for the preventive conservation and maintenance of the cultural heritage: comple assemblies and not on individual materials, guidelines and clear recommendations, broad impact as regards the variety of cultural assets and environmental conditions. MPC or other third countries welcome (Collaborative projects of small/medium size for the moveableimmoveable heritage: number quite limited but not fied : eg 2,or 3, or 4 depending on S/T quality ) ENV Networking and coordination of National programmes, knowledge transfer and optimisation of results in cultural heritage ; ERA-Net for the preservation of the tangible cultural heritage ( Coordination Action: ERA- Net preparatory meeting on 24/0/07 in Brussels ENV ) Consolidation & results dissemination : large European conference in 2008 in one EU country not having organised it yet with national support (Support Action) ENV

15 ENV Environment Priority Built Environment - Support Action I Low resource consumption buildings and infrastructure To promote and facilitate the uptake of new or improved technologies which reduce the life-cycle environmental impact of the use of multiple, natural and non-renewable resources (water, primary raw materials, energy, land) as well as reduce the generation of waste and use of hazardous substances. Analysis of case-studies, pre-normative research, standards, training needs, directives and regulatory framework and policy recommendations should be considered with non-technical barriers to the uptake of environmental technologies. Evaluation of impact of economic and institutional instruments to influence the choice of building and infrastructure. Support to Directives on energy, pollution prevention, landfill, waste, etc. Basis for industrial research, collaboration with FP7 NMP SME and policy relevant research 5

16 ENV Environment Theme Built Environment - Support Action II Performance indicators for health, comfort and safety of the indoor built environment To apply new design and technologies that improve the impact of the indoor built environment on health, comfort, feeling of safety, and positive stimulation (including those for people with impaired, cognitive, sensorial or motor capacity) it is necessary to review current standards. That requires: (i) inventory of current performance indicators used in design and construction and (ii) identifying areas where new indicators for health and safety should be developed (including accessibility and indoor environmental quality) (iii) finally, recommendations for design and technologies can be formulated. Support to Directives on Construction Products, and on Energy Building Performance, collaboration with FP7 NMP; SME and Policy relevant 6

Development of improved centralised and decentralised low cost sustainable solutions for water supply and sanitation in peri-urban areas in developing countries. 20 Finally, Ł As regards the built environment and cultural heritage, integrate better the international cooperation (MPC, Asia, Latin America, US, China, Japan etc) and coordinate with other European/National /and possibly worldwide organisations. Ł Importance of role of «generic» organisations and frameworks or those more specialised.(national and European: Council of Europe, ESF/COST, EUREKA, ECTP-FACH and world levels ICOM, ICOMOS, ICCROM, UNESCO..) for epressions of future research needs especially those targetting the movable heritage (no ETP embedding the movable C.H.) Ł Scope and funding limited for environment technologies at start of FP7; therefore complementarity needed with other EU programmes eg FP7 NMP,IST, other public-private opportunities for research and coordination ( cf later JETI submitted for construction?) Ł Think also to other EC and related FP7 events ( Info-Day of DG research but also including socio-economic progr. with cultural heritage, DG Information Society & Medias, EC DG Regional Policy, DG Education and Culture,) Ł Recent EU enlargement (Romania, Bulgaria on //07),and then Croatia..
