1 CASE STUDY OF MERUS TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION IN SHARJAH ELECTRICITY & WATER AUTHORITY SEWA Layyah Power Station For Electricity Generation & Water Desalination

2 Overview Sharjah Electricity & Water Authority (SEWA) is the Water, Electricity and Natural Gas production and distribution body for the entire Emirate of Sharjah which is the Industrial capital of the United Arab Emirates. It s Power Station for Electricity Generation and Water Desalination is located in the Layyah Region of Sharjah where MERUS Technology was introduced for the first time when it comes to the Desalination Sector of the United Arab Emirates. Application at SEWA SEWA had initially provided an opportunity to MERUS Technology to prove its claims. The Application was in DESAL-7 Unit of SEWA where the effect of MERUS Technology was to be observed were 2 (two) newly replaced Sea Water Heat Exchangers which had severe problems of Rust, Scaling and Bio-Fouling. To prove its claims, MERUS Technology had installed 3 (three) MERUS Rings at the Inlet of these newly replaced Heat Exchangers (Tube Side) from the period 23rd December 2007 till 16th March Initial Condition: Before Installation of MERUS Ring. Both Sea-Water Heat Exchangers were replaced with new ones on 23rd December Both Heat Exchangers had to be replaced every 3 years after operation due to reduced efficiency over the period. Both Heat Exchangers had to be manually cleaned once annually whilst in Shut-Down by means of hydro-jetting and acid (chemical) cleaning. Considering the above situation, 3 (three) MERUS Rings were installed (as shown in Figures below) within the time period of 23rd December 2007 till 16th March 2009.

4 Success Criteria Reduced Rust, Scale and Fouling levels as compared to past history of the Heat Exchangers upon visual inspection during next interval of shut-down. Reduced blockages of Heat Exchanger tubes upon visual inspection during next interval of shut-down. Results after Visual Inspection on 16th March ) Water Pre-Heater (HE No.1): 2 nd Pass of HE inlet No.1. No Sign of Corrosion, Rust, Scale and/or Fouling. HE face clearly visible. No blockages of tubes. Note: The condition of Sacrificial Anodes remains the same even after approx 1 year and 3 months of operation. HE No.1 Lid/Cover. No Sign of Corrosion on the HE Cover.

5 1 st Pass of the HE No.1 Inlet. HE face clearly visible. No tubes blockage as all the tubes were in see through condition. 4 th Pass of the HE. This is the hottest part of the HE and is showing no sign of Corrosion or blockage of tubes by Scaling or Fouling.

6 2) Vent Condenser-VC (HE No.2): Vent Condensor Inlet. No Sign of Corrosion or any kind of blockage. All tubes upon inspection were found to be clean. VC Lid/Cover. No deposition of any kind.

7 Inference Both Heat Exchangers even after continuous operation of approx 15 months in Sea-Water Service were found to be clean just as they were at the time of replacement. No deposition of Scale or Fouling. No sign of corrosion as well. The sacrificial anodes were in same condition as they were at the time of replacement. SEWA personnel claim that there is no requirement of mechanical cleaning by means of hydro-jetting and/or acid (chemical) cleaning. Both Heat Exchangers to be put back in operation directly again since no mechanical cleaning is required. Overall shelf-life and efficiency of both Heat Exchangers increased until now to approx 137%. Figure can be increased drastically if MERUS Ring installed permanently. This demonstration stipulates that the Shut-Down interval which is at present once every year can be extended drastically which will further profit in no production loss as it is maintained.
