2 DATE CLIENT Wingecarribee Shire Council PRODUCTS Organic Top Dress CLIENT BRIEF The original brief from Wingecarribee Shire Council was to improve the soil health and turf cover of 10 sportsfields. Product needs to be fairly light (compared to sand) and easy to spread. A sand and soil component is required to fill and level the area. An organic component is required to provide nutrients, improve water holding capacity and assist with turf growth. LOCATION OVERVIEW Wingecarribee Shire covers an area of 2,700 square kilometres that is typically referred to as the Southern Highlands. Located midway between Sydney and Canberra off the Hume Highway. Wingecarribee Shire is approximately 110 kilometres southwest of the Sydney CBD and is part of regional Capital Country and to some extent can be considered part of the Southern Tablelands. Wingecarribee Shire is an important catchment area for water supply to Sydney, Wollongong and the northern Shoalhaven. 5 GO COMPOST AND TURF GO Compost can be incorporated into both turf underlays and topdressing mixes to improve turf health and performance. Turf requires large amounts of water and nutrients, particularly when used in amenities such as sports fields and parks. Unfavourable environmental conditions can hamper growth and leave grass stressed, which in turn leads to disease. Using GO Compost in turf mixes increases organic matter which can assist by: Increasing water holding capacity - Trials have found that organic matter can hold up to twice its weight or more in water. Top dressing with organic materials keeps moisture at the soil surface, giving access of water to roots and reducing water repellency in soils. Provides nutrients - Adding compost to mixes increases availability of the major nutrients and micro nutrients such as iron, manganese, copper and zinc. It can also assist with the availability of phosphorus, reducing the need for artificial fertilisers. Improves resilience - Compost contains humic substances, provides growth regulators and stimulates microbial activity. This can lead to enhanced turf grass tolerance to environmental stresses such as temperature and UV radiation. Have You Tried? Commercial CASE STUDY: Wingecarribee Shire 5
