SET-PLAN IMPLEMENTATION The Steering Group of the SET-Plan in its last meeting on October 28 th, 2010 agreed to speed-up the execution of activities of the Implementation Plans (IPs) of the European Industrial Initiatives (EIIs). It was decided to collectively identify the possibilities for launching joint actions between Member States and/or Member States and the European Commission. The mapping exercise carried out through this questionnaire builds upon this decision of the Steering Group. It aims to identify topics for leveraging best ongoing efforts with complementary joint actions, as prioritized by the Implementation Plans. In this phase the mapping will focus on projects and activities with a total budget higher than 1 M. We trust that you also consider the success of this exercise important for the immediate implementation of the SET-Plan. MAPPING OF PROJECTS, ACTIVITIES, RESOURCES AND INVESTMENTS To which EII(s) is your project, activity, resource or investment relevant? (multiple choices are possible) WIND SOLAR GRIDS CCS NUCLEAR BIOENERGY A. PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES GENERAL INFORMATION Name of project: Acronym: Give project acronym, if applicable Location: Applicable only for demo/pilot project; enter specific location(s) and Member State(s) Research and Development of Technologies for better energy efficiency, and CO 2 Capture and Valorisation VALCAPEF No demo/pilot activities foreseen Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 1 of 7
Project partners: List project partners; name coordinator first. For European & international projects mention the country affiliation of each partner TECNALIA Research and Innovation, Foundation Gaiker, University of the Basque Country. Project website: - Contact details: Name, affiliation and contact details of the project coordinator Start date: mm-yyyy Duration: in months Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 2 of 7 Coordinator: Begoña de Busturia, Head of CO2 Capture and Valorisation area. TECNALIA Research and Innovation. begona.debusturia@tecnalia.com 01/01/ SHORT PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project aims in achieve a reduction of CO 2 emissions trough a holistic approach, with the improvement of several related technologies. Better energy efficiency is to be achieved with the integration of gas domestic boilers with solar-energy technology. Regarding CO 2 capture, preand post- combustion capture processes are improved, including biomass gasification, catalytic reforming, precombustion CO 2 separation processes, new absorbents and adsorbents for postcombustion, and membrane separation. CO 2 is also considered as chemical feedstock and two processes are developed for chemical valorisation (to oxalic acid and to glycerol carbonate). Finally, CO 2 biofixation is considered in two axes: CO 2 as nutrient for microalgae and evaluation of the interaction between CO 2 and ecosystems, to find out the capacity of an ecosystem to act as CO 2 reservoir. PROJECT GOALS & OBJECTIVES Goals: Indicate main qualitative goals Optimisation of the integration between domestic gas boilers and domestic solar energy panel systems New developments in pre-combustion capture processes, trough gasification, gas purification and efficient CO 2 pre-combustion capture Development of new technological actives for post-combustion CO 2 capture (chemical, physical and membrane processes) Obtaining of new chemical pathways for the use of CO 2 as chemical feedstock Assessment and optimization of different biofixation processes.
Objectives: Indicate quantitative objectives (similar to KPIs of the IPs of the EIIs). Also indicate intermediate milestones where applicable. Domestic boilers with accumulators and thermostatic regulation Validated models using CFD New design methods for solar-integrated boilers Transfer of knowledge to the industry Advanced system for the transformation of biogas into a rich H 2 gas Catalytic systems for the reforming of bioalcohols Bio-products for substitution of oil-based products New CO 2 capture processes based on absorption and membranes Advanced chemical solvents beyond state of the art (MEA) for CO 2 capture in port-combustion Physical adsorbents for CO 2 post combustion capture, based on PSA process Gas separation processes based on membranes Sustainable production process (both environmentally and economically)for obtaining of Oxalic acid from waste CO 2 New chemical pathways for the obtaining of glycerol carbonate, as solution for two environmental problems Implementation of CO 2 use as nutrient for algal biomass and further biomassprocessing Models to evaluate the interaction between a vegetal ecosystem (Quercus Ilex) and atmospheric CO 2. Characterization of the ecosystem as CO 2 net emitter or net reservoir PERFORMANCE OF THE PROJECT Assumed state-of-the-art: Describe quantitatively the state-of-the-art that the project objectives are based upon Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 3 of 7 Domestic gas boilers: Well established technology in Spain, lack of improvements in efficiency and integration with renewable energy Gasification of biomass biogas treatment, promising technologies which need further improvements. The project includes new biomass sources (as glycerol) and an integrated pathway
Achievements so far: If intermediate results are available, please indicate the current achievements (qualitative and/or quantitative) Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 4 of 7 for biomass-energy use. CO 2 Capture processes: Depending on the technique, there are different degrees of development on state of the art. From the well established MEA processes for chemical absorption (but there is a need for new solvents with less energy requirements) to a big room for improvements in physical and membrane separation processes, none of them beyond pilot demonstration at the current moment. CO 2 Valorisation: Currently, few existent chemical processes (e.g. urea production) are based on CO 2 utilisation. The project will propose new pathways for CO 2 valorisation There is much research on CO 2 and microalgae, but there is need for further developments on CO 2 delivery to the cultures and downstream processes. To promote plant cultures as CO 2 mitigation tool (as commonly accepted) it is necessary a better understanding of interaction between atmospheric CO 2 and vegetal ecosystems Obtaining of a wide knowledge basis in the form of papers, books, and relevant national and international contacts (technology platforms) CFD model for gas domestic boilers performance and its experimental validation Proof of concept in solar test bench Catalytic systems for H 2 production (gas reforming) Catalytic systems for H 2 production (wet pathway) Experimental designs for biogas, glycerol gasification and syngas Biogas cleaning using PSA Design of a gasification laboratory pilot plant Assements of chemical solvents and obtaining of new promising compounds Design of a absorption-desorption laboratory pilot plant Process (to be furhter optimized) for oxalic acid
Difficulties and potential risks: Indicate briefly problems encountered or to be encountered in the short term (e. g. overall legislative context, public acceptance, permitting, etc.) obtaining using CO 2 as feedstock First steps for glycerol carbonate obtaining Selection of optimal microalgae strains and photobioreactor testing Design and erection of the flux measurement equipment for ecosuystem interaction. Development of mathematical models (Eddy covariance) for data treatment. As the project is not facing an industrial or pilot demonstration phase, there are no associated risks FUNDING & BUDGET Funding programme: Give the name of funding programme Funding public entity: Indicate which public entity is in charge of /manages the programme Total (public & private) project budget ( ): ETORTEK Basque Government Public funding ( ): Total effort (person-months) 220 DISSEMINATION OF PROJECT RESULTS Publications, presentations in conferences and workshops, and other dissemination means: Give highlights only TOWARDS COMMERCIALISATION Rev. 1 January 2011 Page 5 of 7
