This project involved developing lectures on tree identification, phenology,

2 and the effects of climate change on forests. The laboratory activities that were developed pertained to data collection, analysis, and a final scientific report with an emphasis placed on developing a knowledge of the process of scientific inquiry and teaching future educators how to implement a citizen science program in their classrooms. Vascular Plants Lab 2016 Led one lab section of 8 upper-level biology students and assisted with a second. This course stressed modern teaching and learning techniques; I was involved in implementing these strategies to help students grasp the complex concepts and interrelationships in vascular plant taxonomy, ontogeny, and morphology. Throughout the course, I primarily gave lectures and assisted students as they worked through hands-on lab activities. Field Ecology 2015 This upper-level course of 22 students focused on weekly or bi-monthly research projects that encompassed data collection, data analysis, interpretation of results, and writing a small scientific paper on the week s work. Duties included assistance with student data analysis and hypothesis formation, as well as grading weekly lab reports. Foundations in Biology: Diversity, Evolution & Ecology 2014 Led my own independent, 9 student class discussion group. I assisted in writing exams, creating formative assessments, and guest lecturing for the 58 student lecture course. Mycology Lab 2013, 2016 In this class of 24 students, my duties included preparation of lab materials, identification of specimens, and assisting students with learning important concepts in fungal morphology and ecology. Teaching Assistant and Research Technician, St. Olaf College Biogeochemistry 2012 I helped a groups of 12 students devise and implement independent research projects through in-class consultation time and out of class office hours. Regular duties included assisting students with methodology, statistics, and project design. Biology PLANet Curriculum Development 2015 Collaborated with Dr. Daniel Hickey in the IU School of Education to develop and test a novel form of online biology curriculum that aligns with next-generation science standards (NGSS). The lessons developed focused on increasing student engagement through the use of online collaboration and peer assessment. These lessons were implemented in a pilot study for 26 students in an introductory class at IU Online High School to gather data for an NSF grant proposal. Indiana University Integrated Freshman Learning Experience 2015 The IU IFLE program introduces high-achieving incoming freshmen students with a strong interest in biology to scientific research. I served as the primary mentor for an incoming freshman student for six weeks. Mentorship duties focused on enhancing the student s scientific thinking skills through the design, implementation, and presentation of an original research project. Indiana University Jim Holland Summer Science Research Program The IU Holland SSRP program focuses on introducing high school students from underrepresented populations to scientific research. I was the primary mentor for a high 3

4 school student for one week and helped them implement an original research project, including data collection, data analysis, and oral presentation of results.
