When there is insufficient rainfall it is necessary to provide additional irrigation to the plant. Our project aims to automate this procedure by analyzing the moisture content of the soil and atmospheric temperature. The input from the moisture sensors and the temperature sensor is analyzed by the microprocessor (arduino) and the plants are watered using a specifically designed matrix system. The water is obtained from a reservoir kept at a height to provide potential energy for the water. The sensors are activated only when the soil is dry. If there is more than one signal the microcontroller will prioritize the received signal based on a first come first served basis and irrigate the field accordingly. India s GDP is primarily dependent on agriculture. Therefore, this automated irrigation system will reduce human labor and water consumption thereby increasing productivity. This type if automated irrigation system is ideal for indoor agriculture or vertical agriculture etc. It could also be used for home gardening needs or could be used in multiple potted plants. So it is suitable for both commercial as well as growing plants at home. Keywords-Vertical agriculture, arduino, moisture sensor, temperature sensor, water, reservoir, microprocessor I. INTRODUCTION Irrigation is a very essential part of agriculture especially when there is inadequate supply of water through rain fall. Therefore, there should be an easy way to irrigate the plants. The sprinkler and drip irrigation systems are different types of irrigating the fields. But there is a necessity to automate this process. And our aim is to design and implement an automatic plant irrigation system. This could be done in different methods. Multiple sprinkler could be installed in place for each plant. This is the usual practice. But we make an improvement by introducing our new matrix system which is able to efficiently supply water to all the plants with the help of just one water outlet. There will be multiple input sensors placed in place for the purpose if detecting moisture of the soil but instead of giving multiple outlets we aim to give only a single outlet for water passage.this method is an ingenious method for automatic irrigation purposes. This process could thus eliminate the excess piping required in case of the drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems. The matrix irrigation system is very efficient and saves both manual labor and water consumption. II.OBJECTIVE The main objective of this project is to automate the process of irrigating the plants. The procedure could also improve the current methods of automatic irrigation systems by introducing the new matrix system thereby reducing the labor and also the total amount of necessary for the whole procedure. The process involves the moisture sensor to analyze the amount of moisture in the soil and then if the moisture in the soil is low the processor then produces an output signal that informs the water valve to open and reach the right destination to give the maximum effect. Thus this system gives a very efficient way of irrigating the plants automatically without any human intervention. III. LITERATURE REWIEW 1. Muhammad et al (2010): A simple approach to Irrigation control problem using ArtificialNeural Network Controller. The proposed system is compared with ON/OFF controller and itis shown that ON/OFF Controller based System fails miserably because of its limitations. Onthe other hand ANN based approach has resulted in possible implementation of better andmore efficient control. 2. Kalyan et al (2011): The need for systems that make agriculture easier and more sustainablehas increased within the past few years. The ability to conserve two of the most importantresources of a farmer, water and time, has been the latest challenge. 3. Prisilla et al (2012) : Water is one of nature's most important gifts to mankind, because ofthe increase in population food requirement for human being is also increasing. Over the pastfew decade usage of water 741
2 for irrigation has increased hysterically. Water is polluted due towastage and contaminants in the industries. Saving water is more important. IV.METHODOLOGY The automatic irrigation system was designed to continuously sense the moisture and temperature level of the soil. The system responds appropriately by watering the soil with the exact amount of water required and then shuts down the water supply when the required amount of soil moisture is achieved. The reference amount of soil moisture is already fed to the microcontroller beforehand. This reference soil moisture content was made to be adjustable for the three most common soil types (sandy, loamy and clayey soils).the moisture sensors and temperature sensors were designed using probes made from corrosion resistant material which can be stuck into soil sample. Voltage levels corresponding to the wet and dry status of the soil sample were computed by measuring the resistance between the moisture probes and matching them to output voltage of a comparator circuit. BLOCK DIAGRAM PROPOSAL OF PROJECT The proposal of this project is to provide an automatic water distribution and irrigation system with the help of moisture and a temperature sensor. And also reduce the water consumption using this procedure and the new matrix system. APPLICATION 1. This could be mainly employed in indoor agriculture and also for vertical agriculture. 2. This kind of mechanism may be used in all sorts of agriculture fields and mostly all kinds of plants. 3. This method could also be used in homes to automatically water the plants when anindividual is not at home. 4. The data collected by this method could be used in data analysis to find out how fast moisture depletion takes place and which section requires more water. 5. Therefore, the applications of the method are multiple. CONCLUTION This project provides a significant increase in the advantages to traditional irrigation methods. It provides the water to the soil based on the moisture content of the soil thereby reducing water wastage. It uses a matrix system to reduce both water consumption and excess pipelines. Thus this is a complete improvement to the traditional agricultural irrigation methods and also to previous automated method. REFERENCES 1.
