Engaging Employees beyond the Campaign Diamond Donors Diamond Donors are individuals who have given to any UW for 25 years or more. You can energize your campaign by incorporating Diamond Donors; to share their giving testimony or implement a thank you effort or show appreciation in your employee meetings. Ask individuals to self-identify as a Diamond Donor, & share those names with us. Contact Kathy Briscoe at kbriscoe@uwca.org or for more information, forms, or appreciation certificates. Retirees UWCA s Retiree Program provides your former employees a way to stay connected with your company & active in the community. As seniors, they are one of the fastest-growing segments of our population & often have the greatest capacity & desire to give back to our community. It is easy to get started. Contact Kathy Briscoe at kbriscoe@uwca.org or Visiting Allocation Team Each year UWCA relies on over 500 Visiting Allocation Team (VAT) members to help make decisions about what community programs will be a good investment of United Way dollars. VATs increase program accountability to donors of United Way by requiring agencies to define how donor funds will be spent. Between late September & early November, teams of volunteers convene to discuss agency allocation requests & determine whether funds requested will be a good investment of United Way dollars. Volunteers can register at or contact Randy Betsch at rbetsch@uwca.org or for more information. VAT members are a great addition to your campaign team; identify these leaders to share this community investment process with your employees. Hands On Birmingham's (HOB) mission is to connect people with organized & meaningful volunteer opportunities to improve their community. HOB is a program of United Way of Central Alabama & currently has over 10,500 registered volunteers. HOB managed & recruited 5,100 volunteers in The economic worth of volunteer labor in 2014 translates to $373,473 & 15,300 volunteer service hours. 15 Frequently Asked Questions & Objections Frequently Asked Questions What is United Way? United Way is a nonprofit organization that brings people and communities together to advance a common good. United Way isn t about short-term charity, it s about lasting change. We look at the big picture; what resources are lacking. We identify needs such as food, shelter, health resources, quality education programs and then develop strategies to address those needs. What does United Way do? Our work helps provide the building blocks for a good life for all of us in four areas: Education, Financial Stability, Health and Access to Services. We attack the root causes of a lack of these building blocks by: Helping Children Succeed Supporting early childhood education Promoting Financial Stability Improving housing stability Increasing earnings through sound asset management Serving the community with Free Tax Preparation programs Empowering Healthy Lives Health Care Access Increasing healthy behaviors Reducing hunger

Providing Access to Services Stabilize people in crisis and in times of disasters by providing food, shelter and other essential services Our call center matches callers in need with nonprofits available to help meet those needs Our Priority Veteran program helps homeless and near homeless veterans How is United Way of Central Alabama different from other charities? First, don t think of us as a charity. We think of our work as having broad community impact. Making a gift to United Way is the most effective way to help our whole community. Our unique ability to work across complex issues with hundreds of community partners is unmatched. We mobilize volunteers and convene partner agencies, corporations, community leaders and policymakers to make broad changes like no other organization can do on its own. We address larger, systemic issues in the areas of Education, Financial Stability, Health and Access to Services. We move beyond the individual to work to influence systems. For example, systemic change is moving the needle on having academic access. That would be our work in early childhood education through our Success By 6 Initiatives. Ensuring success at the Pre-K level builds on positive progress through school so that they will graduate and become successful and financially stable adults. Yes, our programs help people in crisis get back on their feet, but we help prevent future problems and build a stronger community for all of us.

What else does Community Impact look like? It s a commitment by United Way and other organizations to establishing long-term community needs, determining how we ll measure success, developing and implementing the right strategies and measuring the results over time. We call it BOLD GOALS. It s a strategy developed by a coalition of local businesses, civic, education, financial, health institutions and nonprofits that work together to address disparities in education, financial stability and health in our region. Their goals are to: Work toward a 90% graduation rate by 2020 with every student prepared for college career or life. Ensure that all Central Alabama counties are ranked in the top 10% for health outcomes by Decrease by 2025 the number of income poor households in central Alabama from 18% to the national average of 14%. Creating lasting, equal, system wide changes takes more than a vision. By directing attention to systemic problems, aligning our community-wide agendas and sharing information and resources, the Coalition is committed to working to together to make our region thrive and succeed. Will this reduce funding to United Way Agencies? No. Many United Way Agencies are part of the coalition and all have been invited to participate. In many cases, United Way partners will be the recipients of strategic funding for programs in the BOLD GOALS effort. Your dollars will be pooled to make an even stronger impact in our community.

We have not abandoned any of our core work or values; rather we added more to achieve the desired result of lasting change. Who runs United Way? Our professional staff works with knowledgeable volunteers from the five counties we serve who represent our diverse community. We have a volunteer board of directors that sets policy and strategic direction. Many volunteer committees oversee financial practices and provide advice on operational tasks. Our president and CEO is Drew Langloh Our chairman of the board is Sam Tortorici, CEO, Cadence Bank, N.A. Our Vice Chairman is Mark Crosswhite, President & CEO, Alabama Power Company Are all United Ways the same? No, there are 1,400 community-based United Ways across the country and each is separately incorporated and independently governed by local volunteers. We pay a voluntary membership contribution for the rights to use the United Way name and logo and support broader community impact goals through United Way Worldwide, an umbrella organization. Decisions about community needs and how to address them are made at the local level.

GIVING OBJECTIONS I don t benefit, so why should I give? You are already benefitting from the services; so is a family member, friend or co worker who may have used the services of a United Way partner agency. But we all share in a better community when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable and when people have good health. When you support United Way, you help build a better life for all of us. I don t want my employees to feel pressured to give through payroll deduction. A payroll deduction program does not mean pressure on employees rather it provides a convenient method for employees to give and receive a tax deduction. United Way of Central Alabama believes that giving is a personal decision. Whether you wish to give and how much you choose to give is your decision. Your gift of any amount is greatly appreciated. I will not pressure my employees/co-workers. No pressure is necessary. All we ask is for the opportunity to tell the United Way story to your employees and invite those who are interested to participate. Again, United Way of Central Alabama believes that giving is a personal decision.

My employees are low paid. Many low wage groups enthusiastically support United Way and have taken great pride in their giving because sometimes they are closer to the problem. Through payroll deduction, employees can give a little bit at a time. What are the advantages of giving through United Way? Giving to United Way is an easy, effective, efficient means to meet your charitable goals. United Way is in the business of advancing the common good by focusing on the basics we all need for a good life. No other organizations provide sustainable funding to support a network of health and human service providers. United Way is the collective power of people working toward long-term solutions that improve lives and community conditions. What are the most pressing issues in our community? United Way is creating a better life for all by focusing on Education, Financial Stability, Health and Access to Emergency Services/Disaster Response. These are basic things that we all need for a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, income that can support a family through retirement, good health and getting access to services in times of a crisis. The uncertain economy now calls for us to concentrate on providing basic needs in these areas. Requests for food, housing assistance, and help with utilities are at an unprecedented level.

I give through my church. Most of us have an obligation to our faith. However, there are many services provided by United Way partners, programs and initiatives that faith based organizations cannot provide. Your church support and your support through United Way will meet even more needs in the community. How much of what I give actually reaches the agencies and can I designate my gift to a particular agency? 91% of all money raised goes to the services impacting the community. We can keep our costs low because of the thousands of volunteer hours donated to United Way. If you decide to designate your gift, please read the giving guidelines printed in our United Way brochure. If you accept these guidelines, write the name of the agency on your pledge card. The agency should acknowledge your contribution. What about agency fundraisers? United Way s allocation provides a consistent level of funding and support for agencies. However, United Way is not their only source of funding so additional fundraising efforts and membership drives are necessary to meet their needs.

Hot Topics We call the following set of issues our Hot Topics because of their potential to be inflammatory. They are issues in the news, rumors, and urban legends. If the topic is brought up at a workplace rally or in normal conversation, it is best to give the person asking the question a simple answer and move on. If they want to discuss the issue further, please refer them to Samuetta Nesbitt, Sr. Vice President, Public Relations and Community Affairs, They can also their concerns to snesbitt@uwca.org. How are the salaries of your top executives determined? There is an inherent expertise needed to lead today s nonprofit organizations to be bold and innovative with the power to make social change. The Board of Directors of United Way of Central Alabama, Inc., made up of community volunteers, believes that managing an $85.6 million organization requires top quality staff. United Way s compensation philosophy is linked to the values of the organization; helping people, accountability, efficiency, and excellence, voluntary giving, integrity and fairness. The Board uses the following guides for setting compensation policies: Our size and growing organization complexity of United Way of Central Alabama The service area, geographic location and financial condition of the organization The qualifications required for the job Compensation at comparable organizations

The Board is committed to full compliance of Section 4958 of the Internal Revenue Code in establishing a reasonable salary structure as a best practice in terms of governance of the organization. Does United Way fund abortions? United Way of Central Alabama does not allocate funds to any organization or initiative that performs abortions. United Way of Central Alabama does not provide financial support to Planned Parenthood. What about United Way Worldwide and other Local United Ways? United Way Worldwide, the leadership and support organization for the network of local United Ways, does not provide financial support to Planned Parenthood. All funding decisions are made by individual United Ways based on local community standards. In those cities where Planned Parenthood does receive support, the programs focus on community health maintenance and strengthening services like counseling and family life education. United Way funds are not currently used or have ever been used to support abortion services. Why is Planned Parenthood listed in the CFC Brochure? The Combined Federal Campaign is not a United Way program. It is a service for Federal employees to make informed, educated decisions about giving to charity and United Way does not contribute to the CFC. The Combined Federal Campaign s policies are determined by the Federal Government and the program information is distributed by United Way. There are thousands of charities listed in the brochure for federal employees to direct their charitable contributions. UWCA does not have any input as to what charities are listed.

What was the recent decision by Boy Scouts on Gay Leaders? In July, the Boy Scouts' National Executive Board removed restrictions on openly gay adult leaders and employees. Chartered organizations will continue to select their adult leaders and religious chartered organizations may continue to use religious beliefs as criteria for selecting adult leaders, including matters of sexuality. For more information on the decision you can see the full explanation on the Boy Scouts of America s website. Does United Way have a position on this decision? United Way of Central Alabama has not taken a position. We will continue to fund scouting programs. Our stand is for the thousands of local boys and girls, many of them at-risk. They will, greatly benefit from scouting s proven record of programs that foster self-esteem, build discipline and teach personal responsibility. United Way has a long history of support for scouting. United Way s 2014 allocation to our two local Boy Scout Councils totaled over $1 million. What happened to the United Way President who stole money from United Way? (This is a 20 year old issue that continues to surface) You are referring to William Aramony who was President of United Way of America. In 1995, he was convicted of various counts of conspiracy, fraud and filing false tax returns. He was sentenced to 84 months in prison, which he served. After his release on October 2, 2001, he was sentenced to three years of supervised release and fined $300,000. Mr. Aramony died in November of 2011.

Why Is United Way of Central Alabama and other nonprofits against SB24? United Way of Central Alabama along with other nonprofits in Alabama feel the bill will have tremendous financial setbacks to nonprofits in the state. Governor Bentley signed SB 24 which requires nonprofits that qualify for sales tax exemptions to obtain a yearly certificate from the Department of Revenue. The sponsor promoted this bill as a way to make sure that nonprofits are not abusing their tax exempt status. In reality, this bill would require all United Ways and their agencies to file reports annually with the Department of Revenue detailing tax exempt transactions. Nonprofits will have to develop new accounting systems, purchase software to manage the reporting and hire personnel to track all transactions. This will divert much needed funds from client programs. In signing the bill, Governor Bentley asked the Department of Revenue to create a Tax Exemption Advisory Council. The Council will be chaired by the Commissioner of Revenue, who will also appoint members. We are pleased nonprofits will have input in drafting the regulations. United Way (UWCA) will continue working with the Alabama Association of Nonprofits (AAN), United Ways of Alabama, and the members of our UWCA federation to develop strategies moving forward. We hope we will have an opportunity to work with the Alabama Department of Revenue to develop regulations related to this new law that will protect the interest of nonprofits in the state.
