Registers can be provided as part of an advanced estate management IT system or simply as a singular report in a digital or paper copy. Whatever your requirements you can rest assured our staff shall find a suitable format that meets the demands of your organisation. Many organisations spend vital resources having surveys conducted and then implement elaborate management systems only to allow the data collated to become out dated through a failure to audit the Asbestos items identified. 5 Indoor Air Quality Is Indoor Air Quality an issue in your workplace? Around 80% of our annual exposure to air pollution arises from exposure indoors. For groups such as the elderly and children, who spend a lot of time indoors, this can be nearer 90%. We work with a variety of organisations such as hospitals, care homes, hotels and industrial units to ensure that their workforce, patients and customers are provided with a safe environment. By assessing your indoor air quality not only will you breath easy knowing that you comply with legislation and have ensured that your building is free of harmful substances but the users of your premises will also be free to breath easy. Organisations that put steps in place to improve their internal air quality benefit from increased productivity and less sickness. Sick Building Syndrome Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is a combination of ailments such as irritation of the eyes, throat, skin, headaches or other general health problems. It is possible for an organisations workforce to report problems that seem unconnected but that, in actual fact, are linked to the building. Symptoms usually recede once the person has left the room or building. More often than not sick building syndrome is caused by poor air quality. The Health and Safety Executive recommends conducting an employee survey to see if the occurrence of symptoms is higher than expected. There may be causes that can be easily fixed. To meet with HSE requirements and to ensure your workforce do not suffer contact us to learn more and arrange an assessment. Can you please pass on my thanks and gratitude to all the staff involved in the recent project at our hospital, their professional and considered approach proved invaluable. Paul Sly (Estates Manager), Birmingham PCT NHS Typical characteristics such as carbon dioxide, dust levels, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ozone and a range of biological agents have adverse effects on staff working in an environment. Our occupational safety consultants are trained and experienced to identify and test for a range of these characteristics. 7 8
6 Workplace Exposure How do you monitor the working conditions and exposure risks for your workforce? Workplace COSHH Every year, thousands of workers are made ill by hazardous substances exposure, contracting lung disease such as asthma, cancer and skin disease such as dermatitis. As an employer, you are responsible for taking effective measures to control exposure to hazardous substances and protect health. These measures can also improve production or cut waste. Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (as amended) Employers are required to protect both employees and others who may be exposed to hazardous substances by ensuring that monitoring procedures are in place to ensure their safety. Many thousands of substances are used at work but only about 500 substances have Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs). How do I know if exposures are below the Legal Limits? You can only do this by monitoring. This means measuring the substance in the air that the worker breathes while the task is underway this requires a survey to assess people s exposure to substances in workplace air, and discover how and why this exposure happens. Personal sampling is taking an air sample near the worker s breathing zone to measure the amounts of airborne substances inhaled for a stated task. Workplace exposure testing is required for the following reasons: To enable COSHH assessments to be prepared To check exposure controls are working To help select appropriate RPE Such Hazardous substances include: Substances used directly in work activities (e.g. Adhesives, Paints, Cleaning Agents, Solvents) Substances generated during work activities (e.g. Metal Particulate fumes from soldering & welding) Naturally Occurring Substances (e.g. Dusts, Crystalline Silica) hazardous Biological Agents (e.g. Bacteria, Moulds) Our consultants are here to help you and can develop and implement monitoring strategies to ensure maximum exposure limits are not exceeded with respect to hazardous substances used in the workplace or arising from your working activities. Our team will advise on appropriate measures to be taken to reduce the risk of exposure to hazardous substances and ensure you comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations. I write to thank you on behalf of the Northern Safety Practitioner Groups for the excellent health and safety presentation at the prison service college. This was a valuable insight for many of the members and a useful refresher for others. I hope we will have further dealings in the future. Home Office (HMP Wealstun): M J Suggitt, Health & Safety Manager 9 10
7 Occupational Noise Are you completely familiar with all the requirements of the Noise Regulations? 5 Steps to noise management You may want to ensure your staff are protected, your planning permission is granted or you are able to sell your property. Whatever your needs our noise services provide you with the right results. According to the Health and Safety Executive over one million employees in Great Britain are exposed to levels of noise that put hearing at risk. Step 1 Establish whether there are any hazards within the workplace by conducting a preliminary assessment based upon knowledge of current working practises. You may wish to carry out some basic noise measurements using a suitably calibrated sound level meter to assist you in this measurement Step 2 Once areas of potential hazards have been identified it is important to identify which employees may be at risk and evaluate precisely how the harm may have occurred for example deafness, damage to hearing, impaired communication. Step 3 Once particular work routines have been determined individual noise measurements can be carried out to assess the typical exposures of those at risk. There are two options for conducting these measurements; the first is the use of an integrated average sound level meter. The second type of monitoring utilises a dose meter which can be worn by the worker during their entire shift. This is particularly useful as the dose meter can be worn for whatever the workers pattern of work wherever they are located. For example; when staff move around a lot or work in difficult to access spaces. Once all the measurements have been made a noise control action plan needs to be compiled. Step 4 A report should be compiled providing evidence of the decision taken to comply with the law; this should include findings of the noise survey, identification of the extent of noise hazard areas, details of warning signs placement. Prescription of suitable hearing protection, details of training programmes, quiet purchasing policies, health surveillance records and measurements to control noise without the reliance of hearing protection Step 5 The noise control programme should be reviewed regularly to take account of new equipment and changes in working patterns and building layout. In a claim culture it is essential organisations comply with their legal duties as defined in the control of noise regulations. Workplace noise Ensuring your workplace complies makes certain that you reduce the likelihood of claims and enables you to protect your staff and increase productivity. We have helped clients in a variety of industry sectors from the leisure industry through to large manufacturing and engineering companies to ensure that their noise levels are reduced and/or controlled. 8 Legionella Maintaining safe water systems is essential in ensuring not only the health and safety of building occupants, but those people in the vicinity of the building, as well as maintaining legal compliance. Legionnella bacteria occurs naturally in surface water and soils etc but can also proliferate within man made environments such as cooling towers, hot and cold distribution systems, water plant, humidifiers and air washers. Proliferation of the bacteria typically occurs between 20oC 45oC and is assisted by the presence of suitable nutrients present in dirt, sludge and Scale as well as conditions of poor water flow, stagnation or where dead legs occur in water systems. Due to the excellent service you have provided over the last 7 years we would like to request an extension to our current contract. Phil Broadhurst, Procurement Manager South Yorkshire Police Legionella Training Water System Risks Assessments Stored water, drinking water, process water, closed systems are all covered by the AcoP L8 water quality regulations. Therefore, to safely manage your water quality it is vital that these water systems are properly assessed for their water quality risk. Euro Environmental s legionella consultants will provide a comprehensive water risk assessment of your water systems. The legionella risk assessment will enable you to choose the correct course of action. Employers are required to control the risk of exposure to legionella bacteria in accordance with Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. This is achieved by following the Approved Code of Practice (AcoP) L8 The Control of Legionella (Bacteria in Water Systems) in general these require the employer to conduct the following: Identification & assessment of the legionella risk Prevention or minimisation of risk from exposure to legionella Systems for the management and selection, training and competence of personnel Record keeping of maintenance, cleaning and disinfection Download our online legionella podcast to learn more: /podcasts.php Our training courses are proving extremely popular. They ensure your staff are fully aware of the hazards associated with legionella and provide them with the knowledge and tools to manage the risk effectively. Please see our website for further details. Should you have several members of staff we can deliver an in-house tailored courses at your premises. Your site s water quality standards will be assessed and you will be given a no obligation water quality improvement strategy complete with schematic drawings of your water systems. Our meticulous water quality experts will provide an easy to interpret water quality standards report which will advise on the best solution for minimising the risks associated with legionella. Our legionella risk assessment experts will also offer a comprehensive range of remedial services and water safety solutions. By using our expert legionella services you can take the effort out of managing your water quality. Euro Environmental hold Legionella Control Association accreditation providing our clients with confidence in the high standards of service we provide 13 14
9 Euro Environmental can ensure that your organistation continues to comply with ACoP L8 by providing long term monitoring solutions Following the recommendations provided within a risk assessment Euro Environmental Ltd can work with you to ensure you continue to meet the ongoing requirements of ACoP L8 by providing legionella water treatment services such as system cleans and disinfections to ongoing monthly / quarterly / annual & bi-annual monitoring. Microbiological Sampling and Analysis - Sampling for all types of bacteria including Legionella, E-Coli and coli forms can be undertaken and analysis conducted by a UKAS accredited laboratory. The presence of contamination in a cold water tank increases the likelihood that legionella and other bacteria are present in a water system, it is therefore important that systems are kept clean. Euro Environmental work to the highest standards to provide effective water treatment disinfections of cold water services. We have highly experienced staff on hand to deliver both thermal and chemical disinfections of systems in need of maintenance.
