1 SWOT Analysis and Nelson Mandela Day Information Definitions for SWOT Analysis Strengths and weaknesses are often internal to your organization, while opportunities and threats generally relate to external factors. Strengths What advantages does your group have? What do you do better than anyone else? What unique or lowest-cost resources can you draw upon that others can't? What do people in your community see as your strengths? Consider your strengths from both an internal perspective, and from the point of view of your customers and people in your community. Also, if you're having any difficulty identifying strengths, try writing down a list of your organization's characteristics. Some of these will hopefully be strengths! When looking at your strengths, think about them in relation to others. Weaknesses What could you improve? What should you avoid? What are people in your community likely to see as weaknesses? Again, consider this from an internal and external basis: Do other people seem to perceive weaknesses that you don't see? Are your other groups doing any better than you? It's best to be realistic now, and face any unpleasant truths as soon as possible. Opportunities What good opportunities can you spot? What interesting trends are you aware of? Useful opportunities can come from such things as: o Changes in technology o Changes in government policy o Changes in social patterns, population profiles, lifestyle changes, and so on o Local events A useful approach when looking at opportunities is to look at your strengths and ask yourself whether these open up any opportunities.
2 Alternatively, look at your weaknesses and ask yourself whether you could open up opportunities by eliminating them. Threats What obstacles do you face? What are others doing? Is changing technology threatening your group? Do you have bad debt or cash-flow problems? Could any of your weaknesses seriously threaten your business? Resolution Establishing Task Force and Mandate Approved at the Special City Council meeting of December 9, 2013: Nelson Mandela Day in Brantford July 18, 2014 WHEREAS the City of Brantford shares the sorrow felt by South Africa and the world as we all mourn the loss of former president and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela; and WHEREAS Nelson Mandela was a visionary leader and a model of courage and determination in times of adversity; and WHEREAS the world watched in awe and admiration as he fought against remarkable odds for freedom, justice and equality; and WHEREAS Nelson Mandela led South Africa toward a healthy democracy with full participation by all members of society, notably through the establishment of democratic, accountable, and effective local self-governance principles which were entrenched in the South African constitution; and WHEREAS Nelson Mandela will be sorely missed, his legacy lives on in our hearts and in the spirit of friendship and cooperation he worked so hard to foster; and WHEREAS municipalities from across Canada are honouring this spirit by creating opportunities for citizens to reflect on Nelson Mandela s life of service and the values he embodied (which include activities for schoolchildren, letters, resolutions to council, books of condolence and community memorials); NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the City of Brantford DECLARE July 18 as Nelson Mandela Day in Brantford and encourage citizens to devote 67 minutes of their time to helping others, in recognition of the 67 years Mr. Mandela dedicated to public service; and
3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT an Ad hoc Committee, comprised of Councillors Ceschi-Smith, Neumann, Utley, Carpenter and Vanderstelt, BE ESTABLISHED to plan for the 2014 Nelson Mandela Day in our community; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT during this week of mourning, a memorial book of condolences BE PLACED in the City Council foyer, inviting residents and visitors to make comments and sign; and THAT a copy of this resolution BE FORWARDED to Dave Levac, MPP, Brant, Phil McColeman, MP, Brant, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).
