2 Building Construction Technology Program Goals Building Construction Technology 1-7 is an exploration of the fundamentals of all facets of Construction Industry. This class is designed for high school and adult students who want to explore building construction as a possible career. The goal of this class is to introduce student trainee s to the Construction Industry and help develop the skills, work habits, and attitudes that are necessary for entry level employment in the trade, apprenticeship or advanced placement post-secondary or college level program. To help reach this goal, we have developed this syllabus as a guide, providing students with much of the information necessary to succeed in the class. Please read and study the following information carefully, for knowing this information and practicing it in class is essential to your progress. Your full cooperation in observing all of the policies and procedures of the course is required not only for educational success, but for your safety and the safety of your fellow students. If you have any questions about the policies and procedures of this class, please do not hesitate to ask your instructor as soon as possible. American Disability Act If you need course adaptations or special accommodations because of a disability, need special accommodation in case of a building evacuation, or have medical information that we should know in case of an emergency, please let your instructor know immediately so that we may help you. COURSE DESCRIPTION Building Construction Technology / Syllabus A variable credit course designed for high school and adult construction students. Construction Technology presents fundamental principals of basic residential and commercial construction. Student completers receive Industry Certification for the appropriate certification level by the National Center for Construction Education and Research. Building Construction Technology training is open entry and open exit and includes OCP s for High School course credit. Content will include: safety, building codes and permits, formwork, handling concrete, masonry units, framing, finishing, electrical wiring, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning. Students will become familiar with carpentry tools, construction tools, and instruments as well as with the processes involved in carpentry. Safety is stressed throughout the course. Workplace ethics to include attendance, punctuality, efficiency, and good housekeeping will be an integral part of all instruction. Certificate of completion is awarded to students completing required OCP,s. PREREQUISITES See a RIVEROAK TECHNICAL COLLEGE counselor

4 37.0 Build stairs Troubleshoot, repair and install plumbing systems Demonstrate knowledge of drain, waste and vent (DWV) systems Measure, cut and join plastic piping Properly measure, ream, cut and join copper piping Troubleshoot, repair and install electrical systems Demonstrate electrical safety Demonstrate a basic understanding of the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Cooling (HVAC) profession Maintain, repair and install Heating, Ventilation and Air-Cooling (HVAC) systems. Throughout the course student's progress will be measured by their ability to complete numerous tasks and competencies to a level of industry standard deemed appropriate by the instructor. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES Supervised hands-on practice on modular projects and community/school projects supplemented with lecture, field trips, guest speakers, small group discussion, and academic text work. Instructional delivery includes online an online Blended Classroom. EVALUATION - Grading and credits earned Grades determined as follows: Projects both individual and corporate = 25% Module Tests and weekly quizzes = 25% Participation including Attendance, preparedness, work readiness and safe work habits = 25% Assignments = 25% Credits: Credits and Certificates awarded will depend on the percentage of tasks and competencies completed to industry standards as determined by the instructor and NCCER. OTHER LEARNING OUTCOMES As students work on mastering the skills and competencies associated with this class, certain other outcomes identified by RIVEROAK Technical College will be stressed. They include: Responsibility Students will practice responsibility through their willingness and ability to follow stated program policies and expectations such as: * Adherence to attendance system

5 * Ability to keep track of, and complete required assignments and tasks independently * Willingness to abide by and apply safe working practices * Abiding by all RTC program rules and policies Critical Thinking * Students will demonstrate critical thinking through their ability to find, devise, and decide upon effective construction plans and procedures as well as determine the correct tools and equipment for the job, and communicate the reasons for their strategies either verbally or in writing Aesthetic Awareness Students will demonstrate aesthetic awareness as it applies to the industry by: * Recognizing the appearance and aesthetics of good craftsmanship, as well as demonstrating good craftsmanship by attempting to complete the tasks associated with this class to higher than minimum level of industry standard as interpreted by the instructor * By demonstrating a heightened awareness of, and an increased respect for the environment through proper handling of hazardous materials as outlined in course materials * By maintaining a clean, safe, and professional looking work area; hence an attractive shop RIVEROAK TECHNICAL COLLEGE - Building Technology

6 Grade Worksheet Performance Competency The rubric scale used to determine number of points earned by student is as follows: 0: Unsuccessful attempt unable to meet knowledge or performance criteria and/or required significant assistance. 1: Partial demonstration met some of the knowledge or performance criteria with or without minor assistance. 2: Knowledge demonstrated met knowledge criteria without assistance at least once. 3: Performance demonstrated met performance criteria without assistance at least once. 4: Repetitive demonstration met performance and or knowledge criteria without assistance on multiple occasions. 5: Mastered successfully applied knowledge or skills in this area to solve related problems independently. COMPLETION OF WORK BOOK ASSIGNMENTS = 25% of grade, 25 points possible. Completion of all work book assignments when due, in a neat and orderly manor, equals 25% of grade number of points 25 Tests and quizzes = 25% of grade, 25 points possible. Students are allowed to make up failed test and the final test grade for that test will be the average of the failed test and the make-up test for RTC test grade purposes. NCCER only requires a 70% pass for national certification. A student is not allowed to make up quizzes for an unexcused absent or tardiness. Personal and Corporate Projects = 25% of grade, 25 points possible. Participation = 25% OF GRADE, 25 points possible. Attendance is an important key to your successful completion of this program. Unexcused absences result in a 0 daily participation grade. Assignments = 25% OF GRADE, 25 points possible. This includes text assignments, individual assignments, practice assignments and other assignments the instructor assigns for competency training and verification for individual level. The criterion for this aspect of your evaluation reflects the skills and habits you must demonstrate in order to become a successful employee or business owner.

7 About Your Instructor Your Instructor is Bob Makela. Since serving as an Interior communications electrician aboard a US Sub, Bob has worked in the electrical highline and power distribution Industry including underground utilities and heavy equipment operation. Bob has been a business owner, subcontractor and registered building contractor for 30+ years and has also been involved with the Suwannee Builders Association for several years. Your instructor is currently a board member of the Suwannee County Board of Adjustments and Zoning. Bob is committed to your success in this class. Instructors Expectations * If you are going to be absent, please let your instructor know in advance or call in * Come to class prepared and ready to work * You are required to be on time each day * You are expected to act according to the Workplace ethics described in this syllabus * You are expected to actively participate in class * You must abide by all safety rules and procedures * You are expected to do all assignments and turn them in when due * You are required to keep track of your completed tasks and have your instructor sign them off on a

8 weekly basis * You are expected to let your instructor know of any special needs you may have * You are expected to ask your instructor questions pertaining to class when you have them * You are expected to try your best * You are expected to have fun!!! Overall, your instructor will expect of you the same behavior as an employer would expect of an employee. Shop Clean Up Approximately 15 minutes before class ends, we will stop all activities, re-organize and clean up the shop. Typically the last day of class every quarter will be devoted to clean up. Shop Projects One of the goals of this class is to train students for entry level employment in layout, construction, and repair of residential and commercial buildings. We feel that working on individual and community projects is one of the best ways to prepare for the construction trades. Therefore a large part of your hands-on instruction in this class will be performed on both individual and community/school building projects. Your instructor will arrange for shop projects that coincide with the instruction and the objectives of the class. The materials for instructional projects will be provided by RTC, Lab Fees or donated materials. Please note that all student projects must have instructor permission and all materials, supplies, and parts, will be paid for by the student. Additionally, there are several State, Local School Board, and Program regulations that pertain to what constitutes a shop project. Repair work on customer projects will involve a shop rate charge above and beyond the costs of materials and supplies. Absences We understand that things happen and there may be a time when you can t make it to class. It is very important you let your instructor know when you will be late or absent. It is also your responsibility to talk to your instructor regarding make up of lost time. Opportunities for make up are not guaranteed and your instructor will consider them on a case by case basis. Class Hours and Days

9 Class and shop hours are from 8:00 to 3:15 daily and will be on 18 week semester schedule with some single period classes. CONTACT INFORMATION Contact Instructor during class hours and/or special request appointment time Student Parking Students are required to obtain a parking permit for their vehicle at the campus office in the administration building. Absolutely no student parking is permitted within the Trades compound. Violators will be ticketed. There is handicapped parking located Smoking Smoking is prohibited at RTC per Suwannee school board policy. Use of Phone The extension in the BCT shop is This phone is for class business and emergency use only. Please refrain from making personal calls while in class. Personal cell phones are to be shut off and not visible during class time or they will be confiscated. A parent or guardian must come to the school for a confiscated phone. A student that does not surrender a phone to an instructor will be automatically suspended. For safety reasons, I pods and other electronic devices are not allowed in the Construction Technology Class. Class Visitors For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to have friends visit during class hours without instructor permission. Restroom The men s restroom is located in the shop. Presently, the closest women s restroom is located across the hall in the administration area. Lab Work Approximately 75% of your class time will be comprised of working on various shop projects and most of that time you will be working in small student work groups. No students will be allowed to work in the shop without the regular shop instructor or authorized shop assistant present. Students must agree not to use tools without proper training by the BCT instructor. Safety Your safety is of the utmost importance in this class. We will provide you with basic safety equipment and instruct you in the proper use and procedure. It is your responsibility to use the equipment properly and abide by all safety policies and procedures.

10 You are required to wear safety glasses at all times in the shop area. This includes whether you are working on a shop project or not! We will issue you one (1) pair of safety glasses (or goggles if you prefer). You are required to take care of them and if you lose them, you must purchase replacements. Prescription glasses wearers can opt to purchase prescription safety glasses but they must be regulation safety glasses: We will provide you with one (1) pair of hearing protectors. You are required to wear hearing protectors at all appropriate times. Loss will dictate you purchase a replacement pair. You will also be supplied with various types of respirators (particle masks and organic respirators), and will be instructed in their use. Appropriate clothing and attire For your safety and comfort, you will be required to wear appropriate work clothes. These would include: * Long pants (jeans, khakis, etc.); no nylon or polyester materials * Socks * Leather shoes (high tops are preferred, leather basketball shoes are OK, No sandals! * Shirts (preferably long sleeve). Coveralls are recommended but not required Hair must be kept out of harms way. Loose jewelry, like necklaces and bracelets are prohibited. Rings and watches are not a good idea. Tools and Equipment You are not required to purchase any tools or equipment for this class. However, it is your responsibility to correctly use and take care of the school's equipment. You will be instructed in the use and care of tools and equipment.. UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED IN THE PROPER AND SAFE USE, DO NOT USE ANY OF OUR TOOLS OR EQUIPMENT! You are not allowed to use personal tools on school premises without instructor approval because of school liability. All tools and equipment will be returned to their appropriate place when you are done using them at the end of each class session!

11 Workplace Ethics It is the policy of RTC that proper work place ethics be an integral part of your training. Our definition of the work place ethics you will be evaluated on are as follows: * Positive attitude * Good attendance * Preparation for class * Safe and efficient work habits * Respect for the school's property and the property of others * Respect and tolerance for peers * Respect for cultural and ethnic diversity * Respect for and adherence to all Federal, State, and local laws * Abiding by school and course rules and policies It is the policy of RTC and this class that no sexual harassment of any kind will be tolerated. Plagiarism/Cheating Any student that knowingly cheats, commits plagiarism, or falsely represents a work project to the faculty as the students work produce, in whole or in part, shall be subject to discipline. Also any student that aids or abets in an act of cheating, shall also be subject to discipline.

12 TIPS FOR SUCCESS 1. Ask a lot of questions, especially right when they come up. 2. Don t try to develop an extreme problem just to prove your instructor doesn t have all the answers, he doesn t. 3. Paraphrase your teacher s instructions (repeat them back to him in your own words). 4. Request an example. 5. Apply plain, common sense to everything you do. 6. Don t close your mind. Go ahead and try it. 7. Try to help or tutor others in the class. You ll learn as much or more than them. 8. Remember that your instructors purpose for being there is to help you learn and that he makes mistakes too. 9. Work hard and play hard. 10. Have FUN!
