2 Business Solutions 2 Summary Marvell is a world leader in complete silicon solutions. The ability to communicate and implement ideas are key to innovation and results. Marvell s Talent Development & Organization Effectiveness team identified a lack of Business English competency as an opportunity to target a talent gap while supporting organizational communication. Marvel subscribers are selected by management, given requirements for time in the system, while managers use Pearson English Business Solutions* on-demand reporting system to track employee progress. Employees view access to Pearson English Business Solutions* as a benefit and opportunity for personal and professional growth. As a company it was clear that the ability to communicate new ideas and tactically implement them would be a key ingredient to successful innovation and financial results. Across the globe, Marvell employs more than 7,000 employees and a significant amount of Marvell s employees are non-native English speakers. These employees receive direct English performance support that helps them share innovative ideas that will enable a leader in the semiconductor and mobile technology industry to stay ahead of the competition. Germany When English is not your first language and you re required to read and respond to official documents in English, it s easy for pressure, confusion, miscommunication, inaccuracies and time for corrections to build up and reduce operational efficiency. Marvell s Talent Development & Organization Effectiveness team identified a lack of Business English competency as an opportunity to target a critical talent gap while supporting organizational agility through improved communication. As a by-product of more effective communications, the initiative would also solidify Marvell s status as a leading innovator and industry leader. The Approach: Meet Pearson English Business Solutions* As a company, Marvell prides itself on rapid advancement by leveraging the latest technology innovations. Its selection of Pearson English Business Solutions* in 2010 was very much in line with this approach. By 2012, Marvell was using this leading ondemand Business English language learning provider to deploy and deliver high impact learning solutions to employees in seven countries. Marvell needed a cloud-based solution that could easily scale across the globe to increase the speed and accuracy of implementation, and reach employees when and where they had the opportunity to learn, practice and apply their skills. Marvell s goal was for employees not only to improve their skills over time, but also to apply their new skills to their jobs immediately for measurable productivity gains. Additionally, the solution was required to garner significant cost savings compared to traditional classroom training in order to justify the company s investment. The award-winning Pearson English Business Solutions* Suite provides complete support for Marvell employees at all skill levels from assessment of current proficiency, to highly engaging, multi-media instruction, and reliable performance support tools. English is taught in the context of relevant business situations, with significant focus on meaningful cultural contexts, so it is highly relevant and applicable for use in business, independent of location.

4 Business Solutions 4 With the program we can study comprehensively with grammar, listening, writing, and the like. One lesson requires a short amount of time, so I can complete it when I have spare time available. Evidence of growing Business English competency as a result of the Pearson English Business Solutions* program quickly emerged at Marvell. Employee surveys, reports demonstrating time on site, learning level attainment, and count of specific business situation activities completed, consistently demonstrate that Marvell employees are engaged and committed to skills improvement. Employees saw an improvement in day-to-day work tasks almost immediately their ability to perform projects more quickly and to communicate strategically within in their division and company improved. How Marvell makes Pearson English Business Solutions* work in : Selection, Motivation, and Evidence Marvell subsidiaries in (Marvell ) have the largest group of employees subscribed to Pearson English Business Solutions*. Each of the 204 subscribers were selected by their managers, based on their job role and learning needs of English. Marvell set a usage requirement of three hours of study per month per subscriber, and managers used Pearson English Business Solutions * on-demand dynamic reporting system to track individual and group progress in the program. Weekly and monthly reports were also sent regularly to management to monitor and assist in progress. And automatic s continue to be sent from managers to employees to remind them of usage expectations and the benefits of English to their performance. Marvell employees view the Pearson English Business Solutions* program as a privilege and a benefit because: It improves their English while they re working and it s available for use after work hours at home The sign up process is easy and it s paid for by the company so they don t have to pay for expensive classes on their own and then expense it They know they re investing in their career and that the more time they spend in the system the better their Business English will be The Results: Improved Business English communication & return on investment Agree that Pearson English Business Solutions* has helped them improve their English communication at work. Agree that Pearson English Business Solutions* is relevant to their job. Indicate that they have been able to use what they have learned in Pearson English Business Solutions* on the job. Overall Marvell employees report: 92% 85% 93% They have saved up to 2.4 hours a week with better Business English skills on conference calls, in s, presentations and more The projected productivity gain shows a companywide savings of 32,076 hours per year, assuming 297 employees are working 45 weeks per year Conservatively assuming that the employee cost per hour is $10, the total estimated productivity gain through improved communication and collaboration in Business English is $320,760 per year One of the most successful motivational programs implemented was the Top 10 recognition program. Its aim was to motivate employees and help them feel pride in their success. High-performing employees with the greatest number of study hours or activities completed were positively recognized at formal events, and they became role models for other subscribers.
