2 Welcome & Thank You V.E.P. ORIENTATION Purpose & Mission: Volunteers in RPS help maximize learning, personal growth for students, assisting teachers by providing enriching experiences, and contributing to a safe and welcoming learning community. Definition of a Volunteer: A parent, grandparent, guardian, or community member who works in a school in a non-paid manner on a regular or one-time basis. Classroom, media center, cafeteria assistant Special project assistant Front office assistant
3 Volunteer-Focused Personnel within RPS: Each volunteer will be assigned to a supervising staff member Each school has an administration designated volunteer liaison who interviews, places, and organizes volunteer recognition efforts for the school s volunteers Volunteer Responsibilities: Review the handbook (p.5) Complete Application Be prompt and follow guidelines RPS Staff Responsibilities: Review the handbook (p.5) Be warm and welcoming to the volunteer Have clear and intentional volunteer tasks

Schedule an interview with the specific school of choice & sign into Raptor! Attend a scheduled orientation session, if the school offers it! RPS Application Process for Groups! Log on to HandsOn Greater Richmond and search for RPS volunteer opportunities! Sign up for a project listed on the HandsOn Greater Richmond website & Register to Volunteer! Once at the school, sign into Raptor, if the project is during regular school hours and school aged children are present

6 ! Communication: V.E.P. ORIENTATION! Share your interests, skills, and availability on your application and throughout! Update your contact information with RPS and in Raptor! Notify the Office of Community Partnerships, if a change in your clearance status occurs! Communicate regularly with supervising staff member
7 ! Classroom Tips for Volunteers: V.E.P. ORIENTATION! Take a personal interest in helping teachers and students! Arrive with a positive and adaptable attitude! Teachers are responsible for instruction and discipline! Be sensitive to different cultures, learning styles, student motivation, and other differences! Be sensitive to different developmental stages and behavior issues! Follow the district policies and procedures for field trips and all other matters! RPS isn t responsible for injury or property damage while traveling to and from or during volunteer opportunity! Please leave all personal items at home
8 ! School Rules:! Volunteers must sign and out of Raptor in the Main Office at each visit! Volunteer must wear a Visitor badge at all times! Volunteers must follow the dress code! Volunteers must follow the cell phone policy! Smoking and the use of tobacco is prohibited on school property! Please do not bring guests during your volunteer opportunity! Please follow all school district policies and procedures. These are located on the Office of Community Partnership s webpage.
9 ! Volunteer Attendance and Tardiness:! Plan ahead by letting your RPS supervisor know in advance if you will not be at your regularly scheduled volunteer shift! If you are feeling ill, please contact your RSP supervisor and stay home! Please be on time for your volunteer shift
10 ! Confidentiality, Reporting, & Boundaries! Volunteers should not be left to supervise students without and RPS teacher or staff member present.! Always be in open space with students and never behind closed doors.! Alert the Designated School Personnel (DSP) immediately, if you suspect child abuse.! Do not give out personal contact information.! Do not engage students on any social media.! Follow all RPS policies and procedures.! It is the teacher s responsibility to discipline students.! All student records and personal information must remain confidential.
