2 What is an Applicant Tracking System? (ATS) Recruiting software that uses algorithms to process and scan resumes Higher score = higher chance of an interview Lower score = low chance of an interview
3 Why do companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS)? Fast and easy to use Saves money and time reviewing resumes Customizable for each job posting Perfect employee: never gets sick, works on holidays, never takes vacation, does the work of at least 4 people Tracks hiring metrics: source of applicants, # of hires, open positions, length of fill/opening Assists with onboarding (e.g., background checks, direct deposit, training schedules, etc.) Simplifies the recruitment lifecycle by automating the hiring process

5 Employer View of ATS Dashboard Employers may not see your resume automatically Your resume has the potential to be viewed if an employer sees a high score on the ATS dashboard
6 Brands of Applicant Tracking Systems Want to know what ATS a company is using? Look at the URL of the online application to determine which ATS is being used. Example: com/ats/careersite/login. aspx?returnurl=/ats/care ersite/applicationstart.as px?id=89&c=waubonsee & Waubonsee uses an ATS called Cornerstone OnDemand (CSOD)
7 Tips for a Higher ATS Score DO: Reference the Sample Resume provided by the Career Development Center at Use headlines (e.g., Nurse or Graphic Designer ) instead of the word summary Use traditional section headlines such as: Education, Professional Experience, Technical Skills, Volunteer Work, etc. Place employer name, City, State, and dates of employment on single line Use Microsoft Word (save as.doc) ATS generally do not read PDFs
8 Tips for a Higher ATS Score (Continued) DON T Use text boxes, graphics, fancy fonts, graphs, tables, columns, headers/footers. These may disappear when put in an ATS and can negatively impact your overall ATS score. Use a template Put your degree or credentials after your name: ATS may read this as your last name. o Example: Rose Bud, LPC o The ATS may now think Rose s last name is LPC

10 ATS & Keywords Be sure to incorporate words from the job description, mission statements, company values into your resume When listing technical skills, include SPECIFIC system names Instead of listing soft skills (teamwork, initiative, problem-solving) in a separate heading, incorporate them into your descriptive bullet points Keep relevant information near the top of your resume Consider how many times you use the keyword throughout your resume as repetition may increase your ATS score Begin each bullet point with an Action Verb
