Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands MUHAS Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania IMPACT OF REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICES ON SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: CONNECTING EVIDENCE AT MACRO, MESO AND MICRO-LEVEL
Implementing institutions 1. Radboud University Nijmegen: - CIDIN (Centre for Development Studies) - NUMC, Dept. of Public Health - Fac. of Management Sciences, NICE 2. MUHAS (Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences) 3. (allied) Dar-es-Salaam University, Dept. of Sociology
Participating Researchers PROJECT MANAGERS Dr Switbert Kamazima, MUHAS; Prof. Dr Ruerd Ruben, CIDIN PROJECT SUPERVISORS Dr Rob Baltussen, NUMC; Dr Jeroen Smits, NICE POST-DOC RESEARCHERS Dr Ben d Exelle, CIDIN; Dr Evert Ketting, NUMC; Dr Datius Rweyemamu, Univ. of Dar-es-Salaam PhD RESEARCHERS Mrs Abiba Lincy (Malawi), Mr Dereck Chitama (Tanzania), Mrs Idda Mosha (Tanzania)
Main Research Questions 1. What is the impact of specified P/RH investments on economic and social variables at the district, community and household level in sub-saharan African countries? 2. Which types of investments and organisational models of P/RH programmes contribute to improved social and economic conditions at the district, community and household level? 3. How can externalities and complementarities from P/RH investments be used for the development of integrated P/RH policies and programmes, which also contribute to improvements in economic conditions and developmental potentials at the district, community and household level?

5 sub-projects 1. District reproductive health investments and poverty reduction in 32 Sub-Saharan African countries 2. Impact of reproductive health services on socioeconomic variables in Kagera, Tanzania 3. P/RH Impact on investment incentives and risk attitudes 4. Micro-macro simulation and policy impact of P/RH programmes 5. Comparative impact assessment of multiple RH service channels
Sub-Project 1: District RH investments Household-level wealth and growth related to district-level investments in P/RH - controlling for other relevant characteristics. This enables to get insight in: 1. which investments in P/RH are most effective to reduce regional poverty and generate growth, 2. which P/RH services are most effective in reaching their target population, and which barriers reduce their accessibility 3. which P/RH services are most critical for generating household health and wealth and how is their effectiveness mediated by access and use.
Sub-Project 2: Kagera region study 2 main research questions: 1. What is the impact of P/RH services on social and economic variables at household and community level? 2. Which factors determine the effective use of P/RH services, P/RH status, and SES of households and communities, and what is the underlying process? A panel database enables cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis on changes over time, and contributes to the likelihood of identifying causal linkages between P/RH services and social and economic variables
Sub-Project 3: P/RH impact on investment and risk attitudes Aim: to better understand the behavioural incentives leading from improved RH status to socio-economic growth at the individual, household and community level. Addresses the impact of differential P/RH service use and RH status on: (a)willingness to invest in people s own and their children s future, and (b)changes in risk attitudes and time horizon, focussing on differences between households with/without access to P/RH services and between male/female responses in behavioural attitudes regarding long-term investments.
Sub-Project 4: Simulation model and policy/programme analyses A: Simulation model: Aim: To assess differential and combined effects of various P/RH investments at micro, meso and macro level, focussing on interactions between poverty reduction programmes and investments in P/RH. B: Policy/programme analyses: Aim: To investigate the degree & ways in which social & economic development implications of P/RH investments are taken into account in general development policies / programmes.
Sub-project 5: RH Service Channels Aim is to investage: 1.Direct and indirect (transaction) user costs of various P/RH service channels (i.e. public, private or voluntary/ NGO) and 2.The effectiveness of these services for improving household wealth / investments. Possible synergies between service providers are captured through interaction effects.
Database sub-project 1 Database Developing World (DDW) DDW contains detailed information on knowledge, attitudes and use of P/RH services at household level, indicators of health status of household members, and socio-economic indicators like educational attainment, occupation and wealth (DHS data). District-level information on P/RH services and wealth is constructed by aggregation from the household surveys to the district level or from external sources.
Database sub-project 2 Panel data of 760 households that participated in the four wave ( ) WB-LSMS Health & Development panel survey in Kagera region, Tanzania (KHDS). The first longitudinal socio-economic survey was followed in 2004 by a fifth round of data collection. A 2010 follow-up is currently being planned, and can possibly be used as well. This survey will be used to assess linkages between P/RH and the likelihood over time of individual/household investments.
Database project 3 New qualitative in depth research: field survey using experimental gaming research methods. Possibility of using the former participants in the WB-LSMS surveys in Kagera region, Tanzania, is being investigated. Focus on: intersection of socio-economic characteristics and gender, sexuality and reproductive health attitudes and practices.
